HumminGuru Stylus Cleaner
HumminGuru Stylus Cleaner Stylus Brush
With each record side, the stylus picks up some of the dust that static electricity has trapped in the groove. It builds up behind the tip, eventually becoming audible as veiled treble or spitting sibilance, and accelerates stylus wear. This small, long-handled brush removes this buildup dry, in a few seconds, before a listening session or between sides, without taking anything apart.
A long handle to reach the tip
The handle measures 10 cm long, 13 mm wide and 6 mm thick. This length keeps fingers away from the tonearm and platter, while its slim profile lets it fit beneath the cartridge without hitting the headshell. The head provides a brushing surface 9 mm in diameter, much wider than the small brushes supplied with bottles of cleaning fluid. On a stylus measuring less than a millimetre, this width covers the tip and cantilever (the thin rod that holds the stylus) in a single pass, without requiring millimetre-perfect aim. The HumminGuru logo printed on the handle serves as a guide: holding it facing upwards positions the brush the right way round.
The right motion: from back to front
HumminGuru describes a single motion suitable for all cartridges. The brush is held at a slight angle and slides gently from the back of the tip towards the front, along the axis of the cantilever, from its attachment point towards the stylus. Brushing from side to side, moving from front to back and applying any downward pressure must be avoided. The cantilever rests on an elastomer suspension just a few millimetres in size: a sideways push or pressure is enough to displace or bend it, and a cartridge with a bent cantilever can rarely be repaired. The safest method is to stop the platter, raise the tonearm with the cueing lever, then make two or three passes with the brush before lowering the stylus back onto the record.
Dry maintenance as part of the listening routine
The brush is used on its own, without liquid, making it a habit rather than a cleaning operation. A pass before each session is enough to prevent dust from gathering into a small ball behind the tip. Older deposits, hardened by the heat of friction in the groove, sometimes require a dedicated stylus cleaning fluid applied in a very small quantity; the brush then removes what remains once the deposit has softened. It complements record cleaning without replacing it: a clean record sends less dust onto the tip, and a clean tip does not deposit it back into the grooves.

Frequently asked questions
Is the brush suitable for moving coil (MC) cartridges?
Yes, the motion remains the same regardless of the cartridge technology, moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC). MC cartridges often have a short cantilever and a low body, close to the record: the long handle helps maintain a consistent angle without touching the cartridge body.
Can you brush the stylus while the record is spinning?
No. The platter must be stopped and the tonearm raised. Brushing a stylus resting on a spinning record applies lateral force to the cantilever, exactly what the instruction manual prohibits.
How can you tell if the stylus needs cleaning?
A small grey ball visible behind the stylus tip, under a lamp or with a magnifying glass, is the clearest sign. When listening, a dirty stylus reveals itself through less crisp treble, distorted sibilants, and, in advanced cases, skipping grooves. It is better not to wait for these symptoms and to brush it regularly.
Should the brush be moistened?
No, it is used dry. If a stylus cleaning fluid becomes necessary, apply a tiny amount directly to the tip, and never enough to run down the cantilever towards the cartridge body, where it could reach the suspension.
How do I care for the brush itself?
Simply tap it gently or blow on the bristles after use to remove any trapped dust, then store it somewhere protected, in a drawer or box. A brush left out in the open collects dust and deposits it back onto the stylus tip the next time it is used.
Does regular cleaning eliminate the need to replace the stylus?
No. The brush slows wear by preventing dust from acting as an abrasive, but the diamond stylus still wears down through contact with the vinyl. Its lifespan depends on the shape of the tip and is stated in the cartridge manufacturer’s documentation; once that lifespan is reached, the stylus (or cartridge) must be replaced, regardless of how clean the tip is.
