The Amphion Argon3LX is a compact floorstanding speaker derived from the Argon3LS model. It uses a next-generation titanium tweeter, a redesigned crossover, and a passive radiator, a hallmark technology of the brand. This model builds on the Finnish manufacturer’s experience since 1998 and is designed to adapt to various listening environments.

A next-generation tweeter and a refined design

The Argon3LX marks a major evolution with its new 1-inch titanium tweeter, developed specifically for this X series. This unit significantly improves high-frequency response compared to the previous model, delivering striking levels of detail and clarity. The titanium dome, favored for its rigidity and lightness, ensures accurate reproduction up to 55 kHz, well beyond human hearing.

This tweeter is integrated into Amphion’s exclusive waveguide, now in its fifth generation. The U/D/D (Uniformly Directive Diffusion) technology addresses several fundamental acoustic challenges: it physically aligns the acoustic centers of the tweeter and the midbass driver, evens out dispersion over a wide frequency range, and minimizes cabinet diffraction. The waveguide, made from a carefully selected high-density material, has a smooth contour that controls directivity without introducing unwanted coloration.

The 6.5-inch aluminum woofer handles midrange and bass with a rigid yet lightweight cone, capable of perfectly controlled pistonic motion within its passband. This unit, supplied by SEAS in Norway, benefits from Amphion-specific treatment that optimizes its mechanical characteristics. Integration with the tweeter occurs at 1,600 Hz, an unusually low crossover point that brings several decisive advantages.

A unique approach to crossover and transducers

The revised crossover of the Argon3LX is one of the major improvements in this new generation. Amphion maintains its philosophy of electrical simplicity, using a minimal number of high-quality components to preserve signal transparency. Filtering at 1,600 Hz, well below the human ear’s critical region (2–5 kHz), ensures particularly coherent integration between the two transducers.

This low crossover frequency allows the tweeter to reproduce only the range where it excels, while the midbass driver handles most of the critical vocal and instrumental spectrum. The result is a near point source in the most sensitive area of our hearing, creating a stereo image of remarkable precision with exemplary phase coherence.

The rear passive radiator advantageously replaces a traditional bass-reflex port. This motorless diaphragm, precisely tuned by a calibrated mass, moves in perfect synchrony with the front woofer. This solution eliminates the turbulence and chuffing associated with ports, while allowing placement close to walls without compromising tonal balance. Bass gains in definition and control, extending down to 30 Hz (-6 dB) with remarkable articulation.

The high-density MDF cabinet uses thick panels with strategically placed internal bracing. A perforated plate behind the midbass driver, developed in collaboration with a Swiss university, controls internal airflow and stiffens the structure. This substantial construction, at 21 kg per speaker, ensures a complete absence of parasitic vibrations even at high volume.

Installation versatility and consistent performance

The Argon3LX stands out for its ability to maintain sonic qualities in a variety of listening conditions. Controlled dispersion technology provides an expanded listening area: multiple listeners can simultaneously enjoy a coherent stereo image without being confined to a single sweet spot. This feature, inherited from Amphion’s professional monitors, radically transforms the collective listening experience.

The passive radiator offers remarkable placement flexibility. Unlike bass-reflex speakers that require significant clearance, the Argon3LX can be positioned a few dozen centimeters from the rear wall without boomy bass. This placement tolerance greatly simplifies integration into real living spaces, where layout constraints often force acoustic compromises.

A sensitivity of 85 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms make the speaker compatible with a wide range of amplifiers from 50 to 250 watts. However, the Argon3LX’s exceptional transparency ruthlessly reveals the quality of the associated electronics. A quality amplifier with good current reserves will fully unleash the dynamic potential and resolving finesse of these floorstanders.

Internal wiring uses pure silver-plated copper, while the binding posts accept all types of connectors. The supplied plinth improves stability and effectively decouples the speaker from the floor via eight stainless-steel spikes. The compact dimensions (995 x 234 x 344 mm with plinth) facilitate integration into medium-sized rooms while delivering the physical and sonic presence of a true floorstander.
