Rega Nd9

Unexpected success of the Nd range launched in 2024, the Nd7 model quickly surpassed its smaller siblings in sales volume. This strong customer approval led Rega to explore an avenue it had not initially considered: transferring the boron cantilever technology from its Aphelion 2 (reference MC cartridge) to a moving magnet cartridge. The Nd9 is the result of this approach, hand-assembled in the Essex workshops.

A cantilever borrowed from high‑end MC cartridges

Switching from aluminum to boron changes everything. More rigid and lighter, this material reduces cantilever flex when tracking record grooves. Every micro-variation in the vinyl is transmitted with less mechanical deformation, resulting in more precise transient reading and better reproduction of note decays.

Connecting a neodymium magnet to a boron tube turned out to be more complex than expected. The two materials do not bond easily. Rega called on a specialist watchmaker to manufacture an ultra-thin double-diameter connecting tube capable of assembling these elements without compromising the rigidity of the whole. This solution makes the Nd9 the only MM cartridge on the market to combine a boron cantilever with an N55 neodymium magnet.

The Fine Line stylus: digging deeper into the groove

The nude Fine Line diamond uses the same profile as on the Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2. Its contact radii of 3 µm (upper face) and 30 µm (vertical) allow it to reach deeper into the groove than standard elliptical profiles. This sharp geometry improves reading of the high frequencies engraved near the bottom of the groove, where wider profiles lose definition.

The usual trade‑off with such a stylus is its sensitivity to alignment. Rega’s three‑point mounting eliminates this issue: the tracking angle is factory‑preset, and installation comes down to tightening three bolts then adjusting tracking force to 1.75 g.

A reworked generator for high frequencies

The Nd9’s miniaturized coils are internally wound with 38 µm wire in 1,275 turns in a parallel configuration. This architecture reduces the generator’s inductance and impedance, which extends high‑frequency bandwidth without the usual MM cartridge limitations. The N55 magnet, the most powerful commercially available, compensates for the reduced number of turns to maintain an output level of 5 to 6 mV, compatible with any standard MM phono preamp.

The perfectly symmetrical generator geometry improves channel balance, while the optimized air gap reduces crosstalk and widens the stereo image compared with the Nd7.

A lightweight body to free up the tonearm

The PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) housing reinforced with glass fibers offers high rigidity with low mass. This choice reduces the load on the tonearm bearings and promotes freedom of movement, a critical parameter for faithful tracking of modulations. The amber‑tinted window allows you to visually check correct stylus positioning.

The pivot pad system, common to all Rega cartridges, removes any mechanical joint between the stylus assembly and the main body. This design improves tracking stability and facilitates the rebuild program: in case of wear or damage, Rega replaces the cantilever, stylus, and pivot pad, then tests the assembly as if it were a new cartridge.

Mounting on a turntable: Planar 8 or retrofit

The Nd9 can be fitted to any Rega arm thanks to its three‑point mounting. A factory‑fitted option on the Planar 8 is available at a preferential price, a coherent solution to fully exploit this cartridge’s potential. On less ambitious turntables, the quality of the Nd9 may run into the limits of the rest of the system: Rega recommends mounting it from the Planar 3 upwards, but the most logical match remains the Planar 6, 8, or 10.
