Cambridge Audio EXN100: The Next-Generation Audiophile Network Player
The Cambridge Audio EXN100 represents a significant advancement in the realm of high-end network players. As the successor to the renowned CXN100, the EXN100 pushes the boundaries of digital audio quality even further. Cambridge Audio’s engineers have meticulously optimized every aspect of the signal path to achieve exceptional sound performance. At the heart of the device is a reference-grade ESS Sabre ES9028Q2M DAC, capable of processing PCM signals up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD512 with remarkable precision. Significant modifications have been made to the post-DAC analog stage to enhance clarity and channel separation.
A Versatile Streaming Hub
The EXN100 incorporates the latest generation of the StreamMagic platform developed by Cambridge Audio. This proprietary technology offers extensive compatibility with the most popular streaming services, including Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Deezer, and Internet radio. The device is also Roon Ready certified and supports UPnP, AirPlay 2, and Chromecast protocols. Wireless connectivity is ensured by Bluetooth aptX HD, allowing high-quality audio streaming from mobile devices or even compatible turntables like the Cambridge Audio Alva.
Comprehensive Connectivity for All Needs
The EXN100 stands out for its versatility in terms of connections. It features USB, coaxial, and optical TOSLINK digital inputs, as well as an HDMI eARC input for easy integration with a TV. Outputs include unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR connectors for maximum flexibility when integrating into different audio systems. This extensive connectivity allows the EXN100 to serve as a central hub for all your digital audio sources.
Elegant and Functional Design
The network player boasts the refined design characteristic of Cambridge Audio’s new EX series. Its robust chassis features a milled aluminum front panel, available in the brand’s distinctive “lunar grey” finish. The device is distinguished by its large 1280x720 pixel color display, capable of showing album covers, track information, or even a VU meter-style display. The rotary control knob offers a pleasant and precise tactile feel for navigation and volume adjustment.
Integrated Preamplifier Mode
A particularly interesting feature of the EXN100 is its digital preamplifier mode. When activated, this mode transforms the device into a true digital control center with volume adjustment. This function can be controlled via the StreamMagic app, the optional EX series remote, or directly from the front panel rotary knob. This preamplifier mode makes the EXN100 an ideal partner for power amplifiers or active speaker systems.
A Smooth User Experience
The EXN100 offers an intuitive and responsive user experience. The device can be controlled via the StreamMagic app, available for iOS and Android, which allows easy navigation through music libraries and streaming services. The physical interface, with its large screen and control knob, also provides a pleasant experience for those who prefer direct interaction with the device. The system’s responsiveness and the interface’s smoothness contribute to a frustration-free listening experience.
Exceptional Sound Performance
The improvements made by Cambridge Audio to the EXN100 result in remarkable sound performance. The device offers a wide and deep soundstage with excellent instrument separation. The detail reproduction is exceptional, revealing subtle nuances in recordings. The EXN100’s sound signature is characterized by its neutrality and precision, allowing faithful reproduction of all music genres. Whether you’re listening to classical, jazz, or rock, the EXN100 will render each note with finesse and dynamism.

I’ve had an Eversolo A6 Master, a 3D Lab Transport Signature, the little Cambridge Audio MXN10, a Raspberry Pi 5 running Moode, and I can say that Cambridge Audio has done something excellent with this EXN100. The audio section is outstanding, the streaming functions are likewise, provided that your NAS supports the UPnP/DLNA protocol, because Cambridge streamers do not access NAS drives directly via file sharing. There are loads of radio stations and the features are well thought out. It loses 1 star because: 1) the remote control is impossible to get. Controlling it via smartphones is not as intuitive or as straightforward. 2) the StreamMagic app is great but could be improved: no Mute function, managing radio stations is very cumbersome, etc. 3) the brightness adjustment of the Streamer screen is not linear, there are only 3 modes: off, low, and high.
In conclusion, for streaming this is the best I’ve found with the EXN100. I use it connected to high‑end preamp/headphones, which drive a power amp that in turn drives a pair of PMC Twenty5 23i speakers. The sound is a delight. I use it every day and all day long, that’s the advantage of being retired. Enjoy the music...

Bonnes musiques...
