Overview

The only bookshelf speaker in the Prestige range, the 15B borrows technologies from the Persona models that are usually found on much more expensive speakers. Manufactured in Mississauga, Canada, it combines an aluminum dome tweeter and a 140 mm driver that share the same pure aluminum X-PAL diaphragm. The cabinet, clad in genuine walnut veneer with a satin finish, hides its screws at the back for a clean, modern look.

A protected, precise tweeter

The 25 mm tweeter uses a pure aluminum X-PAL diaphragm, damped and cooled with ferrofluid. Its distinctive feature is the PPA (Perforated Phase-Aligning) lens that covers it: this grille with concentric perforations of varying sizes blocks certain out-of-phase frequencies, smoothing the high-frequency response while increasing output level. The lens also protects the dome from accidental contact. The magnetic structure has been optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) to improve control and reduce distortion.

A suspension that changes the game

The 140 mm mid/bass driver features a brushed aluminum cone. The ART (Active Ridge Technology) surround is not glued but overmolded directly onto the cone in thermoplastic elastomer. This much stronger bond allows 50% greater excursion compared with conventional rubber surrounds. The result: a 3 dB increase in undistorted output and extended lifespan. The Nomex spider, ten times more robust than the cotton normally used, further enhances durability. The SHOCK-MOUNT system then decouples the driver from the 25 mm-thick baffle to prevent unwanted vibrations from being transmitted to the cabinet.

Walnut construction and finish

The cabinet is made from 19 mm MDF with a reinforced 25 mm front baffle, all braced with internal reinforcements. The walnut finish uses genuine wood veneer, grained and satin, which stands out from the Piano Black or Midnight Cherry lacquer finishes also available. The drivers are rear-mounted, which eliminates all visible screws on the front panel. The removable grille is attached with magnets.

The five-way binding posts accept bare wire, spades, or banana plugs. Their clamping is firm and easy to use.

Frequency response and off-axis behavior

The speaker reaches down to 57 Hz (±2 dB) under measurement conditions and extends to 42 Hz according to the DIN standard. For a bookshelf speaker of this size, the bass is surprisingly full, though adding a subwoofer is still recommended for deep-bass enthusiasts or home-cinema use.

Off-axis response remains stable: at 30° off-axis, the curve stays within ±2 dB up to 17 kHz. This consistency benefits setups where several listeners are not seated exactly on the speakers’ axis.

With an in-room sensitivity of 90 dB (87 dB in free field) and a nominal impedance of 8 Ω, the 15B is easy to drive. An amplifier from 15 to 150 W is suitable. Impedance, however, dips to around 4.5 Ω at about 200 Hz, so it is better to use an amplifier capable of handling moderately low loads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the magnetic grille affect the sound?

Paradigm states that the grille is acoustically transparent. In practice, listening without the grille is still preferable for critical listening, as any structure placed in front of a driver generates slight diffractions.

Is a subwoofer necessary?

For acoustic music, jazz, or vocals, the 15B is self-sufficient in a room of 15 to 25 m². For home cinema or electronic music with bass below 40 Hz, a subwoofer is a useful addition at the bottom of the spectrum.

What type of amplifier should I choose?

The 90 dB sensitivity allows the use of amplifiers with modest power. An integrated amp delivering 30 to 80 W into 8 Ω provides a comfortable margin. The minimum impedance around 4.5 Ω calls for an amplifier that is stable with low-impedance loads if you listen at high volume.

What other finishes are available?

In addition to Walnut, the Prestige 15B is available in Black Walnut (dark stained, satin walnut), Piano Black (gloss black lacquer), and Midnight Cherry (black lacquer with a wood-grain effect depending on the lighting).

Is the 15B suitable as a rear speaker in a Prestige system?

Yes, it integrates perfectly with the 75F, 85F, or 95F floorstanders and the 45C or 55C center speakers. For surround channels, Paradigm also offers the 25S, a bipolar speaker specifically designed for enveloping sound dispersion.

Do the drivers need break-in time?

A few dozen hours of use allow the ART surround to loosen up slightly. The difference is modest; the 15B is fully operational straight out of the box.

Can the 15B be used on a desk?

Its depth of nearly 28 cm and weight of 7.3 kg require a deep, stable desk. If placed too close to a rear wall or the edges of the desk, the bass can become overpowering. Angled stands or decoupling feet improve integration.
