Overview
Add a vertical dimension to an existing home cinema system without redoing the entire setup: that’s the promise of Dolby Atmos “Enabled” speakers, designed to reflect sound off the ceiling. Canton has been offering its AR 4 module for several years, and the S2 version incorporates the technical developments of the new GLE S2 series launched in 2025. Sealed enclosure, redesigned drivers, and versatility that goes beyond the simple role of a height speaker.
A mid-bass driver with ATB cone
The acoustic core of the AR 4 S2 is based on a 154 mm driver equipped with an aluminum-titanium cone with a black finish, which Canton refers to as ATB (Aluminium Titan Black). This treatment, already used on the German manufacturer’s higher-end series, aims to combine lightness and rigidity. The cone can therefore move quickly without deforming, which promotes a crisper reproduction of transients and better-defined mids.
For Dolby Atmos, this midrange precision is crucial. The sound reflected off the ceiling travels a longer path than direct sound: any inaccuracy or excessive coloration is amplified by this bounce. A driver capable of reproducing clean impulses contributes to a more convincing vertical localization of sound effects.
Aluminum tweeter and extended waveguide
The AR 4 S2 does away with the fabric tweeter of its predecessor in favor of a 25 mm aluminum dome, coupled with a redesigned waveguide. This configuration extends the frequency response up to 40,000 Hz, well beyond the human hearing threshold, but Canton considers that this headroom benefits clarity in the upper part of the audible spectrum.
The waveguide controls treble dispersion to direct acoustic energy more evenly. On a speaker designed to operate tilted or lying flat, this control of directivity really comes into its own: the sound must reach the ceiling at a precise angle for the height effect to work properly.
Sealed enclosure and design choices
Canton has opted for a sealed system rather than bass-reflex (the specifications mention “bass-reflex” but the manufacturer states a “closed” system). The advantage of a sealed volume: a more gradual roll-off in the bass and better control of low frequencies, even if extension is limited to 50 Hz. For an Atmos module, this limit is not an issue since height effects rarely call on deep bass.
The dimensions of 17 × 14.5 × 26 cm (width × height × depth in horizontal position) have been calculated to match the GLE range’s floorstanding and bookshelf speakers, but also other series. The weight of 3.6 kg remains moderate, making it easy to position on top of an existing speaker without risk of imbalance.
Installation on speaker or wall
The primary function of the AR 4 S2 is to sit on top of a front or surround speaker. The manufacturer recommends pairing it with the GLE 90 S2, GLE 70 S2, or GLE 30 S2 models, but compatibility goes beyond this single series. The shape and dimensions allow integration with most speakers whose top surface is at least 17 cm wide.
A wall mount is integrated into the enclosure, with no need to buy additional accessories. This option opens up other uses: the AR 4 S2 can be used as a rear effects speaker, a stereo satellite in a secondary room, or even as a ceiling speaker aimed at the listening area. Its 89.5 dB sensitivity and 4–8 ohm compatible impedance make it easy to integrate with most home theater amplifiers on the market.
Power handling and real-world use
With 60 W nominal power and 100 W musical peak, the AR 4 S2 can handle the dynamic passages of Dolby Atmos soundtracks without difficulty, provided the amplifier is properly calibrated. The 3,200 Hz crossover frequency indicates that the internal filter splits the signal between the mid-bass driver and the tweeter around this region, leaving reproduction of higher frequencies to the aluminum dome.
In an Atmos configuration, most home cinema amps let you define the type of height speaker and adjust the level. It is recommended to run automatic calibration (Audyssey, YPAO, Dirac or equivalent) to optimize integration with the main speakers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the AR 4 S2 function on its own as a stereo speaker?
Yes, thanks to its built-in wall mount and complete 2-way design. It can be used as a satellite speaker in a small stereo or multiroom system, although its frequency response (from 50 Hz) will require the addition of a subwoofer for full-range music listening.
What’s the difference compared with the first-generation AR 4?
The mid-bass driver now uses an ATB cone with black coating, and the fabric tweeter has been replaced with an aluminum dome with waveguide. The frequency response now extends up to 40 kHz versus 30 kHz on the previous model.
Do I need a specific Atmos amplifier?
Any home cinema amplifier with outputs for height speakers (“Height” or “Top”) is suitable. Dolby Atmos-compatible models include this feature. A 5.1 amp without these outputs will not be able to use the Atmos function.
How many AR 4 S2 modules are needed for an Atmos system?
One pair is enough for a 5.1.2 configuration (two front height speakers). For a 5.1.4 setup, you’ll need two pairs: one on the front speakers, one on the rear surrounds.
Does the fabric grille affect the sound?
Canton states that the grille is acoustically neutral. In practice, removing it may slightly open up the treble, but the difference remains subtle. The choice mainly comes down to aesthetic preference.
Is the AR 4 S2 suitable for speakers from other brands?
Yes, provided the top of the speaker is sufficiently wide (at least 17 cm) and flat. The module’s natural tilt allows it to work properly even on speakers whose profile differs slightly from Canton GLE models.
