The Focal 100 IW6 is a 2-way in-wall speaker designed in Saint-Étienne. It offers a frequency response from 60 Hz to 23 kHz and is designed to be built into a wall to deliver sound discreetly.
The 100 IW6 embodies Focal’s expertise in its most refined and compact form. With external dimensions of 298 × 195 × 92 mm and an installation depth of only 88 mm, this speaker fits into virtually any in-wall configuration, even the most constrained. Its unibody chassis ensures remarkable structural rigidity that eliminates unwanted vibrations—a design detail often overlooked in in-wall speakers at this price point.
At the heart of the system is a 16.5 cm mid/bass driver featuring the Polyglass cone, an exclusive technology developed by Focal since the 1980s. This composite diaphragm combines fine glass microbeads applied to a cellulose pulp cone, creating a structure whose stiffness index surpasses conventional polypropylene by nearly 10 times. The result? Strikingly neutral midrange reproduction, free of coloration, with a linear frequency response built into the cone’s very design.
The 25 mm inverted aluminum dome tweeter, a hallmark of Focal since 1981, offers a remarkable technical feature: it can be rotated up to 20°. This characteristic, rarely found on in-wall speakers in this segment, allows you to optimize high-frequency dispersion according to your room layout and listening position. Unlike conventional positive domes that become inactive above 16 kHz, the inverted dome radiates directly into the air with optimal efficiency up to 23 kHz.
The 100 IW6 features a sophisticated passive crossover with adjustment options rarely seen in this category. The switches provide three positions for the tweeter (-3 dB, 0 dB, +3 dB) and three positions for the mids (-2 dB, 0 dB, +2 dB). This flexibility turns every installation into a customized acoustic solution.
These adjustments are not mere gimmicks: they effectively compensate for the specific acoustic characteristics of each environment. A room with large glass surfaces will generate high-frequency reflections you can attenuate. A living room furnished with absorbent fabrics and rugs may benefit from a slight boost in the highs. This adaptive philosophy stems directly from the OPC (Optimum Phase Crossover) technologies developed for the brand’s high-end Utopia speakers.
The “tropicalization” process applied to the Polyglass cone is another lesser-known technical asset. This protection allows installation in humid environments such as bathrooms or kitchens, without performance degrading over time. Variations in humidity and temperature do not affect the cone’s rigidity or its acoustic properties.
The mounting system represents a true evolution in the in-wall speaker category. Six optimized-grip mounting clamps ensure a perfect hold in the wall, eliminating any risk of vibration or shifting over time. The anti-drop screw system, an apparently minor detail, demonstrates attention to the installation experience. During disassembly for maintenance or adjustment, the screws remain captive in their housings, preventing them from being lost inside the wall cavity.
The frameless magnetic grille is the aesthetic culmination of the product. Unlike clip systems that often create uneven pressure points and can generate unwanted vibrations, magnetic fastening ensures uniform, silent contact. The grille can be painted to blend seamlessly with your interior decor, making the speaker virtually invisible once installed.
The nominal 8-ohm impedance with a minimum of 7.2 ohms ensures universal compatibility with all amplifiers on the market, whether hi-fi or home theater. This stable impedance—often problematic with budget in-wall speakers—ensures optimal operation even with modest 25-watt amplifiers, while accepting up to 120 watts for more ambitious setups.
The 100 IW6 defies traditional classifications with its ability to adapt to a wide range of use cases. In stereo configuration in a bedroom or office, it delivers a surprisingly wide soundstage for an in-wall speaker, with imaging precision that rivals traditional bookshelf speakers. Tests conducted by specialist publications consistently highlight this ability to create a cohesive sonic bubble, even with significant spacing between speakers.
In multichannel home theater configurations, the 100 IW6 can take on all roles: main fronts for smaller spaces, side or rear surrounds, or even height channels for Dolby Atmos setups. Its extended frequency response down to 60 Hz even allows for use without a subwoofer in small rooms, although an 80 Hz crossover with a subwoofer is still recommended to fully exploit the system’s dynamic potential.
With a sensitivity of 89 dB/W/m, this speaker ranks among high-efficiency models for in-wall designs. This efficiency translates concretely into preserved dynamics even at low volume—a valuable trait for late-night listening or in environments requiring discretion.
Absolutely. The tropicalization treatment applied to the Polyglass cone protects the speaker against ambient humidity. This special process preserves acoustic characteristics even in environments with significant humidity fluctuations. However, avoid direct exposure to water splashes and ensure minimal ventilation of the wall cavity.
The 100 IW6 uses separate drivers (distinct tweeter and woofer) optimized for in-wall installation, while the ICW6 employs a coaxial configuration (tweeter at the center of the woofer) allowing indifferent wall or ceiling mounting. The IW6 generally offers better separation of frequency ranges and a more precise soundstage in wall-mounted use.
The 100 IW6 goes down to 60 Hz (-3 dB) and 48 Hz (-6 dB), covering most of the musical spectrum. For music listening in a room under 20 m², it can operate on its own. For home theater or for fans of electronic music rich in sub-bass, a subwoofer will provide the necessary foundation below 80 Hz.
Always start with the neutral position (0 dB). If your room has many reflective surfaces (picture windows, tile, bare walls), choose -3 dB to soften the highs. In a heavily damped room (thick carpeting, drapes, upholstered furniture), +3 dB will restore presence and air to the reproduction.
This feature transforms acoustic integration. By slightly angling the tweeters toward the listening area (typically 10–15° is enough), you significantly improve stereo imaging precision and tonal coherence. It’s particularly beneficial when the speakers cannot be ideally positioned relative to the listening point.
The grille is designed to be painted without significant acoustic impact. Use acrylic paint in thin coats, making sure not to clog the perforations. Spray gun or airbrush application yields the best results. Avoid thick or textured paints that could alter acoustic transparency.

Pair of speakers used for 2 years as surround back in a dedicated 24m² room. Built-in installation in a wooden panel, the assembly is easy thanks to the locking latches accessible from the front. I just had to spray-paint the magnetic grille black; it’s quick and easy to do. Nothing to report regarding the sound, it more than does the job for surround back with a Denon 3800 amplifier.

I’ve got a complete 7.2.2 Focal setup and I really like the sound.
The prices at this retailer are very good.
