The bass performance of an in-wall speaker primarily depends on its cone surface area. With a 20.32 cm injection-molded polypropylene woofer-midrange driver, the IC-820 moves significantly more air than the 16.5 cm driver of the IC-620, its more compact equivalent in the range. The frequency response confirms it: it extends down to 42 Hz, compared with 47 Hz for the 6-inch model. The baffle and basket form a single molded piece, providing rigidity that limits unwanted resonances when the speaker operates in the lower registers. This is the practical difference compared with the entry-level IC-610, which still uses screw mounting. Installation requires a 25 cm cutout diameter and a 12.84 cm mounting depth, to be measured before cutting, especially between joists or beneath a sloping ceiling. The overall 28.1 cm diameter covers the opening once the grille is in place. For new-build projects, pre-construction brackets can be fitted before the boards are installed.

Grilles that blend into the ceiling

The IC-820 grille is held in place by neodymium magnets, with no visible frame or exposed screws. It can be painted to match the ceiling, allowing it to almost completely disappear once installed. Can the IC-820 be used as height channels for Dolby Atmos?

Its adjustable tweeter allows treble to be directed toward the seating area, an advantage for ceiling height use. However, it is a versatile full-range speaker rather than a specialized module: it is suitable for surround or height channels in a home theater system, subject to confirmation with the amplifier configuration.

Should a subwoofer be added?

For music and background sound, its extension down to 42 Hz is enough to provide body without reinforcement. For film soundtracks, where sub-bass extends lower, a dedicated subwoofer relieves the speakers and reproduces effects that the in-ceiling format struggles to reach.

Can the grille be painted without muffling the sound?

Yes, provided you use a thin coat and do not clog the NanoPerf perforations. Remove the grille before painting, avoid applying too much material, and let it dry flat so as not to distort its shape.

Does the IC-820 work with a standard hi-fi amplifier?
