Large rooms put in-ceiling speakers to the test: the greater the volume to be filled with sound, the more bass loses its foundation. The 8-inch format meets this requirement by moving more air. A 20 cm speaker in the ceiling
The bass response of an in-wall speaker depends first and foremost on the surface area of its diaphragm. With a 20.32 cm injection-molded polypropylene woofer-midrange driver, the IC-820 moves significantly more air than the 16.5 cm driver of the IC-620, its more compact counterpart in the range. The frequency response confirms this: it reaches down to 42 Hz, compared with 47 Hz for the 6-inch model. The baffle and basket form a single molded piece, providing rigidity that contains unwanted resonances when the speaker operates in the lower registers. A 0.484 kg magnet powers the motor, and the 92 dB sensitivity (1 W at 1 m) requires little power to fill a room. The IC-820 handles 5 to 120 watts, enough to take the peaks of a powerful amplifier in stride.
Treble aimed at the listening area
In the ceiling, a fixed tweeter sends its treble straight toward the floor, rarely where listeners’ ears are. The IC-820’s 25 mm silk dome pivots up to 15 degrees, allowing high frequencies to be directed toward the sofa or worktop. Silk smooths the upper end of the spectrum compared with a metal dome, a choice that favors softness during long listening sessions rather than bite. Tool-free ceiling installation
The IC-820 belongs to the Series 20, the level featuring the SwiftLock by Swarm system. Three spring-loaded locks secure with a simple press, without a screwdriver or drill, and automatically adjust to clamp the drywall without play or surface marks. This is the practical difference compared with the entry-level IC-610, which still uses screw mounting. The cutout requires a 25 cm diameter and an installation depth of 12.84 cm, to be measured before drilling, especially between joists or under a sloping ceiling. Its overall diameter of 28.1 cm covers the opening once the grille is in place. For new construction projects, pre-construction brackets can be fitted before installing the panels.
Grilles that blend into the ceiling
The IC-820 grille is held in place by neodymium magnets, with no visible frame or screws. It can be painted to match the ceiling color, allowing it to almost completely disappear once installed. Russound offers two NanoPerf perforation patterns, round and square, to suit the style of the room. This aesthetic detail matters in a living room or bedroom, where an overly conspicuous speaker can detract from a carefully designed space.
Mixing sizes in the same installation
The IC-820 shares its acoustic voicing with the IC-620 and the IW-620 in-wall speaker. The same tonal character links all three models, allowing the 8-inch version to be installed in large spaces and the 6-inch version in smaller rooms without a break in sound character from one area to another. This consistency benefits multi-room installations, where sound follows the listener from room to room. One pair comfortably covers a typical living room. Beyond around thirty square metres, or under a high ceiling where sound disperses, a second pair distributes sound pressure more evenly and avoids having to drive the speakers too hard near the listening positions. An installer will determine the spacing according to ceiling height and intended use, whether for background sound or focused listening.
What is the difference compared with the IC-820T?
The IC-820T is a single-point stereo speaker: a single chassis reproduces the left and right channels thanks to two tweeters and a dual voice-coil woofer. It is useful in a hallway, bathroom, or small room where installing two separate speakers would be complicated. The IC-820 remains the classic stereo choice, to be installed in pairs.
Can the IC-820 be used as height channels for Dolby Atmos?
Its adjustable tweeter allows the high frequencies to be directed toward the seating area, an advantage for ceiling-mounted use. However, it remains a versatile full-range speaker, not a specialized module: it is suitable for surround or height channels in a home theater system, subject to confirmation based on the amplifier configuration.
Should you add a subwoofer?
For music and background sound, extension down to 42 Hz is enough to provide body without reinforcement. For movie soundtracks, where sub-bass goes lower, a dedicated subwoofer relieves the speakers and reproduces effects that the in-wall format struggles to achieve.
Can the grille be painted without muffling the sound?
Yes, provided you apply only a thin coat and do not clog the NanoPerf perforations. Remove the grille before painting, avoid excess material, and let it dry flat to prevent warping.
Does the IC-820 work with a standard hi-fi amplifier?
It is an 8-ohm passive speaker that can be connected to any amplifier or receiver with speaker terminals. The MBX-AMP zone amplifier remains convenient for networked multi-room distribution, but there is no need to use a multiroom system to make it play.
