Furutech FP-SWS (G), the gold-plated copper wall outlet

Between the electrical panel and your electronics, one link almost always remains original: the wall outlet. Furutech treats it as a fully fledged audio component. The FP-SWS (G) replaces the usual brass with gold-plated pure copper, in a single Schuko format, to be connected to a dedicated mains line. Its benefit lies in the quality of the electrical contact, from the incoming wire to the plug pins.

Pure copper where brass is usually found

Most wall outlets use brass or phosphor bronze for their contacts. The reason is mechanical: these alloys are rigid and hold the plug firmly. Pure copper conducts better, but it is soft, which complicates its use in an outlet subjected to repeated insertions. Furutech retains pure copper and compensates for its flexibility with a reinforcing plate and a pressure plate that maintain firm contact. The 0.5 mm thick conductor receives gold plating and the in-house Alpha treatment.

The conductor’s Alpha treatment

The α (Alpha) designation refers to a two-stage treatment applied to metal parts. First comes deep cryogenic processing, between -196 and -250 °C using liquid nitrogen or helium, which relieves internal stresses in the metal and stabilizes its structure. This is followed by ring demagnetization, under license from patent holder Sekiguchi Machine Sale, which removes residual magnetism left by manufacturing and handling. The goal is copper free from mechanical stress and stray magnetism, two factors that affect conductivity and background noise.

Gold plating and contact surface

The (G) suffix indicates 24-carat gold plating on Alpha copper. Gold does not oxidize, keeping contact resistance low and stable over time, including in an outlet that remains on the wall for years. Furutech adds a patent-pending pressure plate that increases the surface in contact with the Alpha conductor. The incoming wire tightened by the screw and the plug pins therefore rest on a wider area, and the connection offers less resistance to the flow of current.

A glass fiber-reinforced nylon body

The body is molded from glass fiber-reinforced nylon, a rigid, temperature-stable material that limits resonances. The cover is made of polycarbonate, and the faceplate of ABS. At the rear, a 1 mm zinc and steel retaining plate stiffens the mounting in the wall box. The assembly measures 95 mm on each side, with a depth of 48 mm, and weighs approximately 320 grams—a density that stands apart from an ordinary outlet. The metal parts are selected for their non-magnetic properties, in keeping with the same logic as the Alpha treatment.

Accepted wiring and wall installation

The FP-SWS (G) is a two-pole-and-earth Schuko outlet rated at 16 A and 250 V. The clamping screw accepts wire up to 2.8 mm in diameter, or 5.5 mm² / 10 AWG, enough to accommodate a generous conductor size from the electrical panel. It makes the most sense on a dedicated line, run directly from the panel and protected by its own circuit breaker. As with any work on mains electricity, installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician. The Schuko format does not always fit flush in a standard French wall box: it is best to check the available depth and width, as the conductors connect at the top and bottom of the outlet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a French appliance plug be connected to it?

Yes. Hybrid European CEE 7/7 plugs, fitted to almost all devices sold in France, fit into a Schuko socket and are grounded via the socket’s side clips. Grounding is therefore ensured.

Why choose gold plating over another metal?

Gold resists oxidation and maintains low, consistent contact resistance over time. A contact that does not tarnish retains the same connection quality over the years, without the thin oxide layer that forms on bare metals. Furutech also offers its sockets in rhodium, a harder plating; the gold version is preferred here for contact stability and corrosion resistance.

What cable cross-section is required?

The clamping screw accepts up to 5.5 mm² (10 AWG), or a wire 2.8 mm in diameter. A large-gauge solid conductor holds the tightening torque better than stranded wire: strip it to the desired length and tighten it fully to limit resistance at the contact point.

Do I need a dedicated line to take advantage of it?

It’s not mandatory, but this is where the benefit is most noticeable. A dedicated line run directly from the electrical panel, with its own circuit breaker, avoids sharing the circuit with other devices and the interference they feed back into it. The outlet is only one link in the chain: it works in conjunction with the quality of the upstream wiring.

Does the plug require a break-in period?

The contacts and plating stabilize after a few hours of operation, allowing the tightening and contact surfaces to settle into place. This is mechanical settling rather than an adjustment: simply let the installation run.

Does it fit into a modular decorative frame?

No. It comes with its own ABS faceplate and attaches to the enclosure screws. It is not designed to fit into the modular plates of common French ranges. On a concrete or stone wall, you may need to enlarge the recess, as the base is deeper than a standard outlet.
