The SuperTrax is a super tweeter developed by Fyne Audio, designed to extend an audio system’s frequency response beyond 20 kHz. It can be integrated into various high-fidelity systems and uses a carbon dome paired with a high-frequency crossover that allows fine-tuning of the treble while maintaining a coherent soundstage.

Dome and magnetic system technology

At the heart of the SuperTrax is a 25 mm dome made from TPCD (Thin Polymer Carbon Dome), a composition that combines lightness and rigidity. This thin-layer material allows the dome to vibrate with precision and responsiveness—crucial characteristics for reproducing extreme frequencies without distortion. The magnetic system uses high-performance neodymium, delivering strong motor force while keeping dimensions compact.

This type of construction allows the SuperTrax to handle very small excursion amplitudes in the ultrasonic range, a domain where phase errors and propagation delays become audible and can compromise the system’s overall tonal accuracy.

Frequency response and signal processing

The SuperTrax extends acoustic response from 16 kHz to 60 kHz, pushing significantly beyond the 20 kHz generally considered the upper limit of human hearing. This extension offers several indirect benefits: it reduces the load on the main tweeters by handing off the highest frequencies, and it enhances the overall sense of clarity and openness.

The 3rd-order high-pass filter at 16 kHz benefits from cryogenic treatment of the components. This approach stabilizes dielectric properties and improves signal transparency by reducing atomic-scale micro-movements responsible for subtle sonic degradation. Precise time alignment ensures that the energy reflected by the dome retains the same harmonic structure as the direct signal, avoiding destructive phase interference.

Compatibility and adjustments

The nominal impedance of 8 Ohms and sensitivity compatible with speakers up to 98 dB make the SuperTrax universally compatible with existing hi-fi systems. The recommended amplifier power is capped at 400 W RMS, which suits the majority of quality audio amplifiers.

A level adjustment of ±3 dB relative to the nominal setting allows tailored integration according to the room’s acoustic characteristics and user preferences, avoiding excess or deficiency in the ultrasonic region.
