Frequently Asked Questions

Can the DB62 be placed in a closed TV cabinet?

Thanks to its sealed, portless design, the DB62 can be placed in a closed cabinet or against a wall without issue, unlike traditional bass-reflex models that require clearance for their ports to operate optimally. This placement flexibility is a decisive advantage in space-constrained installations. Nevertheless, a minimum of a few centimeters around the cabinet is still recommended for thermal dissipation.

What’s the difference between the Debut 3.0 DB62 and the Debut 2.0 DC62?

Beyond the similar numbering that can cause confusion, these two models differ fundamentally. The DB62 (Debut 3.0) features the new aluminum tweeter versus a textile dome on the DC62 (Debut 2.0), redesigned aramid woofers with oversized magnets, and, crucially, a sealed design versus front ports on the previous generation. Internal bracing has been reworked and the grilles are now magnetic. These evolutions translate to greater clarity and better resonance control.

Is this center speaker suitable for stereo music listening?

Although optimized for dialogue and center effects in home theater, the DB62 has the technical qualities for music use—particularly in multichannel setups or to reinforce the center image of a stereo system. Its extended 50 Hz–38 kHz response and tonal neutrality allow convincing music reproduction. However, for pure stereo listening, the DB63 bookshelf models in the same series will offer more appropriate spatial rendering.

Is an entry-level home theater amplifier really sufficient?

The 87.5 dB sensitivity and stable 6-ohm impedance make the DB62 compatible with most AV receivers, even modest ones. A model delivering 50–70 watts per channel into 6 ohms already achieves comfortable listening levels in an average-sized living room. More powerful amplifiers will mainly provide better control during extreme dynamic passages and firmer bass grip, but are not essential to enjoy this speaker’s qualities.

Are the magnetic grilles really necessary?

The grilles effectively protect the drivers from accidental contact, particularly the aluminum tweeter dome, which remains fragile despite its rigidity. In environments with children or pets, they prove indispensable. Acoustically, ELAC has optimized their transparency, but a slight attenuation of the extreme treble remains perceptible. For critical listening, removing the grilles frees up the last few percentage points of performance while revealing the drivers’ technical aesthetics.

How does this speaker handle deep male voices?

The crossover frequency at 2,000 Hz places the tweeter/woofer transition above the fundamental range of male voices, allowing the aramid woofers to handle this entire spectrum coherently. Avoiding signal handoff in this critical zone ensures a natural timbre and preserved intelligibility, even for the deepest voices. The inherent mid-bass reinforcement typical of a center channel also helps give body and presence to male voices.

Do I have to pair the DB62 with other ELAC speakers?

While timbre matching is optimal when using speakers from the same Debut 3.0 series throughout the system, the DB62’s neutrality allows integration with other brands without glaring inconsistencies. The key is to maintain some consistency in the technologies employed (for example, avoid mixing ribbon tweeters with the aluminum dome) and to correctly calibrate levels and distances via the AV receiver’s processor.
