Kenwood M-9100S
Kenwood M-9100S, a connected hi-fi micro system
Fitting a CD player, digital radio and streaming into a single system, without stacking separate components: that is what this micro system from Kenwood offers. Two bass-reflex speakers, a compact central unit, a colour screen and 2 x 60 watts of amplification are all it takes to play your discs and online playlists, while receiving both FM and DAB+ digital radio.
Two bass-reflex speakers for bass
Each speaker combines two drivers: one for bass and midrange, and a second dedicated to treble. The cabinet is bass-reflex, meaning it features a port that reinforces bass by taking advantage of the air moved behind the driver. Each speaker measures 180 x 270 x 258 mm and weighs 3.1 kg, dimensions comparable to a bookshelf speaker.
The amplification is rated at 2 x 60 watts RMS, a value corresponding to continuously delivered power, more meaningful than the peak power figures often highlighted. The central unit, which houses the electronics and sources, measures 230 x 140 x 230 mm and weighs 1.8 kg. Two separate controls, one for bass and the other for treble, allow the tone to be adjusted according to the room and recordings.
Discs, USB drives and line input
Physical media have not disappeared from this system. A CD player is located on the front panel, accompanied by a USB port for connecting a drive and playing the files stored on it. Shuffle and repeat playback are available, both for discs and USB drives.
A rear line input accommodates an analogue source: an external player, or a turntable equipped with its own phono preamplifier. Enough to keep your listening habits without giving up online sources.
DAB+ radio and online music
On the radio side, three modes coexist, brought together by Kenwood under its SmartRadio name. Classic FM comes with RDS, which displays the station name and the information it broadcasts. DAB+ provides terrestrial digital radio: more stable reception and more stations than FM. Internet radio and podcasts, meanwhile, use Wi-Fi and provide access to thousands of streams from around the world.
For music streaming, Bluetooth 5.2 sends sound from a smartphone, tablet or computer. Spotify subscribers also benefit from Spotify Connect: playback is controlled from the Spotify app, but the system retrieves the stream directly over the network. The phone then serves as a simple remote control and can go into standby without interrupting the music.
Screen, remote control and app
A 2.4-inch (6.1 cm) colour TFT screen displays the current source, station names and playback information. The supplied infrared remote control covers everyday functions, while the OKTIV app takes over from a smartphone to browse between sources and control playback over the network.
The system also serves as an alarm clock radio, with a dual alarm allowing two separate times, and a sleep timer that stops playback after a programmed delay. Convenient for falling asleep to music.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a turntable be connected to the M-9100S?
Yes, via the rear line input, provided that the turntable has a built-in phono preamplifier or that an external preamp is placed between the two. The line input expects a signal already amplified to line level: the very low signal coming directly from a cartridge would remain virtually inaudible.
Which audio files do the CD player and USB port support?
The CD player plays commercially available audio CDs, recordable CDs (CD-R and CD-RW), and discs containing MP3 files. The USB port supports MP3 files stored on a USB drive.
Do Internet radio and podcasts require a subscription?
No. Internet radio and podcasts are available free of charge once the streamer is connected to Wi-Fi. However, an account is still required for Spotify Connect, which relies on the Spotify service.
Which sources work without a Wi-Fi connection?
The CD player, USB port, FM, DAB+, Bluetooth and line input do not require any network. Only Internet radio, podcasts and Spotify Connect need Wi-Fi.
What is the difference between Bluetooth and Spotify Connect?
With Bluetooth, the phone decodes the music and sends it to the system; it must remain within range and its battery life is used. With Spotify Connect, the system retrieves the stream directly from the network: the phone simply tells it what to play, the connection is more stable, and you can move away or lock the screen without interrupting playback.
Can a TV be connected to the M-9100S?
This is possible via the line input, provided that the television has an analog audio output (headphone jack or RCA output). A model limited to an optical digital output would require an optical-to-analog converter inserted into the connection.
