The Denon Home 150 succeeds the HEOS 1 in the Japanese manufacturer’s multiroom speaker range. This 2-way speaker with HEOS technology features a 25 mm tweeter and an 89 mm mid-bass driver, each powered by its own class D digital amplifier. Designed to blend into any room in the house, it combines wireless connectivity, high-resolution audio compatibility, and expansion options to create a stereo or home theater setup.

A concentration of technology in a compact format

Measuring 187 × 120 × 120 mm and weighing just 1.7 kg, the Home 150 follows in the tradition of Denon’s compact speakers while modernizing the concept. The enclosure has a rectangular shape with rounded corners, wrapped in a technical fabric that is resistant to stains and water. Two finishes are available: dark charcoal gray with black trim, or light gray with white accents.

The top panel conceals a touch control interface that lights up automatically thanks to a proximity sensor. This elegant solution preserves the speaker’s clean look when it’s not in use. The controls include play/pause, volume adjustment, and three programmable preset buttons for instant access to your Internet radio stations, playlists, or other favorite sources.

On the back, physical connectivity comes in several options: an RJ-45 Ethernet port for a stable wired network connection, a USB-A port for playing audio files from a USB flash drive or external hard drive, a 3.5 mm mini-jack auxiliary input for analog sources, as well as a threaded insert for wall mounting. This versatile connectivity offers multiple ways to access your music content according to your preferences and setup.

An acoustic design that breaks with convention

Denon has made an unusual technical choice for a speaker of this size: a sealed cabinet with no port or passive radiator. Whereas most manufacturers aim to extract the maximum acoustic energy from a small volume using bass-reflex systems, Denon prioritizes precision. This sealed-box design delivers tighter, more controlled bass and reduces interaction issues with walls or furniture when the speaker is placed on a shelf or in a corner.

The 89 mm mid-bass driver and 25 mm tweeter form a classic 2-way configuration, but being driven by two dedicated digital amplifiers and a DSP processor ensures signal optimization. The speaker also offers a placement equalizer accessible via the HEOS app, with three settings depending on whether the speaker is in an open space, near a wall, or in a corner. This room correction function makes installation easier and compensates for unwanted bass reinforcement related to positioning.

The HEOS platform at the heart of the system

The HEOS ecosystem, developed by Denon since 2014, is the nervous system of the Home 150. This multiroom platform allows the speaker to connect to the home network via Wi‑Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) or Ethernet. The HEOS app, available on iOS and Android, centralizes access to many streaming services: Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music HD, Tidal, Deezer, TuneIn, Napster, SoundCloud, and more. It also lets you play audio files stored on your local network.

High-resolution audio compatibility extends to FLAC, WAV, and ALAC files up to 192 kHz / 24-bit, as well as DSD tracks at 2.8 MHz and 5.6 MHz. This support for high-definition formats reflects Denon’s commitment to sound quality, even on its most compact model. The rear USB port enables local playback of these files without going through the network.

Beyond streaming, HEOS lets you build a multiroom audio system by combining multiple compatible devices from Denon and Marantz: Home 150, 250, and 350 speakers, amplifiers, soundbars, subwoofers, AV receivers. You can play the same music in every room or different content in different zones. The app manages everything from a single control point.

Stereo expansion and advanced configurations

The Home 150 operates in mono mode, making it an ideal speaker for a bedroom, kitchen, or office. However, the HEOS app lets you pair two Home 150 units to create a true stereo pair, one reproducing the left channel and the other the right channel. This wireless configuration delivers a more expansive soundstage than a single speaker, while retaining simple installation.

Integration goes even further with the option to use a pair of Home 150 speakers as rear channels in a 5.1 home theater setup. By pairing them with the Denon Home Sound Bar 550 and the DSW-1H HEOS-compatible wireless subwoofer, you get a complete surround system. This modularity allows you to start with one or two speakers and gradually expand your setup as needed.

Since the HEOS protocol is built into many products from Denon and Marantz, you can integrate the Home 150 into an existing ecosystem. It will communicate natively with high-end AV receivers, network players, mini-systems, or other multiroom speakers from these two brands.

Voice assistants and hands-free control

Depending on the version you choose, the Home 150 includes microphones for voice control. The standard version offers native Amazon Alexa support once activated via the HEOS app. It lets you start playback, adjust the volume, skip tracks, or call on the assistant hands-free. Compatibility with Google Assistant and Siri is available via external devices or AirPlay 2.

For those who prefer to do without microphones, Denon offers the Home 150 NV (No Voice), an otherwise identical version but without any audio sensors. This variant addresses the concerns of users who do not want any potential listening device in their home, while retaining all of the speaker’s audio features and connectivity.

Bluetooth 4.2 provides a simple alternative for streaming music from a smartphone, tablet, or computer without using the local network. AirPlay 2 further enhances the experience for the Apple ecosystem, allowing streaming from iOS and macOS with multiroom synchronization and control via the Home app or Siri.
