Overview
The GLE series has long been the most popular line from German manufacturer Canton. With the S2 generation, launched in summer 2025, the drivers have been completely redesigned using technologies from the higher-end Vento and Reference ranges. The GLE 20 S2, the smallest model in the series, incorporates these improvements in a 30 cm tall bookshelf format. It can be used on its own in a stereo setup or integrated into a multichannel home theater system.
Drivers derived from higher-end ranges
The heart of the GLE 20 S2 lies in its drivers, developed specifically for this generation. The 154 mm woofer/midrange uses an ATB (Aluminium Titan Black) cone, an aluminum-titanium alloy treated with a chemical process that increases surface area and rigidity while keeping weight to a minimum. This type of cone was previously reserved for Canton’s more expensive series.
The 25 mm tweeter also features a new design. Whereas the previous generation used a flat aluminum-manganese dome, the S2 switches to a high-profile dome with an Aluminium Black diaphragm. The oscillating system, derived from the Vento and Reference series, pushes the diaphragm’s resonance point beyond 30 kHz. In practice, this reduces distortion in the audible range and allows extension up to 40,000 Hz.
An integrated waveguide on the tweeter broadens sound dispersion. The stereo image remains coherent even when you move off the listening axis, a valuable advantage when the speaker is used as a surround channel in a multichannel system.
A discreet format for varied uses
With its 17 cm width, 29.5 cm height, and 26 cm depth, the GLE 20 S2 fits easily on a desk, in a bookcase, or on a TV stand. The rear bass-reflex port, however, requires a few centimeters of clearance from the wall so that the bass can breathe properly.
Its sensitivity of 86.5 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and impedance of 4 to 8 ohms make it compatible with most hi-fi amplifiers and AV receivers on the market. With 70 watts nominal power (130 W peak), it can reach high sound levels without excessive compression, even if the compact internal volume naturally limits the very low bass. Canton recommends adding a subwoofer for demanding home theater use.
The dedicated LS 660 stands (sold separately) allow floor installation with the speakers raised to the correct height. The speaker can also be combined with other models in the GLE series to form a 5.1 system or larger: for example, GLE 70 S2 or GLE 90 S2 at the front, a GLE 50 Center S2 in the center, and a pair of GLE 20 S2 as surround speakers.
Build and finish
The cabinet does not use the monobloc construction of the higher series, but build quality remains meticulous. The baffle, separate from the main body, is painted in a matte satin finish (black or white depending on the version chosen). The joints between the different parts are clean and the edges are neatly executed.
Four finishes are available: black, white, macassar (dark wood), and walnut. The latter, introduced with the S2 generation, is only available on certain models in the series, including the GLE 20. The oval magnetic grilles in acoustically neutral fabric attach without visible hardware and match the cabinet’s clean, minimalist design.
The binding posts accept banana plugs, spades, or bare wire. Wiring is single-wire only (a single pair of terminals per speaker).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a powerful amplifier required to drive the GLE 20 S2?
No. The 86.5 dB sensitivity and 4 to 8 ohm impedance allow you to achieve a good sound level with an integrated amplifier delivering 30 to 50 W per channel. A more powerful unit is only useful for large rooms or listening at very high volume.
Can the speaker be used close to a wall?
The rear bass-reflex port benefits from at least 10 to 15 cm of clearance. Placed directly against a wall, the bass may become more prominent but less controlled. An open-backed shelf or an open TV unit works well.
Can the GLE 20 S2 be used without a subwoofer?
Yes, for music listening in a medium-sized room. The stated frequency response goes down to 42 Hz, which covers most of the musical spectrum. For home theater with low-frequency effects or electronic music, a subwoofer will effectively reinforce the low bass.
Which stands are compatible with the GLE 20 S2?
Canton offers the LS 660 stands, specifically designed for the compact models in the GLE series. Any stand with suitable dimensions (a top plate of at least 17 × 26 cm) will also be suitable.
Do the magnetic grilles affect the sound?
According to Canton, the fabric used is acoustically neutral. In practice, the impact is minimal. Removing them exposes the drivers and slightly alters high-frequency dispersion, but the difference remains subtle in listening.
Is the GLE 20 S2 compatible with Canton Smart systems?
Yes. It can be connected to the Smart Amp 5.1 (S2), Canton’s wireless multichannel amplifier, for integration into a multiroom or Dolby Atmos home theater system.
