Overview

Nearly two metres wide, weighing around fifty kilos, and with a picture that needs to remain clear in broad daylight: with a visible diagonal of 217 cm, an LCD television depends above all on its backlighting. This 86-inch model from the W95C series, at the top of Panasonic’s Mini LED range for 2026, combines quantum dots, thousands of zone-controlled LEDs and an anti-reflective coating. Google TV and a 144 Hz panel complete the package.

Thousands of LEDs to control the light

An LCD screen does not produce its own light: LEDs positioned behind the panel illuminate it. On this television, these are Mini LEDs spread across the entire rear surface (direct backlighting, known as DLED). The Dynamic Local Dimming Ultra system groups them into more than 1,000 zones, which it lights up or dims independently. A zone displaying a night sky can switch off almost entirely while its neighbour illuminates a window or the credits. Blacks gain depth and highlights reach around 1,500 cd/m² at peak brightness, a level that gives HDR content greater impact.

Local dimming remains a compromise inherent to LCD technology. Each zone still covers a group of pixels, and a very bright object against a black background can leave a slight halo around it, particularly when viewed at an angle. The more zones there are, the tighter this halo becomes. On an 86-inch screen, a thousand zones provides a reasonable level of segmentation, below what self-emissive screens offer on a pixel-by-pixel basis.

The QD prefix refers to the quantum dot layer positioned in front of the LEDs. These nanocrystals convert blue light into highly pure red and green, bringing colour coverage to 105% of the DCI-P3 colour space, the reference for cinema masters. An ambient light sensor adjusts the picture to suit the room’s lighting.

Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Filmmaker mode

HDR compatibility covers Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG. The first two carry dynamic metadata that adjusts brightness scene by scene. Each streaming platform favours one or the other: supporting both avoids losing this information depending on the service used. HLG is used for live broadcasts, sports and coverage.

The AI 4K Colour Engine Ultra processor analyses the picture using artificial intelligence to adjust colours, contrast and sharpness. Its work matters most with a high-definition digital terrestrial channel or a 1080p video, which must be stretched across more than eight million pixels. On such a large surface, the quality of this upscaling is immediately apparent.

For films, Filmmaker mode switches off motion compensation and added processing. It preserves the original frame rate, colours and aspect ratio. The television also offers Cinema, Standard, Sport, Vivid, Game, Energy Saving and User modes.

Anti-reflective treatment for bright living rooms

An 86-inch panel facing a large window reflects everything around it. The Glare Free Ultra treatment reduces light reflections and the mirror effect. It preserves deep blacks and bright whites, and widens viewing angles, keeping the picture clear from the far end of the sofa. Combined with the backlight’s high brightness, it makes this television usable in a sunny living room, where a glossy screen would require the curtains to be drawn.

Four speakers and a subwoofer inside the chassis

The Theater Surround 360 system delivers 80 W across 4.1 channels: one 15 W front speaker, two side speakers rated at 15 W each and an integrated 20 W subwoofer. This configuration gives the bass more body and the soundstage greater width than the small drivers usually found in slim televisions. Dolby Atmos decoding is included, but without an upward-firing speaker: the height effect remains virtual, calculated through signal processing.

To go further, one of the HDMI ports supports eARC and sends sound to a soundbar or home cinema amplifier. The Bluetooth Audio Link function sends sound to headphones or a wireless speaker. Depending on the device, a slight delay between picture and sound may occur. A wired headphone output and an optical output complete the audio connectivity.

Up to 144 Hz for consoles and PCs

The panel refreshes the picture up to 144 times per second. Current consoles top out at 120 frames per second in 4K, a rate the panel handles with ease; the 144 Hz refresh rate is for a PC connected via HDMI. Variable refresh rate (VRR) synchronises the display with the game’s actual frame rate and eliminates screen tearing, with AMD FreeSync Premium certification. G-Sync Compatible certification is absent, something to be aware of for anyone gaming with an NVIDIA graphics card.

Auto low latency mode (ALLM) switches the television to Game Mode Extreme as soon as a console starts a game. The Game Control Board dashboard brings gaming information and settings together in an overlay. The three HDMI inputs meet the 2.1 standard with HDCP 2.3. With an amplifier or soundbar connected to eARC, two ports remain available for sources, enough to connect two consoles but no more without routing them through the amplifier.

Google TV, aerial, satellite and recording

The Google TV interface brings streaming apps together and offers recommendations based on the subscriptions installed. Built-in microphones let you speak to Google Assistant without touching the remote control, and the television also accepts commands from an Alexa speaker. Chromecast and screen mirroring display a video or photo from a smartphone, while the media player reads files from a USB drive or a DLNA server on the home network. A Bluetooth keyboard or mouse makes input easier. When idle, Art Time mode displays artwork or personal photos rather than a large black rectangle.

For conventional television, the DVB-T/T2, DVB-S2 and DVB-C tuners receive digital terrestrial TV via an aerial, satellite via a dish and cable TV. A CI+ 1.4 slot accepts an operator’s module for pay-TV channels, while HbbTV provides access to broadcasters’ interactive services. A hard drive or USB drive with at least 160 GB enables programme recording and live TV pausing. The television has only one tuner: you cannot watch one channel while recording another.

Installing a screen nearly two metres wide

Without its stand, the television measures 1925 × 1109 × 97 mm and weighs 50.7 kg. The central U-shaped stand, made of black metal, fits on furniture narrower than the screen, provided it is at least 40 cm deep: the complete unit measures 399 mm deep and 1163 mm high. For wall mounting, the VESA 600 × 400 mm mounting pattern accepts standard brackets in this category. However, the weight requires a load-bearing wall or suitable wall plugs, and two people for installation.

The box measures 2.05 m long and weighs 62.7 kg: it is best to check clearance through doors, stairways or lifts before delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the W95C and the W97C?

Only the color changes: black on the W95C, silver on the W97C. The panel, backlighting, processor, sound and connectivity are identical, and both series are available in 55, 65, 75 and 86 inches.

What does the W95C offer over the W92C?

The W92C retains the 144 Hz panel and Glare Free Ultra treatment. However, it uses the AI 4K Colour Engine Pro processor, one step below the Ultra version, and a 50 W audio system. It tops out at 75 inches: the 86-inch size is only available in the W95C/W97C series.

How far should you sit from an 86-inch 4K TV?

Approximately 2.5 to 3.5 m. At around 2.5 m, the screen fills a large part of your field of view, much like in a movie theater, without the 4K pixel structure becoming visible. Beyond 3.5 m, a 75-inch screen would offer a fairly similar experience.

Is 144 Hz useful with a PS5 or Xbox Series X?

No higher than 120 Hz, the maximum these consoles can output. They do, however, benefit from VRR, ALLM, and 4K at high frame rates. The 144 Hz refresh rate is for a gaming PC whose graphics card can exceed 120 frames per second.

Can I stream from an iPhone or a Mac?

Not via AirPlay, which the TV does not support. The many Chromecast-compatible apps on iPhone remain usable. For a Mac, an HDMI cable is the simplest solution.

Do I need a set-top box to watch TV?

No. A rooftop antenna is enough for digital terrestrial TV, and a satellite dish for satellite TV, as the tuners are built in. A set-top box is still useful for services specific to an internet provider; it can then be connected via HDMI.

Is Wi-Fi sufficient for 4K streaming?

Dual-band AC Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 5) easily handles the bandwidth needed for 4K HDR if the router is not too far away. In a living room with poor Wi-Fi coverage or many connected devices, the Ethernet port provides a more stable connection.

What accessories are included?

A voice remote control and its two AAA batteries. The wall mount and the disk or USB drive for recording must be purchased separately.
