A redesigned bass-reflex enclosure for low frequencies

The PSM-800-SW features an 8-inch transducer housed in a bass-reflex enclosure with three folded Tractrix ports. This technology, called Tractrix Hyperfold Port, lengthens the port duct through a five-step fold, increasing airflow without enlarging the cabinet. The result is low-frequency extension down to 38 Hz (±4 dB), or even 30 Hz with 10 dB attenuation, while limiting turbulence and air noise often audible on ported subwoofers.

In terms of power, the PSM-800-SW handles 150 W continuous (AES standard) and 600 W peak. Maximum sound pressure reaches 107 dB, with a sensitivity of 88 dB at 1 W/1 m. The nominal impedance remains 8 ohms, with a minimum of 4.2 ohms at 36 Hz: a parameter to consider when choosing the amplifier.

A transformerless architecture for constant-voltage lines

70V or 100V subwoofers traditionally use a transformer to match impedance. This component creates a problem: it limits low-frequency response by introducing a low-frequency cutoff. Klipsch has opted for a transformerless design that bypasses this limitation. The PSM-800-SW offers two power settings (70 W or 35 W) on 70V and 100V lines, as well as a bypass mode for direct 8-ohm operation.

Connection is made via a four-point Euroblock terminal, faster to wire than traditional screw terminals. This connector also makes maintenance work easier on existing installations.

Weather resistance and on-site integration

The high-strength ABS cabinet withstands prolonged exposure to UV and temperature variations. The IPX6 protection rating guarantees resistance to pressurized water spray, covering heavy rain, sea spray, or hose cleaning. The grille is screw-mounted to prevent accidental detachment, a useful detail in public spaces or wind-exposed locations.

The cabinet’s matte finish is paintable, allowing the subwoofer to blend with the architectural environment. Its dimensions (394 × 305 × 236 mm) and weight of 7.15 kg make it manageable by one person during installation. Depth increases to 282 mm with the mounting bracket.

EN54-24 certification and safety applications

EN54-24 certification allows the PSM-800-SW to be used in voice alarm and fire evacuation systems. This European standard requires thermal resistance, intelligibility, and prolonged operation tests under degraded conditions. Buildings open to the public (hotels, shopping centers, train stations, airports) that must comply with these regulatory requirements can integrate this subwoofer into their safety sound system.

This certification complements its musical reinforcement function: the same subwoofer handles low-frequency reproduction during normal operation and remains operational for evacuation announcements in an emergency.

Complementarity with the PSM series

The PSM-800-SW shares the same design and finish as the PSM-450-T, PSM-525-T, PSM-650-T, and PSM-800-T full-range speakers. This visual consistency simplifies integration into projects where several sound points coexist. The subwoofer’s frequency response (38-200 Hz) works alongside that of the series speakers, whose low-end limit generally falls between 52 and 80 Hz depending on the model.

The five-year warranty covers the entire product, a duration consistent with the professional positioning of the series.
