iFi Audio GO Link 2 Max
Overview
Connecting headphones to a recent smartphone can sometimes be a headache, between vanished jacks and limited power. iFi takes the GO link Max formula, its USB-C dongle with dual conversion and balanced output, and refines it: reduced distortion, a lighter chassis, and app control join its 241 mW of amplification. All of it in 11.5 grams of aluminum, to slip onto the end of a phone, tablet, or computer.
Two ESS chips and a balanced design
The GO link 2 Max features two ESS Sabre converters, one per channel. This layout physically separates the left and right channels, which limits crosstalk and preserves stereo separation. The structure remains fully balanced from conversion to amplification, a principle usually found on much bulkier devices.
A low-jitter GMT clock, driven by a dedicated quartz oscillator, governs the conversion. Jitter, those tiny timing variations in the digital signal, degrades the music’s temporal precision when not properly controlled. iFi adds its in-house processing, Quad DAC+ and a jitter reduction system in the time domain, to stabilize this timing.
Two headphone outputs for every connection
The GO link 2 Max keeps the two outputs that make the Max version appealing. The 4.4 mm balanced output delivers up to 241 mW into 32 ohms and 4 volts into 300 ohms, enough to power relatively demanding headphones, where a smartphone alone quickly runs out of steam. The 4.4 mm format is increasingly used by headphones and earphones supplied with a balanced cable.
The 3.5 mm output covers standard connections, with 100 mW into 32 ohms and 2 volts into 300 ohms. It benefits from iFi’s S-Balanced technology, which applies the rules of a balanced circuit to an unbalanced output. Each channel gets its own return conductor all the way to the star ground of its amplification stage. The result is that crosstalk between the two channels is cut in half on a simple jack output, with no special headphones or cable required.
High-resolution formats and performance figures
On the decoding side, the GO link 2 Max handles PCM up to 384 kHz and native DSD256, without intermediate re-encoding. Files from high-resolution services as well as personal libraries therefore play without forced resampling.
The stated measurements remain solid for such a compact format. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 130 dBA on the balanced output and 125 dBA on the 3.5 mm output. THD+N drops to 0.0007% in balanced mode and 0.001% on the S-Balanced output, while frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 80 kHz. Output impedance remains very low, below 0.7 ohm in balanced mode and 0.35 ohm on the 3.5 mm output. This last point matters just as much as the raw figures: it prevents frequency response from becoming distorted with sensitive in-ear monitors, whose impedance varies depending on frequency.
Digital processing you can fine-tune
Several processing functions from the ESS DAC affect the sound rendering. Dynamic Range Enhancement widens the gap between loud and soft passages, with a claimed dynamic gain of up to 6 dB. THD Compensation acts on the second and third harmonics to reduce distortion by more than half compared with the GO link Max, which results in cleaner sound at high levels.
Volume adjustment goes through a hardware stage, without the loss of resolution caused by purely digital volume control. Two digital filters, Hybrid and Linear, change how the signal is processed at the output and can be selected from the iFi app.
The Nexis app and updates
The GO link 2 Max connects to the iFi Nexis app, a compatibility absent from the GO link Max. There you can choose the digital filter, install firmware updates remotely without any file to download or computer required, and set a volume limit, useful for protecting your hearing or your earphones.
One limitation should be stated from the outset: these software settings and updates go through the Android version of the app. On iPhone and iPad, it remains usable directly for playback, but fine control of settings is not accessible, a limitation tied to Apple’s rules rather than the iFi hardware.
Aluminum chassis and twisted cable
The whole unit fits into an aluminum chassis measuring 143 x 15 x 9.4 mm and weighing 11.5 grams, or more than 20% lighter than the GO link Max and in a slightly shorter format. A cable connects the USB-C plug to the body that carries the two headphone outputs. It uses silver-plated copper, with conductors individually insulated in a polymer and twisted in pairs, a layout that reduces the inductance and capacitance of the connection and limits interference pickup. Its thinness still requires a minimum of care when plugging and unplugging.
Power comes directly from the host device through the USB-C port, which also carries the audio signal. Power consumption ranges from 0.6 watt at idle to 3.2 watts at peak, which eats slightly into a smartphone’s battery during long listening sessions. This dependence remains the trade-off of a format without an internal battery or Bluetooth, which favors the simplicity of a wired connection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the GO link 2 Max work with an iPhone?
Yes. Recent iPhone and iPad models equipped with a USB-C port connect directly. Older Lightning models require a Lightning-to-USB-C adapter. Audio playback works in both cases, but on iOS, filter selection, updates, and the volume limit via the Nexis app are not accessible, unlike on Android.
Which headphones can it power properly?
Its usage range covers in-ear monitors as well as most over-ear headphones with moderate impedance. The 241 mW of the 4.4 mm output offers comfortable headroom for fairly demanding models. The most demanding planar headphones or studio models with very high impedance will, however, benefit from a dedicated desktop amplifier, which provides greater reserve.
Should it be confused with the GO link 2?
No, they are two distinct products. The GO link 2 is the entry-level model in the range, with a single converter, one 3.5 mm output, and no balanced jack. The GO link 2 Max adds the second ESS chip, the balanced design, the 4.4 mm output, and significantly higher power. Both share high-resolution support and compatibility with the Nexis app on Android.
Is it suitable for gaming or calls?
The GO link 2 Max handles audio output only and does not include a microphone. For gaming and video, it reproduces sound without difficulty and benefits from its low latency over a wired connection. For calls, the microphone remains that of the source device, the dongle handling only playback to the headphones.
