Advance Paris X-i75

The Advance Paris X-i75 is an integrated amplifier delivering 75 watts per channel into 8 ohms. It uses class AB amplification and features a built-in digital-to-analog converter. It also offers a specific operating mode called Hi Bias. This model is part of Advance Paris’s philosophy, established in 1995, which aims to combine modern features with traditional hi-fi design.

Classic Construction and Understated Design

The X-i75 adopts a deliberately traditional aesthetic that may come as a surprise in today’s landscape. Its glossy black methacrylate front panel features three elements: a power push button on the left, a large central rotary knob made of solid aluminum, and a 6.35 mm headphone jack on the right. Despite this minimalist layout, the device conceals remarkable functional complexity.

The stamped steel chassis provides notable structural rigidity for a device in this category. Its dimensions of 430 x 120 x 320 mm adhere to the standard hi-fi equipment format, while the weight of 8.6 kg reflects the presence of substantial internal components. The sides incorporate large extruded aluminum heat sinks, essential for dissipating the heat generated by the power stages.

The internal layout reveals meticulous design. At the center sits a generously sized toroidal transformer (11.5 x 7 cm in diameter), ensuring a power supply capable of delivering the current needed for musical transients. The printed circuit boards feature an unusual bright red color, with physical separation of the left and right channels to minimize crosstalk. The DAC board, based on a Wolfson WM8740 converter, occupies the upper right section of the chassis.

Hi Bias Mode: A Unique Approach to Amplification

One of the X-i75’s distinctive features is its “Hi Bias” operating mode, which can be activated via a switch on the rear panel. This function alters the bias point of the output transistors, allowing the amplifier to deliver its first few watts in pure class A before automatically switching to class AB above a certain power threshold, estimated at around 15 watts.

This operating mode offers theoretical advantages in terms of linearity and reduced crossover distortion on low-level signals. The power transistors, configured in push-pull, thus benefit from more favorable operating conditions when listening at moderate volumes. The trade-off is increased idle power consumption and greater heat output, hence the presence of appropriately sized heat sinks.

Connectivity Designed for Versatility

The rear panel of the X-i75 reflects a commitment to maximum integration. The analog section includes eight line inputs (CD, tuner, four auxiliaries, plus decouplable preamplifier RCA inputs), along with a phono input compatible with moving magnet (MM) cartridges. The standardized input impedance of 47 kΩ ensures compatibility with most sources.

The digital section features three S/PDIF inputs—one optical and two coaxial—capable of handling signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz. The AK4113 converter ensures reception of digital streams with reduced jitter. Two USB ports complete the setup: a type A port allows direct playback from a USB stick or external hard drive (MP3 files), while a type B port turns the amplifier into an audio interface for a computer, with native support for high-resolution streams thanks to the X-MOS controller operating in asynchronous mode.

A proprietary connector accommodates the optional Bluetooth module X-FTB01, while a 5V output powers wireless receivers such as the WTX-500 (Bluetooth) or WTX-Microstreamer (Wi-Fi). These upgrade options allow the amplifier to adapt to modern uses without compromising its core architecture.

Control Interface: Between Apparent Simplicity and Complex Operation

The central rotary knob manages all control functions. A first press allows input selection by rotation. Subsequent presses access tone controls (bass and treble, ±10 dB), balance, bypass mode (bypassing tone circuits), loudness, and the APD function (automatic standby). Control returns to volume adjustment after cycling through the entire menu.

This minimalist approach can be confusing at first. Sequential navigation requires memorizing the order of functions and may lead to handling errors, especially when accidentally switching from one function to another. The delay between each menu level takes some getting used to in order to avoid accidental selections.

The supplied remote control, which is generously sized, replicates all functions while adding direct shortcuts and a mute function. Compatible with the entire Advance Paris range, it allows centralized control of a complete system. However, its unusual length and less-than-ideal balance may require some adjustment.
