Overview

Square format, minimal depth, yet a full 2‑way system with a passive radiator. The Atelier InWall 3 takes the design codes of the Atelier series revamped in 2025 and condenses them into the most compact chassis in the catalogue. Canton designed it for rooms where space is limited but sound quality remains a priority: hallways, home offices, bathrooms (with suitable placement), kitchens, or rear effect speakers in a home cinema system.

A compact design that doesn’t sacrifice engineering

The 330 × 330 mm cabinet hides a two‑way bass-reflex architecture. The 128 mm mid/bass driver uses an ATB (Aluminium Titanium Black) cone, the signature alloy of Canton’s new series. This material combines rigidity and lightness, two key qualities for reproducing clear mids and controlled bass despite a small enclosure volume.

A passive radiator of the same diameter supports the main driver. It works like a passive radiator: driven by the internal pressure of the cabinet, it extends low-frequency response without the need for a bass-reflex port. Frequency response goes down to 42 Hz, which is a remarkable extension for such a slim format (75 mm mounting depth excluding grille). Both diaphragms share the Wave surround, Canton’s patented technology that uses a wavy profile to allow longer excursions while maintaining linear movement.

The 25 mm tweeter features an aluminium dome (AB series, Aluminium Black) and a Wave lens. This lens guides the high-frequency output to broaden dispersion and reduce directivity effects. The crossover frequency is set at 3,000 Hz, a choice that relieves the mid/bass driver of frequencies where it would lose precision, while preserving a smooth transition to the tweeter.

In-wall installation: everything you need is in the box

Canton supplies a complete in‑wall mounting kit. Installation is done with clamping tabs that grip the wall from the inside, a standard method for drywall. The speaker fits into a 280 × 280 mm cutout and requires an installation depth corresponding to the chassis thickness (about 75 mm). Masonry walls require a pre‑built back box or niche.

The magnetic fabric grille intentionally protrudes from the chassis. It measures 330 × 330 mm and covers the edges of the speaker as well as the mounting points. Once in place, only this fabric surface remains visible, with no exposed frame or screws. The result is a taut fabric square that blends into the wall, either white or black depending on the chosen finish. The grille is removable for access to settings or for enthusiasts who prefer to see the drivers.

Power and impedance: broad amplifier compatibility

The Atelier InWall 3 handles 60 W nominal power and 120 W musical peak power. The nominal impedance of 4 to 8 ohms allows it to be paired with most hi-fi amplifiers or home cinema amplifiers, including entry-level models. The sensitivity of 88 dB at 2.83 V/1 m means that moderate power is enough to reach comfortable listening levels in a medium-sized room.

Canton recommends the Smart Amp 5.1 amplifier as the natural partner for the Atelier series, but any amp stable at 4 ohms will do. For multiroom installations, multi-zone distribution amplifiers can power several Atelier InWall 3 speakers distributed across different rooms.

Positioning within the Atelier range

The Atelier series comes in two versions: OnWall (surface‑mount on the wall) and InWall (flush‑mount in the wall). The InWall 3 is the most compact in‑wall model. Above it, the InWall 5 offers 174 mm drivers for deeper bass extension, while the InWall 9 and InWall 11 models add extra channels and center or surround configurations. The equivalent surface‑mount model, the OnWall 3, shares the same drivers but in a sealed cabinet that mounts directly to the wall with no cutout.

This hierarchy allows you to combine several Atelier models within one system. The InWall 3 works well as rear surround speakers or as a stereo pair in secondary rooms, while larger models handle the front channels or center channel.

Installation constraints to anticipate

In‑wall mounting comes with a few prerequisites. The wall must offer at least 75 mm of free depth behind the cutout. Timber-frame or drywall partitions work well; load‑bearing concrete or brick walls require more extensive work. Cable routing should be planned before fitting the drywall or via existing conduits.

Although Canton states that the fabric grille is acoustically neutral, it remains a fabric that can collect dust. Regular dusting preserves its appearance and prevents buildup on the drivers. For damp rooms such as bathrooms, Canton recommends placing the speaker away from direct water splashes; the speaker is not certified for prolonged exposure to humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Atelier InWall 3 be used on its own, or is a subwoofer mandatory?

The speaker goes down to 42 Hz, which covers a large part of the bass spectrum for music or dialogue. For home cinema with strong low‑frequency effects (explosions, film scores), a dedicated subwoofer provides extra impact below 40 Hz.

What wall thickness is required for in‑wall installation?

The chassis mounting depth is about 75 mm. A standard drywall partition on a metal frame (total thickness around 70 to 100 mm) is generally suitable. Check for the absence of obstacles (studs, electrical conduits) at the intended location.

Can the InWall 3 be installed in the ceiling?

No, the InWall 3 is designed for in‑wall mounting. Canton offers a separate InCeiling range for ceiling installations, with round chassis tailored to that type of mounting.

Can the tweeter be angled to direct sound toward the listening area?

Unlike some Canton InWall or InCeiling models equipped with pivoting tweeters, the Atelier InWall 3 uses a fixed tweeter. The Wave lens provides wide dispersion that compensates for the lack of manual angling in most setups.
