Triangle RED - Subwoofer 5m

Overview

With its Black and Red ranges, French manufacturer Triangle is expanding its catalogue beyond loudspeakers. This Y-configured RCA cable connects the subwoofer output of a Hi-Fi amplifier or home cinema amplifier to the inputs of an active subwoofer. The 3-meter length (also available in 5 meters) gives you enough leeway to position the subwoofer freely in the room, without being constrained to keep it close to the source electronics.

Multi-strand OFC copper conductor with very high purity

The conductor uses OFC (Oxygen Free Copper) with a purity level of 99.99%. This type of copper, produced using a process that removes residual oxygen, reduces internal micro-resistances and promotes high conductivity. Low frequencies, which require a higher current transfer than midrange or treble, directly benefit from this low-impedance structure. The cable is made up of multiple strands, a geometry that improves mechanical flexibility while distributing the electrical flow evenly.

Triple-layer insulation and reinforced shielding

The RED Subwoofer cable combines several protective barriers. From the outside inwards: a braided cotton sleeve provides mechanical protection and aesthetics, followed by PVC insulation, an aluminum insulating foil, copper braid shielding, and then a second PVC jacket surrounding the conductor. This triple-layer insulation architecture serves two purposes. First, it blocks electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference, which are particularly problematic over long runs or near digital devices. Second, it damps mechanical vibrations that might otherwise travel along the cable.

Gold-plated connectors and directional arrows

The RCA plugs are gold-plated to protect the contacts from oxidation and ensure stable conductivity over time. Each connector is clearly identified, making it easy to connect to the subwoofer’s inputs. The cable also carries an arrow indicating the recommended signal flow direction, from the amplifier’s subwoofer output to the subwoofer input. This marking helps maintain the electrical consistency of the system and avoids connection errors.

Y configuration: a mono signal distributed to two inputs

The subwoofer or LFE output of an amplifier delivers a mono signal, as low frequencies are generally summed into a single channel. The Y cable takes this signal at the source via a single RCA plug and distributes it to the subwoofer’s two inputs through its two output plugs. The sub then sums these two inputs internally before amplification. This configuration addresses a practical constraint: many active subwoofers feature a pair of left/right RCA inputs (a legacy of older stereo systems without a dedicated sub output) rather than a single LFE input. By feeding both inputs, you avoid leaving one input floating and ensure an optimal signal level. For subs equipped with a single input, one of the two plugs simply remains unused.

Integration in a Triangle or mixed system

Triangle designed this cable to partner with its own active speakers (Borea Connect, AIO Twin, LN01A, LN05A ranges) and its subwoofers (Tales 340, Thetis 300, Thetis 340). Of course, the cable works with any amplifier or subwoofer equipped with standard RCA connectors. Its weight of 190 grams (284 grams for the 5-meter version) and its flexibility make it easy to route behind furniture or along a skirting board without putting strain on the connectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between this cable and a standard RCA audio cable?

A subwoofer cable has to carry low frequencies with higher current and often over longer distances than a standard interconnect. The reinforced shielding and larger conductor cross-section reduce the risk of interference pickup (hum, radio interference), which is more likely to occur over long runs.

Can this cable be used with a subwoofer that only has a single RCA input?

Yes. Just plug one of the two Y connectors into the subwoofer’s single input and leave the other connector unconnected. Signal transmission remains exactly the same.

Why use a Y cable if the signal is mono?

Many subwoofers have two RCA inputs (left/right), a legacy of stereo systems without a dedicated subwoofer output. The Y cable allows you to feed both of these inputs from the amplifier’s mono output, ensuring a proper signal level and avoiding an unused input.

Is this cable suitable for a home cinema setup with an LFE output?

Yes. The LFE output of a home cinema amplifier uses a standard RCA connector and delivers a mono signal dedicated to low frequencies. The RED Subwoofer cable connects directly to it.
