Sony ULT Tower 7

Place a nearly 23-kilo tower speaker in the middle of a garden, connect a DJ turntable, start karaoke and light up the evening to the beat of the music: that is the plan for this battery-powered party speaker from Sony. It sits within a new family of three ULT Tower models, between the larger mains-powered sibling and a more compact version, with an emphasis on bass and mobility.

Seven drivers around a 28 cm woofer

Seven speakers share the workload. At the center, a 280-millimeter circular woofer handles the bass, supported by two 120-millimeter midrange drivers and four 50-millimeter tweeters, two facing forward and two facing backward. This rear pair powers 360° Party Sound: sound does not remain concentrated in front of the speaker but spreads all around it, useful when guests move around the tower rather than sitting in front of it.

The woofer breathes through a bass-reflex port that Sony calls ULT Duct, sized to allow high airflow and keep the bass clean as the volume rises. Amplification reaches 420 watts of maximum output power.

Bass controlled with the ULT button

The ULT button, recognizable on the front panel, switches between two bass boosts. ULT1 goes lower in the low frequencies; ULT2 favors sound pressure and more assertive bass. Next to it, Flat mode restores a neutral balance and Live mode opens up the soundstage to recreate a concert atmosphere. The latter is activated from the Sony Sound Connect app or can be reassigned to the ULT button according to your preferences.

For finer adjustment, the app provides a ten-band equalizer. DSEE technology restores some of the treble lost through file compression and streaming. Sound field optimization completes the package: the speaker analyzes its placement and ambient noise level, then adjusts the bass and overall balance. Calibration takes orientation into account, whether the tower is standing vertically or laid horizontally.

Wheels, battery and splash resistance

Two strengths distinguish the 7 from the mains-powered model in the range: an integrated battery and wheels. The former provides up to 30 hours of listening, measured with ULT mode active, moderate volume and lighting switched off; turning up the sound and switching on the lights shortens that duration accordingly. The latter, combined with the handles, allow the unit’s 22.8 kilos to be pulled along without having to carry it.

IPX4 certification covers water splashes when the speaker is vertical and the connection cover is closed, enough to take it onto a terrace or near a pool without worrying about splashes. It does not extend to immersion or heavy rain. A USB port can also be used to recharge a smartphone from the battery, with the speaker serving as an emergency power source. The enclosure uses around 20% recycled plastic.

DJ, microphone and speaker chaining inputs

Wired connectivity is designed for both DJ turntables and the stage. It includes an RCA input, an XLR input and output for connecting a mixing desk or sending the signal to another speaker, a 6.35-millimeter jack microphone input for karaoke, plus USB-A and USB-C ports. Wirelessly, Bluetooth 5.3 supports SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs, manages multipoint connection between two devices and Fast Pair quick pairing.

Two compatible speakers can be paired in stereo to separate the left and right channels. Party Chain goes further by linking several Sony speakers, now based on Auracast, which synchronizes both music and lighting effects.

Ambient lighting and app control

The integrated lighting offers three atmospheres: Beat matches dynamic effects to the rhythm, Wave provides more subdued lighting, and Mellow reduces movement for a calm atmosphere. Everything is adjusted from the Sony Sound Connect app, which also centralizes sound modes, the equalizer and pairing. The light strip surrounding the front grille and the tower silhouette give the unit a confident presence, whether standing or lying down.
