Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sonic difference between the E1 and the E1.2?

The mechanical changes (heavier aluminum platter, damped counterweight, Pick it MM E cartridge with neodymium magnet) alter the rotational inertia and groove tracking. In listening, the E1.2 gains a stronger bass foundation and more stable stereo imaging, whereas the original E1 remained lighter in the low end.

Is the tonearm already adjusted when it comes out of the box?

Geometry, azimuth, and anti-skating are factory preset, and the cartridge is already mounted. All that remains is to balance the tonearm using the counterweight, then set the tracking force to the value indicated for the Pick it MM E before first use. The manual details the procedure.

Can the Pick it MM E cartridge be replaced later?

Yes. The cartridge is mounted on the headshell via the standard half-inch hi-fi mount. Upgrading to a higher-end MM cartridge, or to a cartridge with an elliptical stylus, is possible without modifying the tonearm. The tracking force and antiskating settings will need to be adjusted according to the specifications of the new cartridge.

Do you need a separate phono preamplifier?

Yes. The E1.2 does not have an internal phono preamplifier, unlike the first-generation E1 Phono version. It therefore requires an MM phono input on the integrated amplifier or an external phono preamplifier placed between the turntable and a line input.

What maintenance does the drive belt require?

The belt slowly loosens over time and with use. Replacing it every few years helps restore the nominal speed and limit wow. Pro-Ject sells compatible replacement belts.

Can this turntable play 78 rpm records?

No. Only 33⅓ and 45 rpm speeds are supported. 78 rpm records require a compatible turntable and a cartridge suited to the wider groove of this format.

Should the cover remain in place during playback?

Pro-Ject recommends opening the dust cover during playback to prevent the lid from resonating with the sound emitted by the speakers. For listening at moderate volume in a quiet room, keeping it in place remains possible.

Is the phono cable replaceable?

The phono cable is captive, meaning it is fixed directly to the base of the tonearm and not connected via RCA jacks at the chassis output. Its replacement is therefore not intended without technical intervention on the turntable.
