A closed back that isolates the game

The closed-back design shields the ear from outside noise and keeps sound inside the ear cups. In a shared room, on a local network, or in the middle of a multiplayer game, this isolation helps track positional cues and keeps the voice channel clear without turning up the volume. The 40 mm dynamic drivers cover the 20 to 20,000 Hz range. The tuning focuses on sound localization and natural voice reproduction, in keeping with the brand’s studio approach, where clarity takes precedence over effect. The trade-off: a narrower soundstage than an open-back model, an intentional compromise for greater isolation.

Velvet and a repairable design

Memory foam velvet ear pads have been a brand signature for decades. They fit without pressure and let the ears breathe during long sessions, where faux leather heats up quickly. At 275 grams and with a padded headband, the headset is easy to forget you’re wearing. Beyerdynamic has fitted metal hinges and made the ear cups fold flat for transport. The ear pads can be removed and replaced, as can the battery and other wear parts: enough to extend the headset’s lifespan well beyond the first games, for an object often subjected to daily wear and tear.

Dongle, Bluetooth, or cable

Three connection options coexist. The 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle provides a low-latency link, under 30 ms, the useful margin for keeping picture and sound synchronized in fast-paced gaming. Bluetooth 6.0 takes over for phones and compatible devices, with a range of around fifteen meters. An analog cable remains available when wireless is not suitable. Depending on the device, the headset works with a PC, a PlayStation, a Nintendo Switch, or a smartphone; Xbox works only via cable, due to the lack of a compatible wireless connection on the console side. A USB-A adapter accompanies the USB-C dongle for older ports.

The detachable META VOICE microphone

The META VOICE microphone detaches in a single motion when gaming gives way to music or a commute. It is a condenser microphone, with a 9.9 mm capsule, a 20 to 24,000 Hz response, and -26 dBV sensitivity at 1 kHz, tuned to deliver clear, intelligible voice communication for team chat. Its flexible boom can be positioned in front of the mouth and removed as soon as it is no longer needed, returning the headset to an ordinary silhouette for listening to music outdoors.

Long battery life and settings in the app

More than 80 hours of battery life pushes recharging far down the calendar—several weeks at a few hours of gaming per day. The beyerdynamic app, on iOS and Android, adjusts equalization, installs headset updates, and provides access to settings such as automatic shutdown, voice controls, and status messages. Nothing essential to start gaming, but a way to fine-tune the sound to your taste and keep the firmware up to date.

Its place in the MMX range

The MMX 100 wireless opens the brand’s premium gaming range and sticks to the essentials. Above it, the MMX 150 wireless adds voice monitoring in the headset (sidetone) and an ambient listening mode, for eight additional grams. Alongside it, the MMX 130 wireless uses an open back and a titanium-coated 40 mm driver: a wider, airier soundstage at the expense of isolation, best suited to quiet rooms. The choice comes down to the back of the ear cups: closed for isolation, open for breathing room.
