Overview
Hand-assembled at the Canton factory in Weilrod (Taunus, Germany), this 105 cm 3-way floorstanding speaker combines two 19.2 cm woofers, a 17.4 cm aluminum midrange driver, and a 25 mm aluminum-manganese dome tweeter. The whole assembly is based on passive Displacement Control technology, which filters out inaudible subsonic frequencies to relieve the woofer diaphragms of parasitic excursions. The 690 DC extends the Ergo series, Canton’s longest-running range.
A 3-way configuration with isolated midrange
The internal crossover divides the signal into three bands: the tweeter takes over from 3,000 Hz upward, the midrange operates between 250 and 3,000 Hz in a separate chamber inside the cabinet to isolate it from disturbances caused by the woofers, and the two 19.2 cm aluminum drivers handle everything below 250 Hz. A front bass-reflex port extends the response toward the lower end of the spectrum. The speaker is rated for a frequency response of 20 to 40,000 Hz, a sensitivity of 88.3 dB at 2.83 V at one meter, and an impedance between 4 and 8 ohms depending on frequency.
Displacement Control: a high-pass filter for bass
The DC abbreviation attached to the model refers to Displacement Control technology, a passive high-pass filter placed in the woofer circuit. Its slope of about 12 dB per octave cuts out inaudible subsonic frequencies that would otherwise make the diaphragms move with large excursions to produce a signal that is never heard, at the cost of audible distortion in the useful band. The result: Canton preserves diaphragm travel for the frequencies the ear actually perceives, and the bass remains tighter at high listening levels.
Wave surround and aluminum diaphragms
The woofer and midrange drivers use a light, rigid aluminum diaphragm paired with an in-house triple-wave Wave surround. This geometry allows significant excursion and linearizes the behavior of the surround at large amplitudes, where a conventional surround would begin to introduce nonlinearities. The ADT aluminum-manganese dome tweeter shares its diaphragm and voice-coil former in a single piece, a choice that pushes resonances outside the audible frequency range.
24-carat gold-plated bi-wiring terminals
The amplifier terminal allows bi-wiring and bi-amping, with separation between the tweeter/midrange section and the bass section. The screw terminals are 24-carat gold-plated and compatible with banana plugs, spade connectors, or bare wire. For those who do not use bi-wiring, the supplied jumpers provide conventional connection to a single pair of binding posts.
Placement and amplifier choice
The front-mounted bass-reflex port allows the speaker to be positioned closer to the rear wall without causing the bass boost that a rear port would produce. That does not eliminate the need for minimal clearance, especially in a small room where resonance modes remain predominant. On the electronics side, the rated power of 170 W and the sensitivity of 88.3 dB leave a comfortable margin for most mid-range or high-end integrated and home theater amplifiers, provided they remain stable at 4 ohms, as the impedance drops to that level in certain parts of the spectrum.

Frequently Asked Questions
What room size is the Canton Ergo 690 DC suited to?
The enclosure’s internal volume, the diaphragm surface area of the two 19.2 cm woofers, and the rated power handling of 170 W make the 690 DC suitable for living rooms of around 25 to 50 m². In larger spaces, air pressure buildup may start to fall short on the most demanding passages.
Should spikes or pads be provided under the speaker stand?
The speaker comes with its own stands. On parquet or tiled flooring, steel spikes with their protective cups improve stability and coupling to the floor. On thick carpeted flooring, the spikes pass through the carpet and rest on the hard surface underneath, which remains preferable to direct support on the fibers.
Is a subwoofer a worthwhile addition?
In stereo music listening, the two 19.2 cm woofers extend low enough to do without additional support in most setups. For home theater, adding a dedicated subwoofer for the LFE channel remains the standard in order to handle the very low-frequency effects in soundtracks, below the range that the floorstanding speaker covers with its own cabinet.
Can the 690 DC be used as a front speaker in a home theater setup?
Yes. Its extended low-frequency bandwidth, power handling, and bi-wiring connection make it suitable for both a stereo setup and a multichannel system. The rest of the Ergo series allows for a consistent ensemble in the center channel and surrounds.
Are banana plugs compatible as standard?
Yes, the gold-plated terminals accept standard banana plugs, as well as spade connectors and bare wires. The screw-tightening system ensures a stable mechanical contact over time.
What type of amplifier is suitable for this speaker?
The impedance varying between 4 and 8 ohms requires an amplifier stable at 4 ohms. With a sensitivity of 88.3 dB, power between 60 and 200 W per channel covers the majority of situations, including high-volume listening in a large room.
