Overview
The German manufacturer Canton refreshed its GLE series in 2025 with a complete overhaul of the technical equipment. The GLE 30 S2 keeps the format of its predecessor (the GLE 30) but adopts the ATB and AB drivers developed for the higher-end Vento and Reference ranges. It is the largest bookshelf model in the S2 series, with a 174 mm woofer housed in a cabinet only 36 cm high.
Drivers borrowed from higher ranges
The 174 mm mid-bass driver uses an ATB (Aluminium Titanium Black) cone, a black coating process that stiffens the aluminium-titanium without adding weight to the structure. This generous diameter for a compact speaker partly explains the claimed 38 Hz frequency response, an unusual figure for this format.
The 25 mm tweeter (AB, Aluminium Black) works with an integrated waveguide that widens high-frequency dispersion. The crossover frequency is set at 3000 Hz, a fairly low value that reduces the tweeter’s workload in the upper midrange and allows it to operate in its comfort zone.
The triple-fold Wave Surround suspension allows for significant cone excursions. The reinforced polycarbonate basket and magnetic system are taken directly from the specifications of the more expensive series.
Efficiency that makes amplification easier
With a sensitivity of 89 dB (at 2.83 V / 1 m), the GLE 30 S2 does not require an oversized amplifier. It handles 90 W nominal power and 140 W on musical peaks. Impedance varies between 4 and 8 ohms depending on frequency: an amplifier stable at 4 ohms is still preferable if you regularly turn up the volume.
The frequency response extends up to 40,000 Hz in the highs. This extension beyond the audible range does not provide frequencies perceptible to the human ear, but it indicates linear tweeter behavior across its operating range and a design geared towards high-resolution playback.
Positioning and room integration
The dimensions (19 × 36 × 27 cm) and weight of 6.5 kg per speaker allow for several setups. On a shelf, set back a few centimeters from the rear wall to let the bass-reflex port breathe. On a TV stand, paired with a center speaker from the same series. Or on Canton’s dedicated LS 660 stands, sold separately, which place the tweeter at ear height when seated.
The bass-reflex port is rear-firing. Placing the speaker too close to the wall can boost the bass, sometimes excessively in smaller rooms.
Discreet aesthetics and consistent finishes
The cabinet is available in four finishes: white, black, makassar, and walnut. The front panel is finished with satin paint (white for the white version, black for the others). The oval fabric grilles attach magnetically and protect the drivers without significantly altering the sound.
The design follows Canton’s usual style: balanced proportions, slightly rounded grille edges, no frills. The drivers themselves feature a uniform black finish, common to the entire S2 series.

Frequently Asked Questions
What amplifier power should I plan for?
An amplifier delivering 30 to 100 W into 4–8 ohms is sufficient in most cases. The 89 dB sensitivity makes the speaker easy to drive. Above 100 W, make sure the amplifier remains stable at 4 ohms.
Can the GLE 30 S2 be used without a subwoofer?
Yes, if the room does not exceed 20–25 m². The claimed 38 Hz response covers most of the bass spectrum. For home cinema with soundtracks rich in infrabass, a subwoofer is still preferable.
Are the LS 660 stands essential?
No, but they optimize listening by positioning the tweeter at ear height and decoupling the speaker from the furniture. On a sturdy shelf or stable support, the results remain satisfactory.
What is the difference compared with the previous GLE 30?
The GLE 30 S2 adopts ATB and AB drivers (black cone, improved waveguide), whereas the previous version used titanium and aluminium-manganese cones. The chassis and suspension have been taken from the Vento and Reference series.
Can the GLE 30 S2 be combined with speakers from other Canton series?
Technically yes, but you will get better tonal consistency with models from the same S2 generation. Timbre and technologies differ from one series to another.
