A rare wood that evolves over time

The FT13’s shells are machined from Purpleheart wood (known as Purpleheart in English), a South American species named for its distinctive violet hue. After arriving at FiiO’s Lianyungang workshops, this wood undergoes an unusual refinement process: kiln stabilization, natural aging for 90 days in darkness to develop its deep purple color, followed by CNC machining, meticulous polishing, and hand-applied high-gloss varnish. The result: each pair features a unique grain pattern, like a fingerprint.

Purpleheart has higher density and hardness than common woods, giving it natural resistance to corrosion and minimizing unwanted resonances in the shells. When exposed to light and air, these shells will continue to darken over time, taking on a purplish-brown or chestnut-brown hue over the years—a natural phenomenon that adds character to the product.

Composite diaphragm and large driver

The FT13 carries over the FT1’s configuration with 60 mm dynamic drivers, an uncommon size in this category. This larger surface area enables more efficient conversion of electrical signal into sound waves, reducing distortion and speeding up transients. The composite membrane draws its primary material from European birch, sourced from cold climates where trees develop exceptional hardness and robust fibers.

Manufacturing follows a century-old traditional papermaking method: soaking, cooking, and beating wood fibers into a pulp, before adding carbon fiber filaments for rigidity and wool fibers to fine-tune compliance and timbre. The final thickness reaches just 0.1 mm after curing. The diaphragm’s W-shape, inspired by loudspeaker drivers, increases the radiating surface by 25.8% compared to a standard flat profile, with a rigid central dome and a flexible surround that limits energy loss.

The CCAW voice coil (copper-clad aluminum wire) imported from Japan measures 0.035 mm thick and sits on an ultra-light KSV former. Its 25 mm diameter allows for a longer wire length within the magnetic field, thereby generating greater driving force and improved efficiency, especially in the midrange. This design lightens the diaphragm’s moving mass, speeding response and reducing unwanted reverberations.

Internal acoustics and enhanced isolation

The FT13 adopts a closed-back design that, beyond the natural isolation of the wooden shells, integrates multiple passive attenuation components: a chamber to dissipate standing waves, absorbent cotton in the rear cavity, and a U-shaped noise-reduction tube. According to the manufacturer’s measurements, the system can reduce ambient noise by up to 26 dB, effectively filtering conversations and background noise.

The U-shaped damping tube leverages the air inside the headphone to fine-tune acoustic tuning. Its length and angle have been calculated to lower the cavity’s resonance frequency, enabling deeper, better-controlled bass. This closed design also prevents sound leakage outward, making the headphone suitable for quiet environments such as offices, libraries, or dorm rooms.

Rethought comfort and ergonomics

The FT13’s headband represents a notable evolution compared to the FT1. The outer U-frame is now crafted from a magnesium alloy, a material that is both lightweight and robust, harmoniously integrated into the design. Ball-bearing sliders, borrowed from high-end headphones, provide smooth adjustment with precise tactile feedback. The pivots and joints have been reinforced for greater durability.

The part in contact with the head is lined with genuine lambskin leather, more breathable and durable than the synthetic leather typically used. This choice improves comfort during long listening sessions. The three-axis swiveling system allows the headphone to adapt to different head shapes, ensuring a personalized fit without excessive pressure points (4.2 N ± 0.3 N).

Two pairs of earpads are included. The lambskin leather pads prioritize clarity and precision while offering thermal comfort. The suede pads enhance bass and offer a soft, breathable texture. These two options let you subtly tailor the sound signature to your preferences.

Comprehensive cabling and connectivity

The detachable 1.5 m cable features an eight-strand construction totaling 1,000 conductors: 500 Furukawa single-crystal copper wires for mids and lows, and 500 silver-plated OFC copper wires for high frequencies and soundstage openness. The headphone-side connectors use dual 3.5 mm TS jacks, making cable replacement easy.

FiiO supplies interchangeable plugs to suit various sources: a standard 3.5 mm jack and a balanced 4.4 mm jack that screw directly onto the cable. Two adapters complete the package: a 3.5-to-6.35 mm converter and a 4.4-to-XLR-4 adapter. This versatility allows the FT13 to connect to headphone amps, audiophile players, network streamers, or smartphones without needing extra cables.

Easy to drive and wide response

With a 32 Ω impedance and sensitivity of 98 dB/mW at 1 kHz (113 dB/Vrms at 1 kHz), the FT13 does not require powerful amplification. Most consumer devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) can drive it properly. Its frequency response extends from 7 Hz to 40 kHz, comfortably covering the audible spectrum and beyond, earning it Hi-Res Audio certification.

To accompany the headphone, FiiO includes a Yaoli linen pouch, a cleaning cloth, a quick start guide, and a hard carrying case to protect it on the go. The set weighs 356 g without the cable, a contained weight for a closed-back over-ear headphone of this size.
