What the press says

The Cambridge EXN100 is a network player, DAC, and preamplifier for digital sources that is exemplary in every respect and highly recommended. Its price is reasonable for a model with a relatively high-end approach. It offers a wealth of features and equipment. Its ergonomics present no particular issues. While some may not fully embrace its neutral, direct, and transparent sound reproduction, its performance is undeniably strong. This is a serious piece of equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the EXN100 compatible with all audio file formats?

The EXN100 supports a wide range of audio formats, including ALAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, DSD (up to x512), WMA, MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+, and OGG Vorbis. It can play PCM files up to 32 bits/768 kHz and DSD512, thus covering almost all available high-resolution formats.

Can I use the EXN100 with my home theater system?

Yes, thanks to its HDMI eARC input, the EXN100 can be easily connected to a TV to enhance the audio quality of your movies and series. This feature allows the EXN100 to be integrated into a home theater system while benefiting from its advanced streaming capabilities.

How does the EXN100's preamplifier mode work?

The preamplifier mode transforms the EXN100 into a digital control center with volume adjustment. In this mode, you can connect the EXN100 directly to a power amplifier or active speakers, eliminating the need for a separate preamplifier. The volume can be controlled via the app, the remote control, or the front panel knob.

Does the EXN100 require a specific remote control?

The EXN100 does not require a remote control to operate, as it can be fully controlled via the StreamMagic app or the front panel controls. However, a dedicated remote for the EX series is available separately for those who prefer physical remote control.

Serge

I’ve had an Eversolo A6 Master, a 3D Lab Transport Signature, the little Cambridge Audio MXN10, a Raspberry Pi 5 running Moode, and I can say that Cambridge Audio has done something excellent with this EXN100. The audio section is outstanding, the streaming functions are likewise, provided that your NAS supports the UPnP/DLNA protocol, because Cambridge streamers do not access NAS drives directly via file sharing. There are loads of radio stations and the features are well thought out. It loses 1 star because:
1) the remote control is impossible to get. Controlling it via smartphones is not as intuitive or as straightforward.
2) the StreamMagic app is great but could be improved: no Mute function, managing radio stations is very cumbersome, etc.
3) the brightness adjustment of the Streamer screen is not linear, there are only 3 modes: off, low, and high.

In conclusion, for streaming this is the best I’ve found with the EXN100. I use it connected to high‑end preamp/headphones, which drive a power amp that in turn drives a pair of PMC Twenty5 23i speakers. The sound is a delight. I use it every day and all day long, that’s the advantage of being retired.
Enjoy the music...
