Frequently Asked Questions

Can the TS-1 fully replace a separate audio system?

Absolutely. The TS-1 integrates all the elements needed for a complete audio system: network streaming, high-quality digital-to-analog conversion, and headphone amplification. Simply connect active speakers or headphones to have a functional system. For passive speakers, an external power amplifier is still required.

What is the difference between XLR and RCA outputs?

Balanced XLR outputs offer better immunity to interference over long distances and deliver a higher output level (4.5V vs. 2.2V). Unbalanced RCA outputs are perfectly suited for short connections and standard home equipment. Both benefit from independent level adjustments to optimize compatibility.

Is internal storage essential?

No, the TS-1 works perfectly without internal storage by relying on network streaming and online services. Adding an NVMe SSD provides the option to create a local library and turn the device into a network server, which is especially useful for large collections or environments without a stable internet connection.

How does the headphone amplifier perform with high-impedance models?

The amplifier delivers more than 1W at 33 ohms with an output impedance below 2 ohms, ensuring optimal control even with planar or high-impedance headphones. The 4.4mm balanced output offers slightly better performance for compatible headphones, but the 6.35mm output remains excellent for all uses.

Does HDMI ARC integration allow TV volume control?

The HDMI ARC input retrieves the TV’s audio signal but does not directly control the TV’s volume. Volume control is handled via the TS-1 itself, either through the touchscreen, the mobile app, or the included remote. This setup provides better audio quality control than standard TV volume.

Can multiple streaming services be used simultaneously?

The TS-1 handles one audio stream at a time but allows instant switching between different services (Spotify, TIDAL, Roon, etc.) via the MA Remote app. Switching between sources occurs without noticeable interruption, making it easy to explore different content.

How does high-resolution audio format management work?

The TS-1 natively supports formats up to PCM 768 kHz and DSD512 via USB, with automatic sample rate management. The dedicated femtosecond clocks optimize conversion according to the source format, ensuring faithful reproduction without artificial upsampling. The extensive compatibility covers all contemporary audiophile formats.

Very satisfied – excellent build quality and very good sound performance

The quality and finish of the Matrix Audio TS-1 are excellent. The device is very well built, with a successful design and a beautiful touchscreen. The display of album covers is particularly pleasant to use.

The sound quality is also there and is, for me, one of the device’s main strengths.

In use, however, there are a few details worth mentioning. Startup via the mobile app and network control is fairly slow, whereas it is noticeably faster when using the touchscreen button directly. This is not really bothersome, but it is worth knowing.

The app is generally well designed and pleasant to use, but still suffers from a few bugs. For example, after switching on the TS-1, the window indicating that startup is in progress regularly remains displayed and prevents use of the app. It then has to be closed and relaunched. This is a little annoying for a device in this price range.

Playback from a NAS works very well: library indexing is fast, navigation is smooth and the interface is pleasant. However, I have occasionally noticed some slowdowns or stuttering during playback on my local network. My TS-1 is connected via Wi-Fi, as I have no possibility of connecting it via Ethernet, which can obviously have an impact.

Despite these few reservations mainly related to the software and network connection, I am very satisfied with my purchase. The build quality, screen, overall ergonomics and above all the sound quality make it an excellent network player.

Now it remains to compare it with its new direct competitor: the Eversolo DMP-A8 Master Edition Gen 2…
