Pinell of Norway Compact +
Overview
A radio that moves from the kitchen to the balcony and then into a bag, without worrying about rain or finding a free socket: Norwegian brand Pinell brings DAB+ digital radio, FM and Bluetooth together in this cube measuring around 12 cm on each side. The battery lasts up to 14 hours, the casing resists dust and water, and four buttons provide direct access to favourite stations.
A 640-gram cube that fears neither water nor dust
The Compact+ measures 120 mm wide, 121 mm high and 90 mm deep, and weighs 640 grams. It fits in one hand and finds a home on a windowsill, a bathroom shelf or a garden table. The front is covered in fabric, the rest of the casing is black (Night Black finish), and the telescopic antenna extends at the back when FM reception requires it.
The casing is IP67-certified, the highest level of protection found on a portable radio. The first digit means that no dust can get inside at all, while the second means that the device can withstand temporary immersion in water. A shower on the patio, splashes near the sink or a spell in the shower therefore pose no problem, and beach sand stays outside.
DAB+ digital radio and FM together in one radio
DAB+ is terrestrial digital radio. It is received through an antenna, like FM, but without the hiss or crackle that comes with weak FM reception. It also provides access to stations unavailable on the local FM band and displays the station name and programme information on the screen. FM remains available across the full band, from 87.5 to 108 MHz, with phase-locked loop (PLL) tuning: the selected frequency stays stable and does not drift as you listen.
The radio stores 40 stations across DAB+ and FM. The four most frequently listened to can be assigned to the preset buttons on the front and recalled with a single press. The others are accessible through the menu.
A 5 W speaker and Bluetooth for music from your phone
Sound comes from a full-range speaker, meaning a single driver that reproduces bass, midrange and treble on its own, powered by a 5 W RMS amplifier. This power output is suited to a medium-sized room or outdoor listening from a few metres away. A built-in equaliser adjusts the tonal balance: a little more bass for music, greater voice clarity for talk programmes and news bulletins.
Bluetooth 5.3 turns the Compact+ into a wireless speaker for a smartphone or tablet. Podcasts, streaming playlists or internet radio stations played from an app come through the same speaker, and the radio takes over again as soon as you switch sources.
Colour screen, alarm clock and French-language menu
The TFT colour screen, with a diagonal of 3.73 cm, displays the station, time and settings. Its backlight is adjustable, which matters when the radio sits on a bedside table and you do not want a bright light in the bedroom. The menu is available in nine languages, including French.
The built-in clock provides the basis for a complete alarm clock: an alarm, a snooze function to gain a few extra minutes, and a sleep timer that switches the radio off after a selected period, so you can fall asleep to a programme without leaving it running all night.
Up to 14 hours of listening away from any socket
The built-in battery lasts up to 14 hours, enough to cover a whole day in the garden or several mornings of radio in the kitchen. It recharges through the USB-C port in around four hours, using the supplied cable and any USB charger or computer port. The box contains the radio, this cable and a multilingual quick start guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Pinell Compact+ receive Internet radio?
No. It receives DAB+ and FM via its antenna, without a Wi-Fi connection. To listen to internet radio, simply play it on a smartphone and stream it to the Compact+ via Bluetooth.
What's the difference compared to the Pinell Compact?
The Compact+ is slightly larger than the Compact and offers longer battery life: up to 14 hours compared to 8 hours for the Compact. It also has more preset buttons on the front panel and an IP67-rated enclosure.
Can DAB+ digital radio be received everywhere in France?
DAB+ coverage expands every year and now reaches the majority of the population, but the range of stations varies from region to region. Arcom publishes a coverage map showing which multiplexes can be received at each address. Where DAB+ is not yet available, FM takes over on the same radio.
Do I need to rescan for stations when moving to a different region?
Yes, for DAB+. Programmes are grouped into multiplexes, some national and others local. On holiday or when travelling, a new automatic scan adds the local stations available at your location.
Is the sound in stereo?
No, the Compact+ has a single speaker, so playback is in mono. Both channels of a stereo broadcast or a track streamed via Bluetooth are mixed through this speaker, without losing any instrumental parts.
Can you connect a source to it with a cable?
The only port on the Compact+ is USB-C, which is used for charging. To listen to a source other than radio, you need to use Bluetooth.
What does the IP67 rating mean in practice?
The IP67 rating guarantees complete protection against dust and resistance to temporary immersion in water, up to one metre deep for 30 minutes under the standard. The radio can withstand rain, splashes of water and being dropped in a puddle. It is not designed to stay underwater, and it is best to dry it before connecting the charging cable.
