Filling every room with music without a single speaker catching the eye: that’s the territory of ceiling in-wall speakers. The IC-610 from Russound targets this use case with refined bass, an adjustable tweeter, and an installation that takes just a few steps. Sold as a pair, it joins the brand’s new IC series, redesigned on both the sound and installation fronts.
A one-piece chassis for the bass
The bass relies on a 6.5-inch polypropylene thermally formed cone driver, a rigid material with low moisture sensitivity that is well suited to ceiling installation, backed by a 0.312 kg magnet. Russound molds the basket and baffle as a single piece. This one-piece design stiffens the assembly and limits parasitic vibrations, delivering tighter and more efficient bass. The inverted parabolic surround around the cone contributes to this movement control. In practice, the response reaches down to 50 Hz, enough to give body to most music. Like any in-ceiling speaker without an enclosed cabinet, the IC-610 relies on the available volume above the ceiling for its bass: a generous plenum helps, while a tight void limits it.
Directing the highs toward the listener
Mounted in the ceiling, a speaker projects sound straight downward — rarely toward where you’re actually sitting. The IC-610’s 19 mm silk dome tweeter pivots up to 15°, allowing the midrange and high-frequency output to be angled toward the listening area. The result gains in clarity as soon as you move away from directly below the speaker. Silk delivers a smooth, rounded high end that causes little listening fatigue over long sessions — a character well suited to background listening. The adjustment is made by hand, by physically orienting the dome: the IC-610 does not offer an electrical attenuator, unlike the higher-end models in the IC series, which add a treble control.
One-handed installation
Russound has redesigned the mounting process for this generation. The tweeter bridge features a design called Pin-Cushion EasyGrip, which can be held with one hand while the speaker is inserted into its cutout, leaving the other hand free for the hardware. The brand retains the same cutout dimensions as its previous models: replacing older Russound in-ceiling speakers requires no modification to the ceiling. A cutout diameter of 21.27 cm is required, with an overall footprint of 23.8 cm and, crucially, 10.1 cm of depth behind the ceiling — a measurement to verify before purchasing when the void is occupied by conduits or insulation. A cutting template is included with the pair, and pre-installation brackets are available as an option for mounting planned from the rough-in stage.
Frameless grilles ready to paint
Once installed, the IC-610 stays discreet. Its NanoPerf grilles require no visible frame: they sit flush with the ceiling and are held in place by neodymium magnets, with no visible screws or clips. The white finish can be painted to blend into the room’s color scheme. The pair comes with round grilles; a square version is available separately, to align the speaker design with existing square spotlights or access panels.
Its place in a multi-room installation
With an impedance of 8 ohms, the IC-610 is compatible with most amplifiers and multi-room systems on the market. Its sensitivity of 88 dB (1 W at 1 m) and power handling range of 5 to 90 watts make it easy to drive: a few watts are enough to fill a kitchen or bathroom, and it accepts enough power for a larger living space. Russound positions it on the background audio side rather than analytical listening. It prioritizes even coverage and a pleasant tonal character across the full surface of a room; for a dedicated home theater or highly detailed front-channel listening, the titanium-driver models in the IC series, with adjustable treble, are a better fit. A subwoofer remains the logical complement when looking for support below 50 Hz for soundtracks.

Is the IC-610 sold individually or as a pair?
It is sold as a stereo pair, not individually. One pair is enough to properly cover a small to medium-sized room, with the left and right channels in the ceiling. For a large open-plan or long room, two pairs distributed throughout provide more even sound from one end to the other.
Can it be installed in a bathroom or outdoors?
This is an indoor speaker. The polypropylene cone tolerates the ambient humidity of a bathroom when installed in the ceiling, away from direct water splashes. However, a covered terrace or any location genuinely exposed to the elements requires a model designed for outdoor use, which Russound offers in other ranges.
Does it work with a multiroom amplifier?
Yes. It is an 8-ohm passive speaker, compatible with both a standard amplifier and multizone receivers and amplifiers, including those from Russound. Stay within the 5 to 90 watts per channel range and observe impedance requirements when multiple pairs share the same output.
How do you paint the grilles without degrading the sound?
Remove the speaker grille before painting, apply a thin coat of paint, preferably with a spray gun, and avoid clogging the NanoPerf micro-perforations: a grille caked with paint muffles the treble. Never paint the loudspeaker driver or the tweeter dome.
What should you check above the ceiling before drilling?
Allow at least 10.1 cm of clear depth behind the cutout, plus a few centimeters for the cable. Also check that there are no joists, ducts, or pipes at the intended location, and note the presence of insulation, which may hinder installation and affect bass response. The supplied template is used to mark the cutout once these points have been confirmed.
Can they be used as surround or height channels in a home theater system?
Yes, a pair in the ceiling makes good surround or height channels, provided it is paired with main speakers and a subwoofer for bass. The adjustable tweeter helps direct sound toward the seated listening area, a real advantage when the speakers are not directly above the sofa.
