The REFLEX SUB 2 m is a subwoofer interconnect cable manufactured by Real Cable for subwoofer enclosures. It features TDC (Time Difference Control) technology and uses high-quality materials to transmit low frequencies. Designed for home theater systems, it connects the amplifier to the active subwoofer. This cable is equipped with 99.999% pure OFC copper conductors and benefits from quadruple shielding.
At the heart of the REFLEX SUB are oxygen-free OFC (Oxygen Free Copper) conductors with an exceptional purity of 99.999%. This copper quality, achieved through an advanced deoxygenation process, virtually eliminates all impurities that could affect signal transmission. The cable’s generous cross-section allows for lossless transmission of the high-power signals typical of subwoofers.
Quadruple shielding is one of this cable’s major strengths. It consists of a nylon anti-vibration braid that absorbs mechanical vibrations, a high-density ground braid for electromagnetic protection, an aluminum foil against radio frequency interference, and a double FPE (foamed polyethylene) insulator with low capacitive effect. This multilayer architecture ensures total isolation of the transmitted signal, even in electrically noisy environments.
The FPE insulation deserves special mention as it offers superior dielectric properties compared to standard PVC. Its low capacitive effect preserves the speed of signal transmission and minimizes losses, which is especially important in low frequencies where even slight degradation results in a loss of dynamics and precision.
Time Difference Control technology is Real Cable’s signature innovation. Unlike conventional cables where all frequencies travel through the same conductors, TDC uses strands of two different gauges within the same cable. The thicker strands preferentially carry low frequencies, while the thinner strands transmit higher frequencies.
This selective separation addresses a fundamental physical issue: different frequencies do not propagate at the same speed in a homogeneous conductor. Without correction, this phenomenon creates a phase shift between lows and highs, degrading the temporal coherence of the signal. TDC synchronizes propagation times, restoring the original temporal integrity of the audio signal.
For subwoofer applications, this technology provides particularly audible benefits. The bass gains in depth and authority, with better articulation in the sub-bass range. Dynamics are noticeably improved, allowing the subwoofer to faithfully reproduce the fast transients and level variations characteristic of modern cinema soundtracks.
The RCA TwistLock connectors are another technical highlight. Machined from solid metal blocks, they feature a twist-lock system that ensures a perfectly stable and secure connection. This exclusive mechanism eliminates the risk of accidental disconnection while maintaining constant contact pressure.
Rhodium plating on the contacts is a particularly wise technical choice. A member of the platinum group, rhodium is harder than gold and offers exceptional corrosion resistance. Its crystalline structure also provides better conductivity than standard gold, with a more balanced sound signature and improved high-frequency extension.
Each connector is hand-assembled and soldered using Real Cable’s artisanal methods. This manufacturing approach guarantees the quality and consistency of the connections, while allowing precise control over each assembly step. Hand soldering offers greater long-term reliability than automated industrial processes.
The REFLEX SUB’s multilayer shielding system incorporates strategically placed ferrites to filter out high-frequency noise. These passive components absorb the energy of unwanted signals without affecting the useful audio band, thus preserving the purity of the transmitted signal.
The nylon anti-vibration braid plays an important mechanical role by decoupling the cable from surrounding vibrations. In a home theater system, powerful bass generates vibrations that can travel through the cable structure and create unwanted micro-modulations. This mechanical protection maintains signal integrity even at high levels.
The high-density ground shielding braid creates an effective Faraday cage against external electromagnetic fields. This protection is crucial in modern setups where power amplifiers, digital processors, and other sources of electromagnetic interference coexist.
What sonic difference can I expect compared to a standard subwoofer cable?
The REFLEX SUB delivers a noticeable improvement in bass precision and dynamics. The lows gain in definition and impact, with better separation of the different components of the bass spectrum. Sub-bass extension is significantly improved, offering more depth and realism to cinematic effects. TDC technology eliminates the slight phase shifts that can make bass sound “sluggish” with conventional cables.
Is the TwistLock system compatible with all equipment?
Yes, the TwistLock connectors fit perfectly with standard female RCA sockets. The locking mechanism works with a simple quarter-turn after insertion, requiring no modification to existing equipment. This system provides superior connection security while remaining compatible with all amplifiers and subwoofers on the market equipped with RCA inputs.
Why does Real Cable use rhodium instead of gold for the contacts?
Rhodium offers several technical advantages over gold: greater hardness for better wear resistance, exceptional corrosion resistance, and balanced conductivity across the entire audio spectrum. Its sound signature is characterized by more neutrality and greater high-frequency extension compared to gold, which can sometimes impart a warmer but less precise coloration.
Does TDC technology provide real benefits for a subwoofer cable?
Absolutely. While the subwoofer mainly reproduces low frequencies, it actually receives a full-range signal that is then filtered. TDC technology improves the temporal coherence of this signal before filtering, resulting in better rhythmic precision and increased dynamics. The effect is especially noticeable on fast transients and passages where the subwoofer must reproduce significant level variations.
Does the cable require any special break-in?
Like all high-end cables, the REFLEX SUB gradually reveals its qualities with use. The first few hours of listening may seem slightly closed as the materials stabilize. After about fifty hours of use, performance stabilizes and the cable fully expresses its potential. No special break-in is required; normal use is sufficient.
Is the REFLEX SUB sensitive to electromagnetic interference?
No, its quadruple shielding provides excellent immunity to electromagnetic noise. The combination of anti-vibration braid, high-density ground shielding, aluminum foil, and FPE insulation creates a highly effective multilayer protection. This architecture allows for worry-free use even in electrically dense environments with numerous electronic devices.

Cable that I haven't been able to compare with others since it's my first and part of my first home theater system, but I haven't noticed any flaws so far (as of 12/28/2024).
