Overview
This 30 cm active subwoofer continues the lineage of the Townus series, launched by Canton in 2021 to succeed the Chrono ranges. The German manufacturer, based in the Taunus region near Frankfurt, has designed this subwoofer to perform equally well in stereo and in multichannel home cinema setups, with versatile installation made easier by several room‑adaptation controls.
A dual complementary diaphragm system
The Townus 12 Sub is based on a hybrid design combining a 308 mm front‑firing active driver and a passive radiator of identical dimensions mounted underneath the cabinet (downfire). This configuration blends the advantages of classic bass‑reflex and passive loading. The main woofer directs energy toward the listener for a direct physical impact, while the rigid MDF passive radiator extends the low‑frequency response and boosts the system’s overall efficiency without requiring a bass‑reflex port.
The active diaphragm is made of titanium, a light and rigid material that Canton uses throughout the Townus series. This choice allows for fast transients and good power handling without cone deformation. The surround uses Wave Surround technology, a multi‑pleat surround that allows significantly greater excursion than conventional suspensions while reducing mechanical distortion.
Built‑in amplification and protection
The built‑in amplifier delivers 250 W continuous and can reach 400 W on musical peaks. This power reserve is useful in large rooms or during passages with strong infrasonic content. Canton has integrated its SC (Speaker Control) technology, a protection system that monitors cone excursion and overload signals in real time. The device intervenes before the driver reaches its mechanical limits and reduces low‑level distortion, which explains the smooth low‑end extension observed in measurements: an active subsonic filter protects the driver and the passive radiator from infrasonic frequencies.
Controls designed for seamless integration
The rear panel groups together the usual controls, but Canton has paid particular attention to their ergonomics. The crossover frequency is adjustable from 50 to 200 Hz with clearly readable intermediate markings, making precise tuning easier without having to rely on measurement equipment. Phase is continuously adjustable rather than limited to a simple 0°/180° switch, a real advantage for compensating for time delays related to the subwoofer’s position in the room.
The Room Compensation selector offers three positions (Narrow, Medium, Wide) to adapt bass level to the acoustics and placement. Near a wall or in a corner, the Narrow position reduces modal reinforcement; in free‑field placement, the Wide position compensates for the lack of boundary gain. This feature simplifies integration without the need for an external equalizer.
In terms of connectivity, the Townus 12 Sub accepts both line‑level inputs (RCA for LFE or summed stereo signal) and high‑level inputs from an amplifier’s speaker terminals. This dual option allows it to be paired with a hi‑fi amp that has no dedicated subwoofer output. An RCA output enables daisy‑chaining to a second subwoofer.
Quality construction and finishes
The cubic enclosure measures 36 × 47.5 × 50 cm and weighs 21 kg. Its construction focuses on rigidity: internal bracing and thick panels limit unwanted vibrations. Height‑adjustable feet ensure stability and preserve enough clearance beneath the cabinet for the passive radiator to operate properly.
Three finishes are available: high‑gloss black, satin matte white, and real walnut veneer. The black acoustic cloth grille is magnetically attached, with rounded corners that match the design of the other speakers in the Townus series. This aesthetic consistency makes it easy to build a visually coherent multichannel system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Townus 12 Sub be used with speakers from another brand?
Yes. Its line‑level (RCA) and high‑level inputs make it compatible with most stereo or home cinema systems, regardless of the brand of the main speakers. The crossover and phase controls allow its behavior to be adapted to different tonal balances.
What room size can this subwoofer cover?
Canton recommends it for medium to large rooms. In a 25 to 35 m² living room, it provides solid, comfortable bass. Beyond 40 m² or for very high listening levels, adding a second subwoofer can improve coverage uniformity.
How does SC technology work?
The SC system monitors the driver’s behavior in real time. When the signal is likely to cause excessive excursion or voice‑coil overheating, the circuit instantly reduces the gain. This protection preserves the transducer’s mechanics without any abrupt, audible cut‑off.
