Hana ML

The Hana ML represents the technical pinnacle of Excel Sound Corporation’s M Series range. This low-output MC cartridge combines a nude MicroLine diamond mounted on an aluminum cantilever with a generator wound with ultra-high purity copper, delivering 0.4 mV output. Its cryogenically treated Delrin body and gold-plated copper top plate form a sophisticated mechanical interface between the cartridge and the headshell.

Technical Architecture and ML Innovations

The Delrin body (DuPont polyoxymethylene) replaces the composite of the S Series, offering resonance properties similar to vinyl with superior mechanical rigidity. The 1.5 mm gold-plated copper top plate increases rigidity, acts as a damper, and favorably alters vibrational propagation.

Cryogenic treatment of the magnetic circuit, performed near absolute zero, restructures the metals at the molecular level. This technique, applied to the alnico magnetic circuit components, creates a more precise and linear field. Weighing in at 9.5 grams, the ML is almost twice as heavy as the SL, broadening its compatibility with different tonearms.

The MicroLine Diamond: Optimal Tracking Precision

The MicroLine profile replicates the shape of the cutting stylus used for master discs. This geometry allows it to explore portions of the groove inaccessible to conventional profiles. The narrow contact edges penetrate deeply while maintaining a broad vertical contact area.

This configuration improves high-frequency tracking and reduces wear. Tracking ability reaches 70 μm at 2 grams, with a frequency response from 12 Hz to 45 kHz. Tests show that the MicroLine shape maintains its integrity over time better than elliptical or Shibata profiles.

Sound Characteristics and Musicality

The ML delivers a dynamic and engaging sound, contrasting with the more polished approach of the SL. The new generator uses 4N+ copper with 30-micron wire, creating an impedance of 8 ohms compared to 30 for the SL. This setup improves compatibility with phono preamplifiers.

High-frequency extension combines smoothness and speed without harshness. Violins retain their natural timbre, subtle musical cues are revealed, creating a coherent soundstage. The ML excels at conveying rhythmic energy while preserving tonal definition.

Positioning within the Hana Range

The ML crowns the M Series with its MicroLine diamond, surpassing the elliptical of the E Series and the Shibata of the S Series. The threaded Delrin body makes mounting easier compared to the unthreaded 5-gram bodies of the lower series.

Compared to the SL, renowned for its value for money, the ML offers a substantial improvement that justifies its price positioning. Beyond the diamond profile, the sum of innovations creates a cartridge with extended capabilities, as confirmed by direct comparisons.

Installation and Compatibility

Threaded metal inserts in the Delrin simplify installation. The stylus guard cleverly doubles as an alignment guide: when placed flat on the record, it automatically optimizes azimuth and vertical angle.

With a compliance of 10 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne at 100 Hz, the ML suits tonearms up to 16 grams effective mass. The recommended load impedance is over 100 ohms, ideally 200 ohms, though some users prefer up to 470 ohms depending on their system.
