Rega Nd5: The New Benchmark in Moving Magnet Phono Cartridges

The Rega Nd5 is the latest addition to the range of moving magnet (MM) phono cartridges from the renowned British manufacturer. This high-performance cartridge is designed to equip high-end turntables, particularly the Planar 3 and Planar 6 models from the brand. It replaces the iconic Rega Exact after nearly 20 years of faithful service.

A Redesigned Look for Optimal Performance

The Rega Nd5 features a completely redesigned look, inspired by the MC Ania and Ania Pro cartridges. Its body is made from a glass-filled polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) blend, injection-molded with zero tolerance. This lightweight and very rigid material reduces stress on the tonearm bearings and facilitates the cartridge’s freedom of movement.

Neodymium Magnet Technology

In a groundbreaking move, Rega has integrated an N55 neodymium (Nd) magnet into the Nd5, making it the first moving magnet cartridge to exploit this technology. Neodymium magnets, often used in moving coil designs, are the most powerful magnets available commercially. By using this powerful magnet, the Nd5 offers unmatched power and performance, surpassing the capabilities of standard bar magnet designs.

High-Precision Elliptical Diamond

The Rega Nd5 is equipped with an elliptical-shaped diamond, whose geometry was achieved through a grinding process using polycrystalline artificial diamond. This diamond is mounted on an aluminum rod offering great rigidity. The resulting stylus ensures precise groove tracking and faithful reproduction of high frequencies.

An Optimized Design

Perfect Channel Symmetry

The Nd5 benefits from a brand-new generator geometry with perfect symmetry, allowing for precise balance of the left and right channels. The pole spacing has also been optimized to achieve better linearity and reduced crosstalk. The result: a stable soundstage and optimal instrument separation.

Miniaturized Parallel Coils

The Nd5 is equipped with miniaturized parallel coils, meticulously wound internally using ultra-fine 38-micron wire with only 1,275 turns. This complex process creates a low inductance and low impedance generator that significantly improves high-frequency response, ensuring that every nuance and detail of the recording is faithfully reproduced.

Generous Output Level

With an output level of 5 to 6mV, the Rega Nd5 delivers a generous signal, making it easy to pair with a wide range of MM phono preamps. It is thus undemanding and easily integrates into many setups.
