Six metres is the length that lets the subwoofer move away from the base of the TV unit to the corner of the room where it sounds best, without an extension or adapter. This mono RCA cable incorporates the two technologies underpinning the entire Wireworld range, DNA Helix conductor geometry and Composilex 3 insulation, in a slim, flexible design that slips along a skirting board or under a rug.
An ordinary cable groups together dozens of bare copper strands pressed against one another, or uses a solid conductor. In both cases, the signal generates small, swirling parasitic currents within the metal, known as eddy currents, which consume some of its energy and alter its content. DNA Helix geometry (short for Delineated Neutralizing Array, protected by two US patents) tackles this problem differently: the Stream Subwoofer’s two conductors contain a total of eight individually insulated strands, arranged in parallel on a two-layer twisted structure. Each strand remains separate from its neighbours, and the signal flows evenly without spreading from one strand to another.
The metal is high-purity oxygen-free copper, with most of the oxygen that promotes conductor oxidation over time removed. The cross-sectional area of 0.16 mm² per conductor (25 AWG in American notation) may seem modest for a six-metre cable. It is more than sufficient: a powered subwoofer receives a line-level signal with very low current, and the total resistance of the connection (around one ohm over this length) remains negligible compared with a subwoofer input of several thousand ohms. The cable’s slimness is an advantage here, as it gives it its flexibility.
Full-coverage shielding protects the signal from external interference, which matters over six metres of cable that will inevitably cross mains leads or a power strip. Another source of noise develops inside the cable itself: where the conductor touches its insulation, movement, vibration and the passage of the signal cause tiny electrostatic charges and discharges. This is triboelectric noise. Common insulation materials (PVC, polyethylene, Teflon) offer either low losses or low triboelectric noise, rarely both. Composilex 3, a third-generation composite material developed by Wireworld, combines these two qualities. It is also used in the brand’s Series 8 cables, positioned several tiers higher in the catalogue.
Wireworld develops its cables through comparative listening: each prototype is compared with a virtually lossless direct connection between two devices, which serves as a reference. The aim is to come as close as possible to what the absence of a cable would deliver, rather than imparting a particular sonic character.
Subwoofer placement has a far greater impact on bass reproduction than the subwoofer itself: a shift of just a few dozen centimetres can make a note swell or disappear, depending on how the waves reinforce or cancel one another in the room. With six metres, the position can be chosen by ear, moving the subwoofer until the most even bass is found, then routing the cable accordingly. It connects the subwoofer output (often labelled Sub Out, Pre Out Sub or LFE) of an AV receiver or stereo amplifier to the subwoofer’s input.
Its flexibility makes it easy to route along walls, behind furniture or under fitted carpet, where a thicker cable would resist tight bends. The RCA plugs with 24-carat gold-plated contacts fulfil their main role over time: gold does not oxidise and maintains a clean contact through repeated connections, without any claim to improve signal conduction. The length is fixed, and the factory-fitted plugs cannot be dismantled to shorten the cable; if the excess length gets in the way, a wide loop tucked behind the furniture works very well.
Sold individually. A subwoofer connection carries only one channel, the bass channel, and a single cable is sufficient for the vast majority of setups. A setup with two subwoofers requires two cables.
To the input marked LFE if available, or otherwise to the left input, as indicated in the manual for most subwoofers. The subwoofer’s crossover frequency setting should then be set to its maximum position or to LFE mode, with the AV receiver handling the filtering. Some subwoofers work differently, so the manual remains the reference.
No. A coaxial digital connection requires a cable with a characteristic impedance of 75 ohms, which an analog interconnect cable does not have. Wireworld offers separate 75-ohm coaxial cables for this purpose.
Yes, it carries any line-level analog signal. You will then need two, one for each channel. For a standard short stereo connection, the Stream interconnect version sold in pairs is more practical.
Rarely. This low hum almost always comes from a ground loop: two devices grounded through different paths, often via the TV antenna cable or set-top box. Unplugging the antenna cable is a quick way to check. A ground loop isolator fitted to the antenna connection solves the problem in most cases, whereas changing the subwoofer cable does not.
The Stream 10 uses the same 0.16 mm² oxygen-free copper conductors, DNA Helix geometry and gold-plated plugs, with a next-generation insulation material, Composilex 5. The Stream Subwoofer retains Composilex 3, the material used in the brand’s 8 series.
Its slim profile and flexibility make it well suited to this. It is best to use a conduit dedicated to low-voltage wiring, separate from electrical circuits, to prevent the cable from running alongside mains wires for several metres. Once concealed in the wall, it will no longer be easy to replace, so it is worth providing a conduit wide enough to pull a cable through later.
Not directly. Without a line-level subwoofer output, the subwoofer connects via its speaker-level (high-level) inputs, if it has them, using a standard speaker cable from the amplifier’s terminals. The Stream Subwoofer only works with a line-level RCA connection.
