Overview
A column fourteen centimeters wide that reaches down to 40 Hz: that is Canton’s bet with the Puro series. In the lineage of the CD series, the Puro 90 abandons the classic hi-fi speaker look for a clean cylindrical shape, available in five shades, that embraces its status as a decorative object as much as its acoustic function. It remains to be seen how five drivers fit into such a narrow cabinet.
A column silhouette reduced to the essentials
The Puro 90 takes the form of a slim cylindrical column measuring 105 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Here, Canton returns to the aluminum column, reduced to a monochrome silhouette where the drivers do not dictate the design. At the base, a die-cast aluminum stand gives it its footing: at 9.3 kg on the scale, the whole remains stable without drawing too much attention. Sharp edges and the absence of superfluous detail place the Puro 90 as much on the furniture side as on the audio equipment side.
Five shades to match the decor
The choice of finishes supports this decorative approach. The column is available in matte black and matte white, two classics, joined by warmer colors: sand, rose, and a walnut veneer. The latter recalls the traditional wood look of hi-fi, while rose and sand target contemporary interiors. Depending on the chosen shade, the Puro 90 either blends in discreetly or becomes a deliberately colorful accent in the room.
Five drivers in a 2.5-way configuration
Behind the uniform surface, the Puro 90 lines up five drivers on a vertical axis. At the center, a 25 mm aluminum dome tweeter handles the highs and extends up to 30 kHz. On either side, four 110 mm drivers with aluminum diaphragms divide the bass and midrange. Below 400 Hz, all four work together to form the bass. Between 400 and 3,300 Hz, only the two upper diaphragms continue and handle the midrange, before the tweeter takes over. This distribution defines the 2.5-way principle, halfway between a two-way and a three-way design. Electrically, the column displays a nominal power of 90 W, handles up to 150 W of music power, presents an impedance between 4 and 8 ohms, and a sensitivity of 87.5 dB measured at 2.83 V at one meter.
Controlled bass despite a narrow cabinet
Reaching 40 Hz in a cabinet 14 cm wide requires a few design choices. The Puro 90 relies on a front-facing bass-reflex port, positioned at the bottom of the cabinet. This front placement allows positioning close to the wall without the bass becoming muddy, whereas a rear port often requires pulling the speaker away from the wall. The low internal volume remains a physical constraint: one should not expect bass from such a slim column to match that of a large cabinet, but the port tuning and the four 110 mm diaphragms provide a credible foundation for music as well as movie soundtracks.
In stereo as well as in a home theater system
The Puro 90 works as a stereo pair, connected to an amplifier or receiver through its binding post terminal, whose finish is designed for a reliable connection and low signal loss. Magnetic shielding allows it to be placed near a television without interference, which helps in a TV cabinet or on either side of a screen. In home theater, it serves as a front speaker and combines with the compact Puro 30 from the same series, for example as surrounds. Count on two columns for a stereo installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What distinguishes the Puro 90 from the Puro 30?
The Puro 30 is a compact two-way speaker, with a single 110 mm driver and a 25 mm tweeter, designed for a shelf, a desk, or a surround role. The Puro 90 is the floorstanding speaker in the series, with its five drivers in a 2.5-way configuration and bass that extends lower.
What amplifier power does the Puro 90 require?
With a sensitivity of 87.5 dB and an impedance of 4 to 8 ohms, the Puro 90 remains easy to drive. An amplifier delivering 30 to 120 W per channel over this impedance range drives it effortlessly in a living room. The 90 and 150 W figures correspond to what the floorstanding speaker can handle, not to the power the amplifier must supply.
Can the Puro 90 be mounted on the wall?
No. It is a floor-standing speaker, stabilized by its die-cast aluminum base, with no provision for wall mounting. The possibility of wall mounting concerns the Puro 30, the compact model in the series.
How do I connect the Puro 90 to an amplifier?
The terminal accepts the main types of connection: bare wire, banana plugs, or spade connectors. Simply observe the polarity, red to red and black to black, between the amplifier and each speaker.
Should you still leave a little space behind the speaker?
Its front-facing port allows placement close to a wall, which is not the case with all floorstanding speakers. A few centimeters of clearance remain helpful: they help open up the soundstage and widen the stereo image, without being a requirement for achieving bass.
