Focal 100 IW6 mounting kit
Focal 100 IW6 Mounting Kit
Installing an in-wall speaker in a wall that is still open is an opportunity to establish its position once and for all, before plasterboard covers the framing. This Focal pre-installation kit serves that purpose for the 100 IW6 in-wall speaker: a frame attached to the studs marks the opening in the right place, the plasterboard installer cuts around it, and the speaker fits into it once the finishing work is complete.
A marker installed before the wall is closed up
The kit combines a positioning frame and a mounting strip. It is installed on the partition framing, whether metal tracks or a timber structure, during structural work or fit-out, before the plasterboard is fitted. Its main benefit is construction-site coordination: the speaker’s position is decided and marked while the partitions are still open, where the other trades can see it. The plasterboard installer no longer has to transfer measurements or search blindly for the opening once the wall is closed up.
The frame leaves an opening of 273 × 170 mm, matching the 100 IW6. The speaker’s flange measures 298 × 195 mm and therefore overlaps the cutout by approximately 12.5 mm on each side, allowing a little tolerance in the accuracy of the plasterboard cutout. Once the speaker is in place, the frame disappears behind the plasterboard and the 100 IW6’s magnetic grille, which can be painted to match the wall.
The kit makes sense for a new build, an extension or a major renovation. The 100 IW6 often finds a place in this type of project: its moisture-treated Polyglass cone makes it suitable for bathrooms, and it serves as a surround speaker in 100 series home cinema systems, alongside the 100 IW LCR5 centre speaker.
A clean cutout and a square alignment
The frame screwed to the framing fixes the position of the opening relative to the studs. This avoids the common situation where a cutout made afterwards lands on a track and forces the speaker to be shifted a few centimetres, disrupting its alignment with the other speakers or the screen. In an installation with multiple speaker locations, fitting all the frames at once allows heights and symmetry to be checked before anything becomes irreversible.
Installing the kit is also the right time to run the speaker cable to the opening. With the frame in place, you know exactly where to bring the conduit, and can leave enough spare cable to connect the speaker comfortably on installation day.
Depth and compatibility to check on the plans
The 100 IW6 requires an installation depth of 88 mm, measured from the wall surface. That is shallow for a 16.5 cm speaker, but a thin lightweight partition does not always provide this much clear space behind the plasterboard, especially if a board is screwed onto the other side. This measurement should be checked on the framing before attaching the frame, while it is still easy to move the position.
The kit fits only the 100 IW6. Other Focal built-in models, such as the 100 IW LCR5, the 300 IW6 or the round ceiling models in the 100 series, have different cutout dimensions and each has its own kit. Allow one kit per speaker.

Frequently asked questions
Is the kit useful if the wall is already finished?
No. In a closed wall, the 100 IW6 installs directly into the cutout and is held in place by its six mounting tabs, which clamp the wall panel from behind. The kit is only useful when the framing is still accessible.
How many kits are needed for a 100 series 5.0 home theater system?
One per 100 IW6 speaker. For a 5.0 system combining one 100 IW LCR5 and four 100 IW6 speakers, you therefore need four 100 IW6 kits, plus the dedicated 100 IW LCR5 kit for the center channel.
Can this kit be used for ceiling mounting?
Focal presents the 100 IW6 as an in-wall speaker. For ceilings, the 100 series offers round models, the 100 ICW 6 and the 100 IC6 ST, which have their own pre-mounting kit.
Is a back box needed in addition to the kit?
These are two separate accessories. Focal offers fire-rated enclosures for its 100 series in-wall speakers; these should be planned for when required by building regulations, or to limit sound transmission through the partition wall into the adjoining room.
Does the frame remain visible once the speaker is installed?
No. It is covered by the plasterboard, then by the speaker’s flange and its magnetic grille. Only the front of the 100 IW6 remains visible.
When should the speaker cable be run?
At the same time as the frame is installed, before the wall is closed up. Run the cable to the opening and leave enough slack to pull it out through the cutout and connect it without putting tension on it.
