The FiiO FT7 marks the Chinese manufacturer’s entry into the premium open-back planar headphone segment. Equipped with a 106 mm driver featuring an ultrathin 1-micron diaphragm coated with 24-carat gold and pure silver, this model offers a unique technical approach. With its carbon fiber structure and patented uniform magnetic field system, the FT7 has clear ambitions: to compete with established references while maintaining an aggressive price point around $800.

A Construction Combining Lightness and Premium Materials

The FT7 adopts a sophisticated architecture where every component is designed for a balance between performance and comfort. The main structure uses carbon fiber, keeping the weight down to 427 grams despite the large size of the drivers. The rear grilles are made from natural zebrawood sourced from the high plateaus of West Africa, adding a distinctive visual touch while contributing to the acoustics with their honeycomb structure that optimizes airflow.

The self-adjusting headband features a dual-band suspension system, with an inner leather strap that efficiently distributes pressure across the skull. The joints allow for three-axis rotation, ensuring a natural fit for different head shapes. This complex mechanical design remains smooth in use, with no friction points or unwanted play.

FiiO provides two sets of earpads: genuine lambskin leather and breathable fabric models. The leather pads favor clarity and openness of the soundstage, while the fabric versions offer superior comfort during long sessions and add a slightly warmer coloration to the timbre. The clip-on attachment system allows for quick changes without tools.

Next-Generation Planar Magnetic Technology

The FT7’s 106 mm planar driver is the result of two years of development. Its 1-micron-thick diaphragm—about 100 times thinner than a standard sheet of paper—uses a high-performance PET (polyethylene terephthalate) substrate. This material, chosen for its exceptional mechanical properties, serves as the base for a patented multilayer coating.

The manufacturing process is directly inspired by the semiconductor industry, with metal deposition performed at a scale of 28 nanometers. This precision ensures a perfectly even distribution of 24-carat gold and pure silver layers across the entire diaphragm surface. Gold provides exceptional electrical conductivity and resistance to oxidation, ensuring stable performance over time. Silver complements this structure by optimizing electrical signal transmission.

The magnetic system uses 18 high-performance N52 neodymium magnets per channel, arranged in a double-sided push-pull configuration. This architecture generates a 1.5 Tesla magnetic flux, particularly powerful for headphones in this category. FiiO’s patented uniform magnetic field design uses magnets with rounded corners, eliminating magnetic flux irregularities that can cause distortion. This uniformity ensures that every part of the diaphragm vibrates in sync, minimizing mechanical breakups and unwanted coloration.

The supplied cable undergoes a unique cryogenic treatment: 6N OCC (Ohno Continuous Cast) monocrystalline copper is exposed to liquid nitrogen at -192°C. This process alters the metal’s crystalline structure, improving electrical conductivity and reducing internal micro-resistance. The cable features a balanced 4.4 mm Pentaconn termination, with included adapters for XLR-4 pin and 6.35 mm unbalanced jack connections.

Acoustic Performance and Measurable Characteristics

With a frequency response extending from 5 Hz to 40 kHz, the FT7 covers well beyond the human audible spectrum. This extension into the extreme lows and highs contributes to a sense of naturalness and spaciousness, even if frequencies above 20 kHz are not directly audible. The 32-ohm impedance, unusually low for a planar headphone, makes it easier to drive from portable sources.

The sensitivity of 94 dB/mW remains modest, ideally requiring a dedicated amplifier to unlock the headphone’s full dynamic potential. This characteristic reflects a deliberate compromise: FiiO prioritized sound quality and frequency extension over absolute ease of drive.

Total harmonic distortion remains below 0.1% across most of the spectrum, thanks to the rigidity of the ultrathin diaphragm and the uniformity of the magnetic field. Impulse measurements reveal excellent transient response, with particularly short rise and fall times that preserve micro-details and subtle textures in recordings.

A Significant Evolution Compared to the FT5

The move from the FT5 to the FT7 is much more than a simple step up. While the FT5 used a 90 mm driver with a 6-micron diaphragm, the FT7 increases the radiating surface while drastically reducing diaphragm thickness. This combination theoretically improves responsiveness and precision, especially in the reproduction of fast transients.

The magnetic system has also evolved substantially. The FT5 used 20 magnets per channel versus 18 for the FT7, but the latter employs more powerful N52 technology and benefits from the uniform field design absent in the previous model. This optimization results in better spatial coherence and reduced phase distortion.

The FT5 featured a deliberately warm sound signature, with generous bass and slightly recessed mids. The FT7 maintains a musical approach but with greater linearity and resolution. The natural wood grilles replace the FT5’s metal turbine pattern, subtly altering rear reflections and sound ventilation.

The most dramatic evolution concerns the diaphragm treatment. The FT7’s gold-silver coating, applied using semiconductor industry processes, represents a radically different approach from the FT5’s micro-plated aluminum-silver alloy. This exclusive technology partly explains the price difference between the two models.

A Carrying Case Designed for Protection

FiiO provides a custom-woven Yaoli linen storage case, specifically designed to hold the headphones and accessories. This natural material, both robust and breathable, effectively protects against shocks while preventing moisture buildup. The compartmentalized interior allows the headphones, cable, and adapters to be stored separately, preventing friction during transport.
