Overview
The Phantom Ultimate 98 dB is Devialet’s new generation of wireless speakers. This compact acoustic sphere, designed and assembled in France, is the result of more than 15 years of research and development. It delivers 400 watts of power in a volume of less than 3 litres, with sound reproduction spanning frequencies from 18 Hz to 25 kHz.
A concentration of patented technologies dedicated to sound
The Phantom Ultimate 98 dB features the complete technological arsenal developed by Devialet since its creation in 2007. At the heart of this speaker lies the new-generation ADH (Analog Digital Hybrid) technology, an innovation that combines for the first time the refinement and linearity of Class A analogue amplification with the power and energy efficiency of Class D digital amplification.
This hybridisation operates on a principle similar to automotive power steering: the analogue amplifier sets the output voltage with absolute precision, while the digital amplifiers provide the required current. The result? Amplification with no passive components in the audio signal path, a natural bandwidth extending up to 5 MHz, and no thermal distortion thanks to constant dissipated power. The improved control algorithm between the analogue and digital stages now makes it possible to reach frequencies up to 25 kHz with remarkable clarity.
SAM (Speaker Active Matching) technology is the second pillar of this speaker. This algorithm adapts the audio signal in real time to the physical characteristics of the drivers, preserving their acoustic signature while protecting them. SAM continuously analyses transient and static signals to reproduce phase and amplitude with formidable precision, ensuring perfect time alignment between the recorded signal and the generated pressure wave.
The HBI (Heart Bass Implosion) system allows this compact speaker to extend down to 18 Hz in the sub-bass range. The two aluminium woofers, mounted back-to-back in a push-push configuration, generate powerful lateral excursion under high pressure in the sealed enclosure. This unique configuration produces bass with striking physical impact that can be felt as much as heard.
AVL (Adaptive Volume Level) technology, inherited from the Devialet Dione soundbar, dynamically adjusts equalisation in real time according to the content being played. From whispered dialogue to cinematic explosions, every sonic detail retains its place in the mix without ever losing intelligibility.
Master craftsmanship for uncompromising acoustics
The Phantom Ultimate 98 dB’s structure reflects a manufacturing approach where every detail matters. Its bi-injected composite shell combines an inner layer of glass-fibre-reinforced polycarbonate for structural rigidity with an outer ABS layer for absorbing unwanted vibrations. At the centre, an injected aluminium core acts as a backbone, capable of withstanding the colossal mechanical stresses generated by the drivers during dynamic passages.
Assembly is carried out under 1.2 tonnes of pressure, ensuring perfect structural sealing to aerospace standards. The woofers’ 2.5 mm diameter sealing gasket is compressed with equivalent force to guarantee the complete airtightness of the sealed enclosure. This construction maintains consistent acoustic performance even during extended listening sessions at high volume.
The drivers themselves are feats of engineering. The aluminium full-range transducer ensures reproduction of midrange and high frequencies with optimised directivity, while the two side-mounted stamped aluminium woofers provide maximum radiating surface in a minimal footprint. Each diaphragm is individually tested before assembly to guarantee absolute conformity with acoustic specifications.
The manufacturing process incorporates 50 quality-control tests, from individual components to the finished product. Each Phantom Ultimate passes through an anechoic chamber where its performance is measured and calibrated to match Devialet standards exactly. This manufacturing rigour, with 30% of production time dedicated to quality control, ensures consistent performance from one unit to another.
A connected ecosystem designed for the streaming era
The Phantom Ultimate 98 dB integrates naturally into the modern digital world thanks to the DOS 3 operating system, powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core NXP i.MX 8M Nano SoC processor. This robust software platform manages all high-resolution streaming protocols available on the market.
Wireless connectivity is based on dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) Wi-Fi 5 with 2×2 MIMO technology for stable transmission even in congested environments. Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC and AAC codecs enables direct connection from any mobile device. The speaker natively supports AirPlay for the Apple ecosystem, Google Cast for the Android world, as well as Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and UPnP to access streaming services directly.
Roon Ready (RAAT) certification places this speaker in the category of audiophile equipment compatible with this music-management platform favoured by music lovers. Multi-speaker synchronisation via the proprietary Devialet DOS 3 protocol enables stereo pairing with microsecond-level timing precision, creating a coherent and spatially defined soundstage. In stereo configuration, the sound pressure level reaches 101 dB SPL, transforming listening into a true sonic spectacle.
The mini-TOSLINK optical input accepts digital signals up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, enabling direct connection of a high-resolution source. The Ethernet RJ45 port ensures a stable network connection for high-definition streaming without the uncertainties of Wi-Fi.
The fully redesigned Devialet app offers an intuitive interface for setup and control. Beyond simple operation, it includes a 6-band parametric equaliser to fine-tune the sound according to the room acoustics, a night mode to reduce bass intensity in an apartment, and the ability to adjust latency for perfect synchronisation with the picture in home cinema use.
Iconic design and exceptional finishes
The Phantom Ultimate’s spherical shape continues a visual signature that has become iconic since 2015, while introducing subtle refinements. This geometry is not merely aesthetic: it optimises omnidirectional acoustic dispersion while minimising internal standing waves. The metallic side panels, available in glossy or matte finishes depending on the colourway, add a touch of sophistication while contributing to structural rigidity.
Three finishes are offered to complement different interiors. Light Pearl features a soft matte white reminiscent of ceramic biscuit, with pearlescent side panels that subtly catch the light. Deep Forest offers a deep dark green, almost black depending on the lighting, with glossy metallic accents. A special Opéra de Paris edition, born from the partnership initiated in 2017 with the prestigious institution, is adorned with genuine gold leaf on its sides, transforming the speaker into an object of sonic art.
The capacitive touch controls integrated on the top allow direct control of volume, playback and Bluetooth pairing without using the app. A discreet LED indicator shows operating status: off, starting up (flashing), or operational (steady white). This ease of use conceals the underlying technological complexity.
The visual spectacle offered by the moving side woofers is a Devialet signature. During bass-rich passages, the convex diaphragms pulse hypnotically, physically embodying the deployed sonic energy. This mechanical ballet, visible from several metres away, transforms listening into a multisensory experience.

Which accessories are compatible with this speaker?
The Phantom Ultimate 98 dB is compatible with the Tree stand (an elegant single-leg stand) and the Gecko wall mount for discreet installation. The Devialet Remote provides precise control without a smartphone. Accessories from the previous Phantom II range, such as the Cocoon carrying case, remain compatible despite potentially different finishes. Please note that the Devialet Arch stand is not compatible with this new generation. For optimal listening, Devialet strongly recommends using Treepod stands, which position the speaker at the ideal height while isolating it from floor vibrations.
How can speaker placement be optimized in a room?
Positioning plays a crucial role in acoustic performance. Place the speaker between 45 and 90 cm above the floor to maximize sound impact and dispersion. Maintain a minimum distance of 30 cm from walls to allow low frequencies to develop naturally without creating unwanted standing waves. The space in front of the speaker should remain clear for optimal sound propagation. The ideal listening distance is between 1.5 and 2.5 meters. In a stereo setup, space the speakers 2 to 3 meters apart, forming an equilateral triangle with the listening position.
Is this speaker suitable for home theater use?
The Phantom Ultimate 98 dB excels in home theater use thanks to several advantages. The optical input allows direct connection to a television to enjoy sound that is incomparably superior to built-in speakers. AVL technology automatically adjusts the dynamics to balance dialogue and sound effects. The latency adjustment function in the app ensures perfect synchronization between image and sound. In a stereo setup, the spatialization effectively reproduces cinematic atmospheres, even if it does not replace a true multichannel system for surround purists.
Are software updates frequent?
