Overview

A fixed projection screen designed to place speakers behind the projection surface. The woven, acoustically transparent SonicWeave 8K fabric lets sound pass through with a stated attenuation of only -0.5 dB. The aluminum frame, less than one centimeter thick, remains discreet on the wall. A setup that reproduces the principle used in professional movie theaters, where the speakers are systematically concealed behind the screen.

Why place your speakers behind the screen

In a conventional home theater setup, the front speakers frame the screen or are positioned below it. This arrangement creates a spatial offset: dialogue and sound effects come from a different point than the visual action. Placing the speakers behind the screen physically aligns the sound source and the image.

The benefit is especially noticeable with dialogue. When a character speaks on the left side of the frame, the sound actually emerges from that area. The center speaker, often the most important in a multichannel setup, can occupy its ideal position: at the geometric center of the screen, at eye level.

This approach also makes it possible to install a larger screen without sacrificing speaker placement. In a room with limited dimensions, where every centimeter counts, that is a practical advantage.

The SonicWeave 8K fabric: weave and sound transparency

Acoustically transparent screens come in two main forms: micro-perforated surfaces (PVC pierced with thousands of holes) and woven fabrics. SonicWeave belongs to this second category.

Weaving offers several advantages over perforation. It eliminates the risk of moiré, those unwanted patterns that appear when the screen structure interferes with the pixel grid of the projector. With 4K and 8K content, where information density is high, the absence of moiré is a decisive criterion.

The -0.5 dB sound attenuation indicated by Élysium Screens is low. By way of comparison, a 1 dB difference is barely perceptible for most listeners. The fabric should therefore allow frequencies to pass through without noticeable coloration, from bass to treble. High-frequency behavior is generally the critical point for acoustic fabrics: treble, being more directional, is more easily absorbed. A low measurement in this range suggests good sound transparency.

The stated 4K and 8K compatibility is based on the fineness of the weave. The tighter the weave, the less visible it is from a normal viewing distance. Élysium Screens specifies that the image remains “ultra-detailed without ripples or defects,” which suggests a weave dense enough not to alter the rendering of high-resolution projections.

An aluminum frame less than one centimeter thick

Frame thickness is a parameter that is often overlooked. Yet it influences both the aesthetics and the integration of the screen into an interior. With a profile of less than one centimeter, the Edge|One is visually closer to a wall-mounted television than to a bulky technical piece of equipment.

The rigid aluminum structure guarantees the flatness of the fabric. A spring tensioning system maintains this flatness over time, preventing the ripples that sometimes appear on lower-quality screens after a few months of use.

The beveled, light-absorbing black edges play a dual role. They improve perceived contrast by creating a clear break between the image and its surroundings. And they limit stray reflections that could affect image clarity under optimal projection conditions.

Installation and setup

Élysium Screens states an assembly time of around 30 minutes, which is consistent with the fixed-frame design equipped with a spring tensioning system. This type of installation generally does not require specialized tools or advanced technical skills.

The wall-mounting system makes it possible to position the screen at the desired height. The illustrated manual provided should guide each stage of assembly and mounting.

One point to note: the recommended flat storage. Woven fabrics can deform if they are stored rolled up for an extended period. Once installed, this is no longer an issue, but it is something to keep in mind during transport or a possible move.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum distance between the fabric and the speakers?

Élysium Screens does not specify an exact distance. In practice, for in-wall speakers, the standard space between the speaker grille and the fabric (a few millimeters to one centimeter) is generally sufficient. For floorstanding speakers, allow at least 10 to 15 cm for airflow and acoustic movement.

Is the fabric compatible with ultra-short-throw projectors?

The provided specifications do not mention any restriction. Woven acoustic fabrics generally work with all types of projectors (long throw, short throw, ultra-short throw). However, check that your projector does not generate visible moiré with this type of surface.

Can the screen be installed on the ceiling rather than on the wall?

The mounting system described is intended for wall installation. Ceiling installation would require suitable mounts not provided. Consult a professional installer if this configuration interests you.

What is the gain of this fabric?

The specifications do not mention a gain value. Woven acoustic fabrics generally have a gain between 0.8 and 1.0, slightly lower than standard PVC screens. This implies slightly lower returned brightness, offset in a dedicated room with light control.
