Overview
A 21 cm driver, a wooden cabinet with retro lines and two large front ports: the BR05 is the largest of the bookshelf speakers in the Borea range. It retains the tweeter, cellulose cone and anti-vibration treatment of the other models in the series, with deeper bass and sound coverage for rooms up to 45 m². Its included angled base allows it to be placed directly on the floor.
A new 21 cm natural cellulose driver for midrange and bass
The 100% natural cellulose pulp cone, with no surface treatment, is the hallmark of the Borea range. On the other models, it is fitted to 13 or 16 cm drivers. On the BR10 floorstanding speaker, the two 21 cm drivers are made of fiberglass and handle only the bass. The BR05 features a new 21 cm cellulose driver that single-handedly covers the entire spectrum below the tweeter, from vocals down to the lowest notes.
This choice has two practical consequences. A larger cone moves more air, resulting in a frequency response that extends down to 42 Hz, a rare figure for a speaker of this type. And since there is no crossover between separate midrange and bass drivers, the transition between lower vocals and upper bass takes place within a single cone. Cellulose preserves the range’s midrange character: full-bodied vocals and a rich reproduction of instrumental timbres. The trade-off is its size, at 49 cm high, 34.5 cm deep and 14.6 kg per speaker.
An EFS tweeter with a waveguide for the treble
Treble is handled by the EFS (Efficient Flow System) tweeter shared across the range: a 25 mm fabric dome, paired with a central bullet-shaped phase plug that distributes energy more evenly. The dome sits in a shallow horn that guides dispersion and limits reflections from the front baffle. The soundstage therefore remains coherent even away from the ideal listening position, which matters in a living room where you also listen from the end of the sofa.
The compact, powerful neodymium motor is paired with a cooling system that improves power handling. The response extends up to 22 kHz.
A reinforced cabinet and the DVAS system to counter vibrations
The larger the bass driver, the more it makes the cabinet housing it vibrate, and these vibrations ultimately color the sound. The BR05 addresses this problem in two ways. Its cabinet is reinforced to handle the energy of the 21 cm driver. It also features Triangle’s DVAS (Driver Vibration Absorption System): perforated internal MDF panels combined with EVA foam, which stiffen the driver and cabinet assembly and absorb vibrations caused by the cone’s movement.
Bass extension is provided by two bass-reflex ports positioned at the bottom of the front baffle. These ducts use the air inside the cabinet to reinforce low frequencies. Since they vent forward rather than toward the wall, the speaker can be placed closer to a wall than a rear-ported model. A few centimeters of clearance remain useful, as the rear wall naturally reinforces the bass.
Retro styling in five finishes
The BR05 follows the aesthetic cues of the Borea range, with a more vintage look due to its proportions and two clearly visible ports. The wooden cabinet is paired with a color-coordinated front panel, in five finishes: black, chestnut, white, light oak and green. The magnetic grilles can be removed in one motion to reveal the drivers.
On the floor with its base or on S03 stands
Two setup options are provided. The first involves placing the speaker directly on the floor on the included base, which brings the height to 55 cm and the overall depth to 40.8 cm. The second uses the dedicated S03 stands. In both cases, the speaker tilts backward: the drivers are aimed at the seated listener’s ears rather than above or below them. The direct sound therefore arrives more clearly, and stereo imaging becomes more precise. The recommended room size ranges from 15 to 45 m², from an average-sized living room to a large open-plan space.
Which amplifier to pair with the Borea BR05
Sensitivity indicates the sound level produced with one watt of amplification, measured at one meter. At 90 dB/W/m, the BR05 ranks toward the top of its category: it plays loudly without requiring a very powerful amplifier. Its impedance ranges from 4.7 to 8 Ω and never drops below 4.7 Ω. This is a load that almost all integrated amplifiers, network amplifiers and home theater receivers handle without difficulty. Its 120 W RMS power handling also leaves headroom for a more powerful amplifier.
In a home theater setup, the BR05 serves as the front left and right speakers. Paired with the BRC1 or BRC2 center speakers and the BRS1 or BRA1 surround speakers, which share the same EFS tweeter, it forms a tonally consistent system in which voices retain the same character as they move from one speaker to another.

Frequently asked questions
Should you add a subwoofer to the Borea BR05?
For music listening, few tracks go below the 42 Hz that the BR05 reproduces, and many listeners will do without. For home theater, movie effects extend down to around 20 hertz. A subwoofer then handles this range and relieves the front speakers, which play more comfortably at high volume.
Can the BR05 be placed on a piece of furniture?
It is designed to stand on the floor, on its base, or on S03 stands. The base tilts the speaker for listening from a seated position: placed on furniture, it would aim the tweeter above ear level. At 30 cm wide, nearly 35 cm deep and weighing 14.6 kg, the BR05 requires a stable footing in any case.
What is the difference between the supplied base and the S03 stands?
Both tilt the speaker towards the listener. The base is the simplest solution: it comes with the speaker and sits directly on the floor. The S03 stands raise the cabinet higher, making them suitable for taller sofas and lifting the speaker away from the floor, whose proximity reinforces the bass.
What is the difference between the BR05 and the BR03 and BR04?
The BR03 uses a 16 cm driver and is designed for rooms up to 25 m². The BR04 is a larger, taller version with deeper bass extension. The BR05 steps up in size with its 21 cm driver, a width of 30 cm compared to 22 cm for the BR04, and suitability for rooms up to 45 m². It is also the only one of the three to feature this retro look and come with a plinth.
Should speakers be angled toward the listening position?
The tilt of the base already takes care of the vertical alignment. Horizontally, a slight toe-in, which involves turning the speakers a few degrees towards the listener, tightens the stereo image and stabilises the centre. A good starting point is to space the two speakers roughly as far apart as they are from the listener, then adjust by ear.
Should you listen with or without the grilles?
Both are possible. The grilles protect the cones from impacts, children and animals, and their magnetic attachment allows them to be removed in one motion for critical listening. Without the grille, the treble gains a little clarity and the speaker’s retro front panel remains visible.
What speaker cable gauge should I choose?
For typical lengths of up to around ten meters, a 2.5 mm² cable is more than sufficient. Beyond that, a 4 mm² cross-section limits losses. The key is to use two cables of the same length for both speakers and maintain the correct polarity: red to red, black to black.
