Overview

At the top of Panasonic’s LCD range, the W95C series combines QD-Mini LED backlighting, a 4K panel capable of reaching 144 Hz and an anti-reflective treatment in this 139 cm format, keeping the picture clear when sunlight enters the living room. Google TV, Dolby Vision, an 80 W 4.1 audio system and three HDMI 2.1 ports round out a television that switches effortlessly from the evening news to console gaming.

Thousands of mini-diodes behind the panel

An LCD television does not produce light itself: the panel filters light from a backlight positioned behind it. On the TN-55W95C, this lighting relies on thousands of miniature diodes placed directly behind the screen (direct backlighting) and grouped into zones that the television controls separately. Dynamic Local Dimming Ultra dims the zones corresponding to dark areas of the picture and boosts those covering highlights, resulting in deeper blacks and stronger contrast between shadows and bright details.

“QD” refers to a layer of quantum dots, nanocrystals that convert the diodes’ blue light into very pure red and green. Panasonic groups this process under the name Wide Colour Spectrum: the colour palette expands and saturated shades become more accurate. As with any locally dimmed LCD, a zone always covers a group of pixels, and a very bright object against a black background may show a slight halo around it, a trade-off inherent to this technology that finer zoning helps reduce.

A picture that adapts to the programme and the room

The AI 4K Colour Engine Ultra processor analyses images and adjusts colour, sharpness and contrast according to the content displayed. An ambient light sensor complements this by raising or lowering brightness according to the room’s lighting, preventing a dull picture in the middle of the afternoon or a dazzling one in the evening.

For high dynamic range (HDR), the TN-55W95C supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+, two formats that transmit scene-by-scene adjustment instructions rather than a single value for the entire film, as well as HLG, which television channels use for HDR broadcasts. Filmmaker Mode takes the opposite approach to automatic processing: it disables motion correction and sharpening to show the film as it was graded, with its original frame rate and colours. Seven picture modes, including Cinema, Sport, Game and Energy Saving, cover everyday uses.

Glare Free Ultra tackles window reflections

The Glare Free Ultra treatment reduces light reflections on the panel’s surface and eliminates the mirror effect produced by glossy screens. A window opposite the television or a lamp switched on in the room interferes far less with picture visibility, and dark scenes retain their blacks instead of reflecting the living room’s decor. In a bright room or one with extensive glazing, this is one of the most noticeable benefits in everyday use.

Up to 144 frames per second for gaming

The three HDMI 2.1 inputs accept high-frame-rate 4K and variable refresh rate (VRR), which aligns the display with the actual output rate of the console or computer up to 144 Hz. This synchronisation eliminates horizontal screen tearing and stuttering when the game briefly slows down. AMD FreeSync Premium certification guarantees this operation with AMD graphics cards, while G-Sync compatibility is not among the television’s certifications.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) switches the TN-55W95C to Game Mode Extreme as soon as a console launches a game, reducing the delay between pressing a controller button and the action on screen, and a gaming dashboard brings together the settings specific to this mode. Three HDMI ports call for a little organisation: with an amplifier or soundbar connected to the eARC port, two inputs remain available for sources, such as a console and a player or set-top box. All support HDMI-CEC control, allowing connected devices to be operated with the television’s remote control.

4.1 sound with an integrated subwoofer

The Theater Surround 360 system distributes 80 W between a 15 W front channel, two side speakers rated at 15 W each and a 20 W subwoofer housed in the chassis. The side speakers extend the soundstage beyond the edges of the screen, and the subwoofer gives explosions and basslines a body that flat-screen televisions often struggle to reproduce. Dolby Atmos decoding adds a vertical dimension to films and series mixed in this format, and seven sound modes (News, Cinema, Music or Sport, among others) adapt the balance to the programme.

For a fuller sound, the HDMI eARC port sends audio, including Dolby Atmos, to a home cinema amplifier or soundbar. An optical output remains available for an older system, while a headphone output and Bluetooth audio connectivity allow private listening.

Google TV, voice commands and conventional television

The Google TV interface brings streaming apps together and offers personalised recommendations drawn from installed services. A built-in microphone accepts Google Assistant voice commands without touching the remote control, and the television can also be controlled from an Alexa device. Chromecast and screen mirroring display content from a smartphone in a single step, and Art Time mode turns the idle screen into a decorative picture frame.

Traditional television retains its full place thanks to the triple tuner: digital terrestrial television (DVB-T/T2), satellite (DVB-S2) and cable (DVB-C), with an electronic programme guide and HbbTV interactive services. Voice guidance reads menus and programme information aloud, a valuable aid for people with visual impairments, and the menus are available in 48 languages.

Installation and everyday power consumption

The central U-shaped stand in black metal allows the TN-55W95C to sit on a unit narrower than the screen itself, with a footprint measuring 261 mm deep. The television measures 1233 mm wide and 87 mm thick and weighs 16.2 kg without its stand. A mini-jack composite video input is still provided for connecting an older player or camcorder.

Power consumption reflects the brightness this type of panel can deliver: 77 kWh per 1000 hours with a standard picture (class F) and 153 kWh in HDR (class G), where the backlight works harder on highlights. In standby, it drops to 0.5 W.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between the TN-55W95C and the TN-55W97C?

Panasonic offers the series in two models that differ in their finish. The panel, image processing, audio system and connectivity remain the same.

Do game consoles benefit from 144 Hz?

Current-generation consoles top out at 120 frames per second, which the TN-55W95C displays without difficulty with VRR. The 144 Hz refresh rate is mainly useful for a gaming PC connected via HDMI, whose graphics card can exceed that limit.

Can I record TV shows?

Yes, on a hard drive or USB flash drive of at least 160 GB connected to one of the two USB ports. The time-shift function pauses a live programme so you can resume it later from where it stopped. Channels received via TV>IP, i.e. broadcast over the home network, cannot be recorded.

Does a Bluetooth headset work properly?

The TN-55W95C sends stereo sound to Bluetooth headphones or a speaker. Depending on the device, a slight delay between sound and picture may occur, which is not a fault. For perfect synchronization, the wired headphone output remains the most reliable solution.

Can I connect a keyboard or mouse?

Yes, the TV’s Bluetooth recognizes wireless keyboards and mice. Typing a search or password in an app becomes much faster than with the remote control.

Can the TV play files stored on a computer or server?

Yes, it connects to the home network as a client and plays videos, photos, and music shared by a DLNA-compatible server, provided the file formats are supported. The media player also plays HDR videos encoded in H.264 or H.265.

Can the TV be wall-mounted?

Yes, it supports VESA 300 × 200 mm wall mounts, sold separately. You will need a mount capable of supporting at least 16.2 kg and clearance at the rear for cables plugged into the connectors.

What's in the box?

The TV comes with its central stand and a voice remote control with two AAA batteries. The box measures 1335 × 835 × 151 mm with a total weight of 21.7 kg, to take into account for transport and setup.
