Overview

Treating the acoustics of a large room without drying it out remains a balancing act. The dual role of this panel, which absorbs part of the sound energy while redistributing the rest, addresses that problem: it reduces reverberation where a conventional absorber would deaden the room. Its wave-shaped wooden face, perforated with varying widths, also gives it a real presence on a wall.

Absorbing and diffusing at the same time

The Sonora K 24 is a hybrid panel. Its high-density PET core captures part of the acoustic energy, while its front face disperses the rest rather than sending it back as direct reflections. This combination aims for a useful compromise in large spaces: reverberation time is shortened without turning the room into a dead space. An office area or restaurant treated only with absorbers often sounds dull. Here, the diffusive component spreads the sound field more evenly, which helps preserve a certain acoustic liveliness while reducing background noise.

This is the logic behind the hybrid panels in the Sonora K series: acting on reverberation and on sound distribution within the same surface, which simplifies the treatment of large rooms where multiplying purely absorbent panels would end up killing the acoustics.

Wood sculpted into waves

The front face follows a fluid, wave-shaped pattern, with perforations that change in width from one point to another. This interplay of solid and empty spaces creates visual movement and gives the surface depth: the panel does not read as a simple perforated board, but as a relief that catches light differently depending on the viewing angle. Placed side by side, several panels extend this movement across the wall.

This variation in width is not merely aesthetic. The size and spacing of the perforations influence the way the waves penetrate toward the acoustic core, which directly links the design of the face to its sound behavior.

Absorption focused on the midrange

The absorption range extends from 500 to 2500 Hz, that is, the range where most of the human voice lies. This is consistent with the intended uses: making speech more intelligible and calming echoes in rooms where people talk and move around. The measured NRC coefficient is 0.5, which places the panel in acoustic class D. In practical terms, it absorbs about half of the energy that hits it within its useful range: real and audible treatment, but still moderate, to be chosen accordingly depending on the volume to be corrected.

One installation point deserves attention: this coefficient was measured with the panel mounted on a 30 mm PET layer. The layer of material placed behind it is part of the system and contributes to the result. Mounted directly against a rigid wall without that gap, the behavior differs. The Sonora K 24 does not target low frequencies; for a room’s bass modes, dedicated bass traps must be added.

Controlled wood and recycled PET foam

Two finishes share the same internal structure. The natural wood version combines a real wood veneer with black HMDF and the high-density PET acoustic core; the lacquered HMDF version uses the same composition with a lacquered face instead of the veneer. The choice is mainly a matter of the desired appearance, with the acoustic element remaining identical.

From an environmental standpoint, the wood is selected from controlled and sustainable sources, with a stated positive carbon balance, and the PET absorber is recycled, classified as a category 1 product according to the OEKO-TEX 100 standard. The available fire rating is FG, furniture grade. This is a point to check in advance for public venues, where regulations sometimes require a higher fire reaction rating than the one intended for furniture.

Large rooms and speech-focused spaces

The format is that of a tall vertical panel: 605 mm wide by 2400 mm high, and only 19 mm thick, which makes it unobtrusive in depth once installed. This height makes it suitable for the walls of generously sized rooms, where its 2.4 meters cover a surface without multiplying joints.

The contexts in which it makes the most sense are open-plan offices, conference and meeting rooms, auditoriums, and restaurants: spaces where excessive reverberation blurs speech and where flutter echo between two bare walls tires occupants. Dedicated mounting systems, a technical data sheet, and an installation guide come with the panel to frame the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 30 mm PET layer absolutely necessary behind the panel?

The stated absorption coefficient was obtained with this configuration, with the panel mounted on a 30 mm PET layer. This layer is part of the tested system and contributes to the acoustic result. Direct installation against a solid wall remains possible, but the actual performance will differ from the reference value. To achieve the measured performance, it is best to follow this installation method.

Does the Sonora K 24 treat a room's low frequencies?

No. Its effective range goes from 500 to 2500 Hz, that is, the midrange, where the voice is concentrated. The low-frequency resonances of a room, which appear below this range, require specific absorbers such as bass traps. The panel is used in combination with this type of treatment rather than replacing it.

What is the acoustic difference between the natural wood finish and the lacquered HMDF finish?

None acoustically. Both versions share the same black HMDF and the same high-density PET core. Only the finish changes: real wood veneer on one side, lacquered surface on the other. The choice depends on the desired visual look.

What does an acoustic class D with an NRC of 0.5 actually mean?

The acoustic class ranges from A, the most absorbent, to E. A class D panel with an NRC of 0.5 absorbs about half of the sound energy that reaches it within its working range. This is a real but partial treatment: to correct a large room, the total surface area of installed panels is considered, based on the room volume and the initial reverberation time.

How many panels are needed to treat a room?

It depends on the volume of the room, the nature of the existing surfaces, and the target reverberation time. There is no single figure. An acoustic study, even a basic one, makes it possible to determine the necessary absorbing surface area before distributing the panels on the relevant walls.

Does the wave pattern continue when multiple panels are aligned?

Yes. The perforations of varying widths create a continuous movement, designed to flow from one panel to the next. In series, the relief runs across the wall and forms a dynamic surface rather than a static repetition of identical panels.

Is FG rating suitable for a restaurant or a venue open to the public?

The available classification is FG, furniture grade. Depending on the country and the type of establishment, a venue open to the public may be subject to stricter fire reaction requirements than those applicable to furniture. It is advisable to verify these obligations with the project manager or an inspection body before selecting this finish for such a space.
