Yamaha R-N1000A silver

The Yamaha R-N1000A belongs to the brand’s range of network amplifiers. It delivers 100 watts per channel with class A/B amplification and features an ESS SABRE ES9080Q digital-to-analog converter as well as the YPAO acoustic calibration system with reflection control. It replaces the R-N803 and uses some of the technologies found in the R-N2000A. The unit offers HDMI ARC connectivity, supports high-resolution streaming up to 384 kHz, and is compatible with the MusicCast multiroom system. It combines the functions of a stereo amplifier, a network player, and a phono preamplifier.

Mechanical design in the service of precision

The R-N1000A’s chassis is based on Yamaha’s Art Base concept. This double-bottom construction incorporates a 1 mm thick iron damping plate fixed beneath the main chassis. This plate absorbs and dissipates vibrations that could degrade sound reproduction, especially in the low frequencies where the mechanical movements induced by the speakers are easily transmitted to electronic components.

The feet of the unit receive particular attention. Designed to dissipate vibrational energy while maintaining the central rigidity of the chassis, they contribute to the mechanical isolation of the whole device. This approach has its origins in the brand’s high-end models and has been adapted for the R-N1000A.

The printed circuit board follows a rigorously symmetrical layout for the left and right channels. The audio signals travel the shortest and most direct possible path between input and output, thereby reducing potential interference. This principle, at the heart of the ToP-ART philosophy, is combined with single-point grounding to eliminate ground loops that could generate noise.

The block capacitors and the power transformer have been developed specifically for this unit. The transformer provides optimal current capacity, enabling the amplifier to deliver its rated output of 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms with a total harmonic distortion of 0.07% across the entire frequency band. In dynamic conditions, power can reach 290 watts per channel into 2 ohms, reflecting substantial reserves to drive demanding speakers.

Three Amtrans resistors ensure the precision of the amplification stage, while the coupling capacitors from Toshin Kogyo have been selected for their electrical characteristics and long-term stability. The speaker terminals, machined from pure brass, guarantee optimal contact and a durable connection with the cables.

A reference-grade digital-to-analog converter

The ESS SABRE ES9080Q converter is the central element of the R-N1000A’s digital section. This 32-bit integrated circuit handles PCM signals up to 384 kHz and native DSD files up to 11.2 MHz. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 100 dB in Pure Direct mode, a mode that bypasses the tone control circuits to offer a minimal signal path.

The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 100 kHz with a variation of ±1 dB and tightens to ±0.5 dB over the audible band from 20 Hz to 20 kHz when Pure Direct mode is activated. These measurements place the R-N1000A on a par with dedicated audiophile converters.

The type-B USB input turns the amplifier into a USB DAC for a computer. A dedicated quartz oscillator improves the precision of the conversion clock, reducing jitter and its effects on sound quality. The digital inputs consist of two optical inputs and one coaxial input, allowing connection of CD players, Blu-ray players, or streaming boxes.

YPAO: acoustic calibration derived from home theater

The YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) system is built into the R-N1000A. This technology, developed and refined over several decades in the brand’s home theater receivers, now appears in the range of connected stereo amplifiers. Using the supplied measurement microphone, the system analyzes the acoustic characteristics of the listening room at a single measurement point.

The parametric equalizer operates with a resolution of up to 192 kHz / 64 bits. It corrects irregularities in the frequency response caused by the room, speaker placement, and surrounding materials. This correction is carried out automatically, without tedious manual intervention.

R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) complements the YPAO system. This module acts specifically on the first sound reflections, those that reach the listener’s ears in the first milliseconds after the direct sound. Depending on the wall materials and speaker locations, R.S.C. adjusts and optimizes how sound is perceived in the room.

The system also manages integration of a subwoofer via the dedicated output. The user can define the crossover frequency and switch the main speakers to “low cut” mode to delegate low frequencies to the subwoofer.

MusicCast and modern connectivity

The R-N1000A incorporates Yamaha’s MusicCast network system. This platform provides access to many streaming services: Deezer, Tidal, Spotify Connect, Qobuz, and Amazon Music HD are among the supported services. The MusicCast app, available for iOS and Android, centralizes control of the amplifier and access to the various music sources.

DLNA compatibility allows playback of audio files stored on a network server or computer. AirPlay 2 lets Apple device users stream their music directly from iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Bluetooth 4.2 provides wireless connection with smartphones and tablets, with support for SBC and AAC codecs.

The R-N1000A stands out from the lower R-N800A model by featuring an HDMI input compatible with ARC (Audio Return Channel). This single connection with the TV retrieves the sound and routes it to the amplifier, greatly simplifying use in a 2.1-channel home theater configuration. The two optical inputs can accommodate other digital sources such as a game console or Blu-ray player.

Analog connectivity is just as comprehensive. The phono input accepts moving magnet (MM) cartridges to connect a turntable. Two additional line inputs allow connection of a CD player, tape deck, or any other analog source. A pre-out makes it possible to connect an external power amplifier to bi-amp speakers or build a more ambitious setup.

A design that recalls the classics

The front panel of the R-N1000A is inspired by Yamaha amplifiers of the 1970s and 1980s, a golden era when the CA-1000 and its descendants made their mark on the brand’s history. The aluminum front panel has a brushed finish, available in black or silver. The round mechanical knobs echo the aesthetic codes of the iconic models while offering precise handling.

The format follows hi-fi standards with a width of 435 mm, a height of 151 mm, and a depth of 405 mm (antenna not included). The weight of 12.25 kg reflects the solid construction and quality components built into the chassis. The front display shows the selected source, volume, and various settings.

The front controls allow the user to select the source, adjust volume, balance, and tone controls (bass and treble). A Pure Direct button bypasses these controls for listening as close as possible to the original signal. The supplied remote control includes all functions and can also operate a Yamaha CD player.
