The AT-VM95ML is the fourth model in Audio-Technica’s VM95 range, positioned between the versions equipped with elliptical styli and the Shibata model. It uses dual moving magnet (VM) technology and a 2.2 x 0.12 mil MicroLine profile diamond. This configuration enables precise groove tracking and offers an estimated lifespan of around 1,000 hours.

The MicroLine Diamond: Geometric Precision and Enhanced Longevity

The MicroLine profile (also known as MicroLine or Micro Linear) stands out for its complex shape, which significantly increases the contact area with the groove walls. With dimensions of 2.2 mil vertically and 0.12 mil horizontally, this diamond offers a contact area of about 115 µm²—almost double that of a standard elliptical diamond.

This particular geometry allows the diamond to follow high-frequency modulations engraved deep in the groove flanks, areas inaccessible to conical or elliptical diamonds. The aluminum cantilever transmits these microscopic vibrations to the magnetic system, where flux variations induce the electrical signal in the coils.

The “nude” (solid) mounting of the diamond directly onto the cantilever, without an intermediate metal shank, reduces the moving mass of the assembly. This construction minimizes inertia and improves transient response, which is especially noticeable in note attacks and subtle recording details.

Compatibility and Upgradability within the VM95 Ecosystem

The AT-VM95ML shares the same body as all VM95 series cartridges, identifiable by their color codes: blue for the conical VM95C, green for the elliptical VM95E, orange for the nude elliptical VM95EN, red for this MicroLine VM95ML, and brown for the Shibata VM95SH. This standardization allows for complete interchangeability of AT-VMN95 replacement styli.

The integrated brass threaded inserts in the body make mounting on standard half-inch headshells easy. Only two screws are needed for attachment, with no nuts required, simplifying installation and ensuring optimal torque. The total weight of 6.1 grams remains compatible with most modern tonearms.

The cartridge also accepts styli from the AT-XP range designed for DJ applications (ATN-XP5 and ATN-XP7), although the VM architecture is not optimized for intensive scratching. This versatility allows the cartridge to be adapted for different uses without changing the main body.

The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 25 kHz, far exceeding the audible spectrum. This treble extension, characteristic of MicroLine diamonds, results in detailed reproduction of upper harmonics and better instrument separation in the mix.

Channel separation of 23 dB at 1 kHz, combined with a channel balance of 1.5 dB, ensures a stable and well-defined stereo image. The vertical tracking angle of 23 degrees matches modern cutting standards, guaranteeing optimal tracking of both vertical and lateral modulations.

The recommended tracking force of 2.0 grams (range 1.8 to 2.2 g) represents a compromise between the pressure needed to maintain contact during dynamic passages and the preservation of records. The static compliance of 20 x 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne suits medium to high-mass tonearms, typical of contemporary turntables.

The recommended load parameters (47 kΩ impedance and 100-200 pF capacitance) correspond to standard MM phono preamp values. The coil impedance of 3.3 kΩ and inductance of 550 mH influence the high-frequency response curve, which is particularly sensitive to variations in cable capacitance.

Installation and Practical Considerations

Mounting the AT-VM95ML requires special attention to alignment. The fineness of the MicroLine diamond makes azimuth and vertical tracking angle (VTA) adjustment more critical than with an elliptical diamond. A precise alignment template and a tracking force gauge are recommended to fully exploit the cartridge’s capabilities.

The estimated lifespan of 1,000 listening hours is about three times that of an elliptical diamond. This longevity is due to the wear being distributed over a larger contact area and the quality of the nude square shank diamond (solid square shank).

Maintenance is limited to regular cleaning of the diamond with a dedicated brush and occasional use of a specific cleaning fluid. The removable red guard protects the diamond during handling, unlike the integrated flip-down guard system of the VM500 series.
