The Cayin CS-805A is a tube integrated amplifier operating in Class A. It delivers 2 x 50 watts of power in a single-ended configuration, a notable feature for this type of design. Its architecture is based on the combination of three types of tubes: 805A for power, 300B for the preamplification stage, and WE6SN7 for control functions, each contributing to the sound reproduction according to its properties. The CS-805A offers several connectivity options and allows for adjustments to the sound signature, providing a certain flexibility depending on listening preferences and associated systems.
The essence of the CS-805A lies in its pure Class A single-ended design, renowned for its superior transparency and musicality. This audiophile approach prioritizes quality over quantity, with a meticulous tube layout: the WE6SN7 handles voltage amplification, the prestigious 300B drives the intermediate stage, while the imposing 805A delivers the final power. This rare combination leverages the complementary qualities of each tube—the precision of the 6SN7, the harmonic richness of the 300B, and the controlled power of the 805A.
The entirely hand-wired point-to-point circuit reflects a handcrafted approach that optimizes signal quality. Unlike standard printed circuit boards, this method minimizes interference and preserves the integrity of the audio signal. The wide-bandwidth EI output transformers ensure faithful reproduction from 20Hz to 35kHz, covering the entire audible spectrum with notable extension at the extremes.
The unique feature of the CS-805A lies in its ability to offer a customizable sound signature via two distinct systems. The switchable negative feedback adjustment between 0dB and -3dB substantially alters the amplifier’s character. At 0dB, the sound is open and airy, rich in micro-details and spatialization. At -3dB, the reproduction becomes more controlled, with increased precision and characteristic smoothness.
The second adjustment system concerns the bias of the 805A power tubes, accessible via an integrated display on the top of the unit. This device makes it easy to optimize performance and extend tube life, while the hum balance control allows fine-tuning of the 300B tubes to eliminate any unwanted noise. These fine adjustments, usually reserved for high-end modular amplifiers, are accessible here without opening the chassis.
The CS-805A transcends the role of a traditional integrated amplifier thanks to its remarkable versatility. Its three RCA line inputs allow connection of various analog sources, while the dedicated pre-in input transforms the unit into a power amplifier. This feature is valuable for integration into a home theater system with an external AV processor or for use with a specialized preamplifier.
The front-panel headphone output, often overlooked on tube amplifiers, receives special attention here with a dedicated high-quality circuit. This section offers performance worthy of specialized headphone amplifiers, capable of efficiently driving most audiophile models, even those with high impedance.
Despite its tube design, the CS-805A delivers a substantial 2 x 50 watts of power, sufficient to drive the majority of loudspeakers on the market with authority. This power reserve, unusual for a single-ended amplifier, allows pairing with speakers of average sensitivity without compromising musical dynamics.
The CS-805A’s exceptional sound quality stems from the meticulous selection of audiophile-grade components. The motorized Alps potentiometer ensures precise volume control and outstanding durability. The porcelain tube sockets, superior to plastic alternatives, guarantee perfect electrical insulation and better heat dissipation.
The oversized toroidal transformer provides stable power even during the most demanding musical passages, while selected capacitors and carbon film resistors contribute to overall sonic transparency. This uncompromising approach partly explains the unit’s substantial weight (38 kg), reflecting the quality of the internal components.
The longevity of the tubes and circuits is ensured by several sophisticated protection systems. The soft start and high-voltage power-on delay protect the fragile tubes from electrical shocks at startup. Easily accessible high-voltage fuses intervene instantly in the event of tube failure, thus preserving the integrity of the surrounding circuits. These protections, usually reserved for professional equipment, demonstrate the attention paid to long-term reliability.
The “Pre-In” input allows easy integration of the CS-805A into a home theater system. Connect the preamplifier output of your AV processor to this input to use only the power stage of the CS-805A. This way, you can enjoy its exceptional sound quality for the main channels (left and right) while keeping your processor for surround management. This “bypass” configuration preserves the integrity of the audio signal for musical stereo.
Despite its sophistication, the CS-805A has been designed to simplify the user experience. The bias adjustment system with integrated display and advanced electronic protections make it more accessible than a traditional tube amplifier. However, it remains a significant investment that requires some basic knowledge. A specialized dealer can guide you during initial setup and explain the necessary periodic adjustments.
At 0dB (no negative feedback), the sound offers maximum openness, airiness, and harmonic richness, with a more expansive soundstage and more apparent micro-details. This setting favors musical emotion and is particularly suited to jazz, classical, and acoustic recordings. At -3dB, the reproduction gains in precision, control, and definition, especially in the bass, with a more neutral and analytical presentation, ideal for rock, electronic, and dense recordings.
“Tube rolling” (replacing the tubes with compatible alternatives) is indeed possible on the CS-805A. For the 6SN7, various vintage or modern alternatives exist, each with its own sound signature. The 300B tubes also offer a wide range, from standard versions to high-end audiophile models. The 805A tubes are more specific, with fewer alternatives. Each change requires a bias readjustment via the integrated system. This flexibility allows you to gradually refine the sound according to your personal preferences.
The supplied remote control allows you to adjust the volume, select inputs, and change the negative feedback level (between 0dB and -3dB). It does not provide access to bias or hum balance adjustments, which require manual intervention on the amplifier. The remote automatically memorizes the last settings used, even after the unit is turned off, making daily use easier while preserving your personalized listening preferences.
