Overview
A discreet 15 cm-wide cabinet, a 130 mm aluminum woofer, a 25 mm aluminum-manganese alloy tweeter. The Plus XL.3 adopts the technical principles that Canton applies across its entire range: light, rigid metal cones, the brand’s own sound tuning, and European manufacturing. It is intended for secondary stereo setups, multichannel home cinema systems, or any space where size matters.
A design made for wall mounting
Canton supplies the Plus XL.3 with a wall-mount bracket, removable feet, and the necessary screws. The bracket allows a rotation of about 90° in each direction from its central position, making it possible to aim the sound at the listening area even when the speaker is placed high up or in a corner. The whole unit weighs 2.1 kg: light enough to be mounted on a standard partition wall, heavy enough to remain stable on a shelf.
The binding posts accept banana plugs, which simplifies wiring in permanent installations. The 4 to 8-ohm impedance ensures compatibility with the vast majority of hi-fi amplifiers and home cinema receivers on the market.
Two drivers, one coherent sound signature
The 130 mm woofer uses an aluminum cone, a recurring choice at Canton for several decades. This material offers good rigidity for a relatively low weight, promoting precise transient reproduction and limiting unwanted resonances. The surround keeps the cone in place while allowing enough excursion to produce bass in such a compact volume.
The 25 mm tweeter uses an aluminum-manganese alloy dome. Canton employs this combination to extend high-frequency response while preserving the mechanical strength of the diaphragm. The crossover frequency is set at 3,000 Hz, a classic value that leaves the woofer in charge of the mids without overtaxing the tweeter.
The bass-reflex design gains a few decibels in the low end compared with a sealed system of the same volume. Canton specifies a frequency response from 40 Hz to 30 kHz, values measured according to the manufacturer’s standards. In practice, deep bass is still limited by the cabinet size: for very bass-heavy content or high listening levels, adding a subwoofer significantly improves performance.
Versatile usage scenarios
The Plus XL.3 works in stereo as a secondary listening system in an office, bedroom, or kitchen. It can serve as a surround or effects speaker in a home cinema system, where its compact size and wall mounting simplify integration. Some users employ it as a rear speaker in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup, combined with Canton floorstanding speakers at the front.
Its 88 dB sensitivity is about average: an amplifier delivering 30 to 50 watts per channel is sufficient for a standard-sized living room. For larger rooms or high-volume listening, a more powerful amplifier will make better use of the speaker’s capabilities.
Position within the Plus and Pro ranges
The Plus series includes three models of increasing size: the MX.3, X.3, and XL.3. All share the same design philosophy and materials, with woofers of 90, 110, and 130 mm respectively. The XL.3 offers the deepest low-frequency extension and the highest power handling.
Canton also offers a Pro series (Pro X.3 and Pro XL.3) with moisture protection, allowing installation in a bathroom, under an awning, or in other exposed environments. The Plus XL.3 does not include this protection: it is suitable for dry indoor spaces. For a covered terrace or poolside area, the Pro XL.3 remains the appropriate choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Plus XL.3 be used as a center speaker in a home cinema system?
No, its vertical orientation and two-way configuration do not meet the requirements of a center channel. Canton offers dedicated center speakers in its various ranges (GLE, Vento, Townus) with a horizontal layout and multiple midrange drivers for better voice dispersion.
Can the Plus XL.3 be combined with speakers from other Canton series?
Yes, as long as you respect the amplifier’s impedance and sensitivity ranges. The aluminum cones and aluminum-manganese tweeter provide tonal consistency with most current Canton ranges.
Does the warranty cover damage related to outdoor use?
No. The Plus XL.3 is not designed to withstand moisture or bad weather. Installing it outdoors without protection voids the warranty and may damage the internal components.
Which Canton amplifier can power the Plus XL.3?
The Smart Amp 5.1 (S2) is a comprehensive option: it can drive up to six wired passive speakers and includes Dolby Atmos decoding. For a simple stereo setup, an integrated amplifier rated at 2 × 50 W is sufficient.
