PMC Prodigy1 Bookshelf Speaker: Studio-Quality Sound at Home

The Prodigy1 bookshelf speaker is one of the latest additions to PMC’s audio range. This two-way speaker features a 27mm tweeter and a 130mm bass driver, and is equipped with the ATL (Advanced Transmission Line) bass loading found in all PMC speakers.

The Prodigy1 is a compact speaker for stand or shelf mounting, designed for small to medium-sized rooms. It shares similarities with PMC’s compact nearfield monitors used in recording and broadcast installations worldwide. The speaker delivers a rich, dynamic sound with detailed resolution and an open top end.

ATL (Advanced Transmission Line) Technology

ATL bass loading is a patented technology that enables speakers to achieve deeper bass than other speakers with similar cabinet volumes. It efficiently uses the energy generated by the bass unit to produce deeper, tighter, and more powerful bass than most speakers of this size.

Laminair Technology

The Prodigy1 and Prodigy5 speakers feature some of the technologies developed for PMC’s flagship studio monitors. Laminair technology, for example, is also present in PMC’s excellent Twenty5 series of hi-fi speakers. Laminair is an aerodynamic vent that controls the air at the speaker’s exit by reducing resistance, increasing efficiency and eliminating airflow noise for a more accurate bass response and improved dynamic range.

The long-throw natural fiber bass driver works with the ATL as a single unit, which is equipped with an inverted dust cap to reduce high-frequency reflections. The voice coil and magnet promise “unprecedented output levels” for the size of the drivers. Both speakers also feature a soft dome tweeter, an evolution of PMC’s studio monitors.

Quality Control

Although more affordable, the Prodigy1 and Prodigy5 speakers still undergo PMC’s rigorous quality control procedures. They are measured and listened to against reference models and must be approved by their assembler before being packaged and ready for shipping. This ensures that the speakers meet PMC’s high standards and deliver the best possible sound quality.
