Acoustic Architecture and Exceptional Materials

Kokutan, or Japanese striped ebony, forms the core of the ATH-AWKT’s sonic identity. This tropical hardwood takes over 200 years to reach maturity and displays distinctive brown and black veins, making each unit unique. Traditionally used in the making of wind instruments and pianos, Kokutan’s high density naturally suppresses unwanted resonances inside the housings.

Each housing receives a semi-gloss finish, hand-applied at the Naruse factory in Tokyo. This artisanal process highlights the natural beauty of the wood grain while preserving its acoustic properties. Kokutan’s patina deepens over time, giving each headphone a visual personality that evolves with the years.

The 53 mm drivers feature a Permendur magnetic circuit, a German-origin iron-cobalt alloy renowned for its exceptional magnetic properties. Typically reserved for high-performance compression drivers, this material generates a dense and uniform magnetic flux, allowing precise control of diaphragm movement. The lightweight and rigid titanium flange ensures faithful signal transmission without mechanical distortion.

The voice coil uses 6N (99.9999%) oxygen-free copper, precisely wound to minimize signal loss. This configuration achieves an extended frequency response from 5 Hz to 45 kHz, far exceeding the Hi-Res Audio certification requirement of at least 40 kHz.

The D.A.D.S. System and Bass Frequency Optimization

The Double Air Damping System (D.A.D.S.) is a major acoustic innovation developed by Audio Technica for its high-end closed-back headphones. This technology divides the internal structure of each housing into two distinct acoustic chambers, creating a sophisticated pneumatic control system.

The first chamber, located directly behind the driver, manages the rear waves generated by diaphragm movement. The second chamber, positioned around the periphery, acts as a tuned resonator that absorbs and redistributes acoustic energy. This architecture allows precise control of bass behavior without resorting to electronic equalization.

The result is deep, articulate bass reproduction, avoiding masking effects that can affect midrange clarity. Transitions between frequency ranges remain coherent, preserving the temporal integrity of the musical signal. This approach differs from simple bass-reflex vents by offering more progressive and natural frequency response control.

The magnesium alloy suspension arms combine lightness with structural rigidity. Their angle of inclination has been calculated to optimize pressure on the ear, ensuring effective acoustic sealing without discomfort. This specific geometry also helps position the drivers correctly relative to the ear canal.

The earpads and headband use genuine sheepskin, selected for its softness and durability. This natural material offers superior thermoregulation compared to synthetics, reducing perspiration during long listening sessions. Hand stitching ensures a refined finish and increased resistance to mechanical stress.

Weighing 405 grams (without cable), the ATH-AWKT is in line with other high-end circumaural headphones. The weight distribution, optimized by the design of the arms and headband, minimizes pressure points. The adjustment system accommodates different head shapes while maintaining stable positioning.

Professional Connectivity and Versatile Use

The ATH-AWKT uses the proprietary A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connector developed by Audio Technica in 2015. This coaxial interface ensures reliable electrical contact and lossless signal transmission, while allowing easy cable replacement as needed.

Two 3-meter cables are included. The first, intended for standard equipment, ends with a gold-plated 6.35 mm jack with an elastomer sleeve. The second cable offers a balanced connection via a 4-pin male XLR connector, enabling full use with high-end balanced amplifiers. This cable uses 6N-OFC copper with a textile sheath for increased flexibility and reduced microphonics.

Balanced connection eliminates common-mode interference and improves channel separation. This configuration is especially relevant with modern DACs and amplifiers offering native balanced outputs. The 48-ohm impedance and 102 dB/mW sensitivity allow use with a wide range of amplifiers, from portable devices to reference systems.
