Overview

With the Red series, Triangle is expanding its hi-fi cable catalogue by offering a more advanced amplifier‑to‑speaker connection than the Opéra range. Sold in pairs in lengths of 3 or 5 metres, this ready‑to‑use cable relies on a high‑purity OFC copper conductor, multilayer insulation and gold‑plated banana terminations. All of this is housed in a braided fabric sleeve that gives it both a refined look and welcome flexibility in everyday use.

Refined copper for stable transmission

The Red is based on OFC (Oxygen Free Copper) conductors with a stated purity of 99.99%. This level of refinement limits impurities that could create micro‑resistances as the signal passes through. The total cross‑section of 2 x 2.5 mm², equivalent to American 13 AWG gauge, allows it to power both bookshelf and floorstanding speakers without significant losses over typical lengths.

The internal structure uses a braid of seven bundles of 32 strands each. This multi‑strand geometry enhances the cable’s flexibility while distributing current across the full cross‑section. A directional marking indicates the recommended connection direction from Triangle, a practice some manufacturers advocate to optimise conductivity, even if its effect remains debated among electronics engineers.

Triple‑layer insulation and fabric sleeve

Triangle has stacked several barriers between the conductor and the external environment. A cotton sheet first wraps the copper, followed by an insulating cotton layer and then a flexible PVC jacket. The goal: preserve the conductor’s electrical properties and reduce electromagnetic interference that may be generated by nearby devices (television, router, power supply).

On the outside, a PVC core covered with a fabric braid provides mechanical protection. The fabric sleeve, often reserved for high‑end cables, makes handling easier and limits accidental kinks during installation behind furniture or along skirting boards. It also gives the Red a visual finish consistent with Triangle speakers.

Pre‑fitted BP450 banana plugs

Each end of the cable is equipped with 3.6 mm BP450 banana connectors, a widely used standard in the hi‑fi world. The gold‑plated contacts reduce oxidation and maintain stable conductivity over time. Insertion into screw or spring‑clip binding posts on amplifiers and speakers is tool‑free, which simplifies repeated connections during tests or system rearrangements.

The anodised aluminium end caps, available in black and red, make it easier to identify polarities. A practical detail when quickly wiring a stereo setup or a multichannel home‑cinema system.

Implementation and use cases

The Red is intended for mid‑ to high‑end stereo or multichannel systems. Its 2.5 mm² cross‑section is suitable for lengths of up to 5 metres without noticeable degradation of damping factor, a parameter that affects woofer control in the low‑frequency range. Beyond this distance, a larger cross‑section may be preferable.

The cable’s flexibility makes it easier to route through conduits or behind furniture. However, its overall diameter remains larger than that of an entry‑level cable, so you’ll need to allow for enough space if you want a fully concealed installation. For those who prefer to make their own cables to the desired length, Triangle still offers the Opéra range by the metre and BP450 plugs sold separately.

Positioning within the Triangle range

The Red sits between the more affordable pre‑assembled Opéra cables and the Symphonie series, which uses 99.999% pure OFHC copper with silver‑plated plugs. It shares with the new Black series a design focused on a well‑balanced build‑quality‑to‑price ratio, with the Black standing out through a single available length and a slightly lower price point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between the Red and the pre‑assembled Opéra cable?

The Red features more sophisticated multilayer insulation (cotton, PVC, fabric) and gold‑plated BP450 plugs, whereas the pre‑assembled Opéra uses silver‑plated BP400 plugs and a simpler transparent PVC jacket. The cross‑section remains identical at 2.5 mm², but the Red’s construction is aimed at better protection against interference and enhanced durability.

Does the cable need burn‑in?

Triangle does not specify any particular burn‑in period. Some users report a slight sonic evolution after a few hours of listening, but this phenomenon, which is difficult to measure objectively, remains open to interpretation. The cable can be used normally right from installation.

Are the BP450 plugs compatible with all binding posts?

The 3.6 mm diameter matches the international hi‑fi standard. They fit the vast majority of socket‑type binding posts on modern amplifiers and speakers. Some vintage devices with narrow screw‑type terminals may, however, present insertion difficulties.

Can the Red be used with speakers from other brands?

The cable works with any passive speaker equipped with standard binding posts. Triangle designed it to complement the sonic signature of its own speakers, but its neutral character allows it to integrate seamlessly into mixed‑brand systems.
