Overview

Cleaning your records without waking up the whole household: that’s the challenge taken on by this record-cleaning machine made in Germany. A successor to the Smart Matrix Professional, this “Silent” version adopts the technical components of the Double Matrix Professional Sonic, Clearaudio’s high-end model, while focusing on a drastic reduction in noise levels. A semi-automatic device that combines powerful suction with whisper-quiet operation.

A 500-watt turbine under an acoustic hood

Vacuum-based machines have long been synonymous with noise. Clearaudio has worked on internal isolation to contain the decibels produced by its 500-watt turbine. The result, measured at around 63 to 70 dB depending on test conditions, places the Smart Matrix Silent among the quietest models in its category. This sound level is roughly equivalent to that of a normal conversation, which allows you to use the device in a living room without disturbing others – a real plus for extended cleaning sessions.

The rigid chassis also contributes to this acoustic attenuation. The whole unit gives an impression of robustness, with a weight of 10.6 kg that ensures good stability during operation.

Three buttons, one multifunction arm

The interface is limited to three touch-sensitive buttons on the top of the unit: “Liquid” for applying the cleaning fluid, “Vacuum” for suction, and “Platter” to reverse the direction of the platter’s rotation. This simplicity does not mean limited functionality. The bidirectional platter optimizes cleaning and suction by alternating rotation directions, while the built-in pump automatically doses the fluid.

The cleaning arm deserves special attention. Equipped with microfiber strips, it handles both fluid application and residue suction. A slider lets you adjust it to three formats: 12” LPs (33 rpm), 10” EPs (25 cm), and 7” singles (45 rpm). This versatility eliminates the need to purchase additional arms, which are often sold at a high price by other manufacturers. To start the cleaning cycle, simply swing the arm over the record: the platter starts rotating automatically, with no need to press a start button.

Components borrowed from the professional model

Clearaudio has chosen to share the critical components between the Smart Matrix Silent and the Double Matrix Professional Sonic. The motor, pump, fresh-fluid tank, and waste-water reservoir are identical. This technical kinship guarantees durability comparable to that of the reference model, while maintaining a more accessible price point.

The touch push-buttons are also carried over from the higher-end model’s design, replacing the toggle switches of previous generations. Everything feels coherent, from the precision-machined aluminum record clamp to the reservoir’s filling cap.

Everyday setup and maintenance

The machine arrives assembled and ready to use. Commissioning is limited to filling the fluid tank via the opening at the rear, using the supplied funnel. A quarter of the included bottle is enough to get started. The waste-water tank, with a capacity of around 0.5 liters, is emptied via a tube accessible at the back of the unit after 30 to 40 cleaning cycles.

The cleaning arm can be removed without tools, making transport and replacement of the microfiber strips easier. Clearaudio nevertheless recommends waiting 24 hours after replacing these strips to allow the adhesive to dry completely. Shellac records require a specific fluid, as standard vinyl cleaner can damage this material.

The main power switch on the back fully cuts the power: in the 0 position, consumption drops to zero watts, with no residual standby.

Supported formats and universal adapter

The supplied record clamp is compatible with all vinyl and shellac disc formats. Its design protects the center label while keeping the record firmly in place during rotation. The included universal adapter lets you switch from one format to another without complex handling.

The machine cleans one side at a time, unlike the Double Matrix, which treats both sides simultaneously. This single-sided operation means you have to flip the record manually for a complete clean, which lengthens the total duration of the process but offers finer control over each side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use any cleaning fluid?

Clearaudio recommends its own fluids to ensure the best results. Foaming liquids should be avoided as they can damage the pump. Soap-based solutions, although sometimes effective, are not recommended by the manufacturer.

What is the capacity of the fresh-fluid reservoir?

The reservoir holds about 0.4 liters of cleaning fluid. This quantity allows for several dozen washes, depending on the dosage used.

Should new records be cleaned as well?

Yes. New records often retain chemical residues from the pressing process. Cleaning them before the first playback removes these deposits and improves sound quality right from the first listen.

Is the protective cover included?

No, the acrylic dust cover is sold separately. The unit comes with the universal record clamp, an adapter, a funnel, cleaning fluid, and spare microfiber strips.

How do you know when to refill the fluid tank?

Unlike the Double Matrix Professional Sonic, the Smart Matrix Silent does not have a level indicator. You need to monitor the amount of fluid being applied and refill the reservoir when the flow noticeably decreases.
