Russound IC-610: versatile in-ceiling speaker

Playing music in every room without a single speaker drawing the eye: that is the domain of in-ceiling speakers. The IC-610 from Russound is designed for this purpose, with refined bass, aimable treble and installation completed in just a few steps. Sold in pairs, it joins the brand’s new IC series, redesigned for both sound and installation.

A one-piece chassis for bass

The bass relies on a 16.51 cm driver with a thermoformed polypropylene cone, a rigid material that is not very sensitive to moisture and is well suited to ceiling installation, supported by a 0.312 kg magnet. Russound molds the basket and front baffle as a single piece. This one-piece design stiffens the assembly and limits unwanted vibrations, for tighter, more effective bass. The inverted parabolic surround around the cone contributes to this motion control. In practice, the response extends down to 50 Hz, enough to give most music some body. Like any in-ceiling speaker without an enclosed cabinet, the IC-610 relies on the available volume above the ceiling for its bass: a generous plenum helps, while a confined void restricts it.

Direct treble toward the listener

In the ceiling, a speaker projects sound straight downward, rarely where people are seated. The IC-610’s 19 mm silk-dome tweeter pivots up to 15°, allowing the midrange and treble dispersion to be angled toward the area where you actually listen. The result gains clarity as soon as you move away from directly beneath the speaker. Silk delivers smooth, rather rounded treble that causes little fatigue during long listening sessions, a character consistent with background audio use. Adjustment is done by hand, by physically aiming the dome: unlike higher models in the IC series, which add a treble control, the IC-610 does not offer an electrical attenuator.

Installation carried out with one hand

Russound has revised the installation system for this generation. The tweeter bridge features a design called Pin-Cushion EasyGrip, which can be held with one hand while the speaker is inserted into its opening, leaving the other hand free for the screws. The brand retains the same cutout diameters as its previous models: replacing older Russound in-ceiling speakers can be done without modifying the ceiling. It requires a 21.27 cm diameter opening, an overall diameter of 23.8 cm and, above all, 10.1 cm of depth behind the ceiling, a measurement to check before purchase when the void is occupied by ducts or insulation. A cutout template is included with the pair, and optional pre-construction brackets are available for installation planned from the building stage.

Paintable frameless grilles

Once installed, the IC-610 remains discreet. Its NanoPerf grilles have no visible frame: they sit flush with the ceiling and are held in place by neodymium magnets, with no visible screws or clips. The white finish can be painted to blend into the room’s color. The pair comes with round grilles; a square version is available separately, to match the speaker design with already square spotlights or access panels.

Its place in a multi-room installation

With an 8-ohm impedance, the IC-610 works with most amplifiers and multi-room controllers on the market. Its 88 dB sensitivity (1 W at 1 m) and 5 to 90 watt power range make it easy to drive: a few watts are enough to provide sound in a kitchen or bathroom, while it accepts enough power for a larger living space. Russound positions it for background audio rather than analytical listening. It favors even coverage and a pleasant tonal balance across an entire room; for a dedicated cinema room or highly detailed front-channel listening, the IC series models with titanium drivers and adjustable treble are more appropriate. A subwoofer remains the logical addition when you want foundation below 50 Hz for soundtracks.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IC-610 sold individually or in pairs?

It is offered as a stereo pair, not individually. One pair is enough to properly fill a small to medium-sized room with sound, with the left and right channels in the ceiling. For a large open-plan or long room, two distributed pairs provide more even sound from one end to the other.

Can it be installed in a bathroom or outdoors?

It is an indoor speaker. The polypropylene cone tolerates the ambient humidity of a bathroom when installed in the ceiling, away from direct water splashes. However, a covered terrace or any location genuinely exposed to the elements requires a model designed for outdoor use, which Russound offers in other ranges.

Does it work with a multi-room amplifier?

Yes. It is an 8-ohm passive speaker, compatible with a conventional amplifier as well as controllers and multi-zone amplifiers, including those from Russound. Stay within the 5 to 90 watt per-channel range and observe impedance requirements when several pairs share the same output.

How do you paint the grilles without degrading the sound?

Remove the grille from the speaker before painting, apply paint in a thin coat, preferably with a spray gun, and avoid clogging the NanoPerf micro-perforations: a grille loaded with paint muffles the treble. Never paint the driver or the tweeter dome.

What should be checked above the ceiling before cutting?

Allow at least 10.1 cm of clear depth behind the cutout, plus a few centimeters for the cable. Also check that there are no joists, ducts or pipes at the intended location, as well as the presence of insulation, which can interfere with installation and alter the bass response. The supplied template is used to mark the cutout once these points have been confirmed.

Can it be used as surround or height channels in a home theater?

Yes, a pair in the ceiling makes good surround or height channels, provided it is paired with main speakers and a subwoofer for bass. The aimable treble helps direct sound toward the seated listening area, a real advantage when the speakers are not directly above the sofa.
